It's a beautifully sunny day but I'm full of cold, so I've just had a really long nap before heading up to Islington for some weird play (the only thing I can remember from the description of it is that it features full-frontal nudity so I kind of hope we don't end up on the front row) that a friend is dragging me to see.
But before that...
last night I and a horde of fangirls went to see Winter Soldier! Some random thoughts:
In the comics I love Sam and Steve's friendship, and I thought that translated fantastically to the screen. Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans have great chemistry, and whoever on tumblr said their introduction was like a meet cute scenario was totally right. And I love that, after knowing him for about ten minutes, Steve trusted Sam enough to turn up at his door as a fugitive, and know that Sam would take him and Natasha in. Also, the flying suit is awesome, and I want a Falcon action figure!
Oh god, that Peggy scene. ;_________; I was SOBBING, and I definitely wasn't the only one. The level of angst in this movie was really, really good for me. I love how Steve just stopped when he realised who he'd been fighting, and didn't even try to resist arrest. My heart broke at the repetition of, "with you to the end of the line", and at Bucky fishing Steve out of the water. And the look on Bucky's face in the post-credits scene, OMG. I now want allllll the fic in the world about Steve and Sam searching for Bucky.
Natasha! I loved the insights we got into her character, and the one tear that she sheds as she watches Fury "die." I think it's a bit of a shame that they seem to have taken away her back story with Bucky, although I understand that her being the age she is in the comics and having the history with him that she does might have further complicated a story that was already hella twisty.
I'm not sure the whole thing about Hydra totally worked, and the threat of the helicarriers never felt quite real, but the baddies are usually the least interesting part of Marvel movies for me. Except for Loki. I'm very interested in the way they've changed Bucky's story from the comics: he was resuscitated by Hydra... which was part of SHIELD... but then he worked for the Russians? I'm not entirely clear on that part, but luckily I'm seeing it again tomorrow so I'll pay more attention this time!
And I adored Steve's little notebook of things to catch up on, and Maria Hill's everything, and Steve and Natasha on the lam together!
