SYNOPSIS
In 1600, a young man in Miyamoto village, Shin'men Takezo (Kimura Takuya) decided to participate in the Battle of Sekigahara wishing for a better life and status. Together with his childhood friend, Hon'iden Matahachi they joined the West troops, but among 180,000 soldiers, they lost track of who's enemy and who's ally. In the midst of the chaos, Takezo was captivated by a man from the East troops. He swung his sword beautifully like a flowing water. He is the young Sasaki Kojiro, his future, lifelong rival...
The West troops lost but Takezo survived the Sekigahara battle. Then, Takezo sneak past a barrier and return to his hometown, the Miyamoto village to inform Matahachi's mother, Osugi, that her son survived. Matahachi is engaged to Otsu, but he was mesmerized by a woman on the way named Oko and decided to live together with her and her daughter, Akemi.
When a few men chased after Takezo and cornered him, he pulled a woman, who was just passing by, close to him and use her as a shield. Apparently she's Otsu, Matahachi's fiancee. In the end, Takezo got captured by priest Takuan, the man who's taking care of Otsu.
Takuan hung Takezo from a tree by force. It wasn't a punishment for a ruffian but it was Takuan's way in teaching him to think over his reckless way of life. But the hot-blooded Takezo cannot comprehend such way of teaching.
"If you let me come with you, I'll rescue you!". Otsu released Takezo from the tree. As Matahachi ran away with another woman, Otsu doesn't have a place anymore in this village. They escaped into the hills and fall in love with each other. However, Otsu fell into a river and she caught a fever. Takezo decided to ask Takuan's help to save her life. And so, he is confined inside the Himeji castle.
Four years later, Takezo was released. The castle lord, Ikeda Terumasa and priest Takuan gave him a new name "Miyamoto Musashi" and he decided to embark on a sword training journey. His goal is to make a name for himself through the path of sword and become a feudal lord.
The first step Musashi took was to knock on the gate of the well-known Yoshioka Dojo. However, the 2nd generation of the Yoshioka style master, Seijuro was not there. His dojo disciples were enraged to see a stranger forcing his way in and fight him. Though Musashi's swordskill was still unrefined, he beat the Yoshioka disciples easily.
At that time, Seijuro was visiting the red light district in Gion. Matahachi and Oko were there, as well. Matahachi's life has hit rock bottom as he live in the corner of Kyoto relying on Oko's earnings...
Then, it was decided that Musashi will have a match with Seijuro in another month. To polish his spearmanship skill, Musashi visited Hozoin, a subtemple of Kofukuji Temple in Nara, and challenged the best disciple there, Agon...
Kimura Takuya's Comment
This "Miyamoto Musashi" drama will include human drama elements and at the same time, Musashi's emotions as well. Personally, I have experience with sword since childhood so I'm always aware of this figure, Miyamoto Musashi. I'm looking forward to reveal his mystery one by one as I'm playing the role.
There must be a reason for making "Miyamoto Musashi" in this era. Musashi is pure and he actually scared of things, that's exactly why he can only express the value of his existence with the path of sword.
Miyamoto Musashi had been acted by many senior actors so far. But I'd like to portray my own "Musashi" without any hesitation.
Leaving Tokyo and shooting in Kyoto made me able to immerse into the role. The cast and crews are working so hard, so I'll give my all to the end too!
Yokochi Ikuei (General Producer)'s Comment
The strongest man in Japan... Miyamoto Musashi has so many mystery. He didn't leave much trace in the historical books and yet he left his charm in many kinds of shape including guesses. Japan is currently recovering and that's why I think "Miyamoto Musashi" should be made into a drama. I thought no one else can play Miyamoto Musashi's mysterious charm as good as Kimura Takuya-san, so we kept asking him to accept this role and it finally came true.
It has been 19 years since Kimura-san starred a TV Asahi drama. We're so nervous. The scale fits as the climax of TV Asahi's 55th anniversary celebration. The cast who will play Kojiro, Otsu, Takuan, Matahachi, Osugi and others, are great actors whom everyone would like to see nowadays.
Big action scenes such as the Ganryujima showdown, the scene where he slaughtered 70 men near the Ichijoji Temple at the base of the Sagarimatsu tree and others will be directed by the world-wide known action director, Tanigaki Kenji-san. He will make them newly fresh action-packed scenes.
Musashi and Otsu's tragic love story will also be properly written.
Behind his strength, there's his frustration and weakness. That's Miyamoto Musashi's humane charm. We'd like to create the Miyamoto Musashi that no one has ever seen before, together with Kimura Takuya-san. Please don't miss it.

http://www.tv-asahi.co.jp/musashi/ The other cast has not been announced yet, but some fans tweeted they saw Maki Yoko and Kagawa Teruyuki shooting in Kyoto as well, so I guess they're fixed. Just one thing... I like Sawamura Ikki (as the rumor said), but I don't think he suit Sasaki Kojiro. I feel that Kojiro has to be played by an actor with more charm. It's Ichikawa Somegoro, in my book. *praying hard* Really looking forward to know the other cast ^o^
