Firstly, thanks for your compliment on my fanfic. :)And a bonus point for the Sherlock quote! ;)
I can, and do, definitely feel affection towards people. Even (platonic) love. Not sexual desire or attraction, though.
So how do I write it? Well... I fake it. *g* I mean, I've never been a time-traveling alien, either, or a man, and I write about that, so...
It's difficult, though. It mostly stems from what I've learned from reading (both fiction and non-fiction) about sex. And I'm never sure if what I write is actually hot. I write it on an "Okay, this should work for sexuals... I think..." basis.
I could never do it without my betas (a huge shout-out to the fantastic wendymr, and especially to canaana, without whom I never would have started writing smut at all. Whenever I sent out something smutty to beta, I'm all panicky -- "Is this hot? It's supposed to be hot! Do you think it works? Is it plausible??? Is it just weird? Can I post this? Help!" -- and they hold my hand and tell me to calm down and post. *g* (After making other invaluable beta comments on the story as a whole and the smut scene, of course.)
I don't write smut for smut's sake. I just don't find PWP at all interesting. But it was canaana's fic that made me understand that smut can be an incredibly powerful tool to highlight aspects of the characters and their relationship.
Sex is an important driving force in most people's lives, and I feel as an author it's important to include it to portray (most) characters realistically. But I mostly use it to say something about the underlying affection, trust, and love--and these are things I do feel.
Just need you to know: you are my favorite author EVER! I keep reread your works, actually I'm doing it right now 'cause they are so affectionate and tender and - they make me feel content and safe (something you don't get enough in real life), especially The Deal verse.
(And yeah. Your fics ARE hot. But they are so more than that!)
they are so affectionate and tender and - they make me feel content and safe (something you don't get enough in real life), especially The Deal verse. This makes me incredibly happy! :) This is exactly what I aim for (and also what *I* get out of my own fic, and other (smut or not) fics I like.
(And yeah. Your fics ARE hot. But they are so more than that!) THANK YOU! :) You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you say that. :) :) :)
