Skeptical

Ok, so my friend texted me and she said that when she was on Wikipedia (yeah, I already had doubts at that point) it said something about there being a release date for volume 12 of YnM (And that if it was popular Matsushita might start writing again). So she went to the site it was cited from (which was in japanese) and then asked a friend of hers ( Read more... )

question, manga

So my friend sent me a translation:

After an 8 year long hiatus, Matsushita Yoko's "Descendants of Darkness" (serialized in Hakusensha's (publisher name) "Flowers and Dreams") will return with the 12th volume in January 2010. "Descendants of Darkness" is a series about the adventures of the Death God Tsuzuki Asato and his partner kurosaki Hisoka as they solve difficult cases while working for Ten Kings Hall (an organisation that judge the dead) of the Enma (King of Hell)'s summons division. During this period of hiatus, the last publication in "Flowers and Dreams" (2006, No.6) consisted of sidestories. This is actually an 8 year break if you consider that the volume 11 tankobon (standalone book) appeared in December 2001. In the 12th volume there will be massive changes to the original content. The revival of this series is uncertain. Based on the response of this new volume, the fate of the series will be announced in "Flowers and Dreams"

If it's the dialogue she changes rather than the art, then I suppose the new version would become canon. o.o

Oh lol, retcon..

Well, "massive changes to the original version" happened when the first Nagare related chapters went from serialization to print. Basically, we all got a bunch of surprise snakey buttsex.

I'm wondering if something like that's going to happen again?

As for changes in the dialog, at least we have Theria's translations to compare with!

Oh that's true! Went from shots of walls to snake porn.

Well now I'll be very disappointed if these 'massive changes' don't involve random surprise porn.

I actually liked the pre-snake porn versions better myself. Not for the lack of porn, but because Nagare seriously looked like he was in agony in them.

The surprise snake porn was just kinda comical. Awesome. But comical.

Hmm, really? I only recalled walls. I'll check my scans again to see what you mean. :) I suppose she had to emphasise his expression what with the lack of tentacles and all...

It was... yes, so shocking it was comical. XD The main shock/hilarity was when Viz actually printed it though. Sooo glad they had that editor when it got to that issue. <3

There were a few pages, I think the ones from the first "HEY LOOK I'M NAKED AND BEING MOLESTED BY A SNAKE!" spread (it came like a chapter or two before the actual snakey buttsex IIRC) where he was sprawled out over a table and just looked absolutely miserable ( ... )

Well, I say editor because I noticed the editor was different between the two issues, which would explain the total change in policy (someone's head is surely faaar less 'offensive' than snakey tentacle rape..), though I do like the idea that they just decided 'fuck it' and printed it in full. :)

But yeah, that was a particularly daft edit, after they already had the panel of them having sex at the top...

The censors they make make sense, though I do think it's a shame to edit it. But I suppose when something's aimed towards kids (in a country which has different ideas on what's inappropriate), it's not really going to work to age it up to a demographic it's totally unintended for...

And I think it would be an interesting post. => Especially since I'll likely have some troubles finding mine since they don't neatly fit into the folders of issues by book or by Hana to Yume only chapters...

Ahh. Editor as in the person who does the retouch and lettering or editor as in the person overseeing the project?
The people who do retouch and lettering (and I generally hear referred to as editors, despite the fact that they have editors above them that well... edit things. It's confusing!) have no say in what gets edited, just that they've gotta do it. But I guess that could make sense if the person in charge of the project overall changes. I should take a look at who did the editing for those volumes and see if my friend who works for Viz knows them!

Yeeeah. That's what got me. It was like "Ok, this is obviously gay sex. Like, full on anal. And you're worried about a blow job?!"

Yeah, I meant the overall editor. :) As I recall that's what they were down as in the issue, though I can't say I've looked at the credits recently...

And yeah, I know right? XD It's not like you could even see anything, if you could that'd be different... but you can see more in the top panel! Not to mention they didn't censor the 'glowing cone' scene in volume 3, but I suppose they'd pretty much have to take out the whole panel if they did.

Ahh, that makes sense then!

I'd really like to find the people in charge and ask. I'm not angry. Just curious. And confused. ):

Heh, yeah. I'd be curious to know the real reason too! I was quite annoyed at the time, but less so now, especially after all the stuff they left in...

I was, and still am baffled. It didn't make sense at the time, and years later it still doesn't make any.
