Fascinating.

This entire entry is going to be epic semi-coherent spaz about the Star Trek movie, which I saw with my mom and brother tonight at 7. It is massively spoilery. You have been warned.

This.

Movie.

Was.

Freaking epic.

If I were cruel (or kind, depending on your opinion), I'd stop there. (Un)Fortunately for you, I have a ton more to say.

I walked into this movie with very little background on Star Trek. I was relying on my mom to explain references for me. Evidently there were a metric ton of references to other Star Trek movies, and my mom picked up every single one.

And you people wonder where I get my geekery.

I think once the plot really kicked in, I had a much better understanding and greater enjoyment of everything because I watch Doctor Who. Don't ask me how the hell my brain worked that out, but the crazy time travel AU whattheshit somehow works when your other starship is a TARDIS. It certainly did help me pick up on the time travel thing before anyone else - the minute they showed the old!Spock hologram, actually. Plus, the guy who played Scotty looked like James Moran and acted like David Tennant. I was sitting there giggling like a total moron for about five minutes afterhe showed up.

SPEAKING OF ACTORS. Zachary Quinto was freaking fantastic. I've never seen him in a non-Sylar role, and I now think that he needs to get away from Heroes and do something bigger and better, because he was an incredible Spock. I just. He. Wow.

The guy who played Nero, however, was...well, to borrow a phrase from my mom, he chewed the scenery. The man was not a good actor for this part, but he made me laugh. "Hello, Christopher. I'm Nero. :D" He was, however, a psycho tattooed ninja, and somehow this made me happy.

Slusho was an available drink at the bar. I see what you did thar, Abrahms.

I thought I'd never be able to take Kirk seriously (since, c'mon, originally played by Shatner), but the actor did a fantastic job. He had the "Rebel who may or may not have a cause" type character, but he played him well and added a good deal of depth to him.

...I use fantastic a lot, I've discovered. Sometimes words just cannot convey the utter epic of a film. Sometimes I'm just sleep deprived.

The Verdict: A. Abrahms, make another one. Now. Until then, I'll go see this one again. Because it was awesome.

wow, yay, movie, epic
