Happy International Coming Out Day, everyone!
In the spirit of the day, for those of you who didn't know yet: I'm asexual.
Since that orientation is sadly not all that well known, I'll include a brief explanation for those of you going "What? Yamx is an amoeba?" right now. ;)
What is asexuality?
It's a sexual orientation. It's just like being straight or gay or bi, except... not. Asexuals don't feel sexual attraction. That doesn’t mean they can't have romantic relationships - only some asexuals are aromantic - or form close and lasting attachments. It just means we don't look at someone and think "Oh wow, I'd hit that!" (Or whatever it is sexuals think. ;) ) It also doesn’t mean that asexuals can't have sex, and it's not the same as celibacy - it's an inborn orientation, not a choice.
Instead of going into a lot of details about all the ins and outs, I'll link to a great article on the subject that summarizes the central points:
BBC H2GS: Asexuality.
There's also the Asexual Visibility and Orientation Network (AVEN for short), where you'll find much more info in much more detail, if you're so inclined:
http://www.asexuality.org/ See the background in my icon? That's the AVEN flag. The black stripe stands for asexuals, the gray one for demisexuals, the white one for sexuals, and the purple one for the community. (I'll leave it you to figure out what the "equation" across it means. *g* It's not part of the actual flag, though, I just added that for the icon.)
As you can see at the bottom, I've created an asexuality tag for my journal. It's still going to be mostly fanfic and fandom related posts, but every once in a while, I'll make posts about asexuality-related issues. They'll be tagged and titled accordingly, so if you don't care/dislike asexuality, don't read them.
Feel free to ask questions. (Really, ask me anything. I reserve the right not to answer, of course, but I'm generally pretty open. :) )
