Ever since the mid 90s or so, the gaming market has been flooded with bad games, made mostly by american developers. I don't really like the style of american video games. There are a few exceptions: most of the blizzard games, some other PC RTS games, and i suppose I could even include sports games. But there's just something about the feeling I get from them that is very unlike their japanese counterparts. Take the Grand Theft Auto series for example. They're fun games. And they're wildy popular. But the feeling I get from playing those games is unlike the feeling I get from playing a game like Chrono Cross, Metal Gear Solid or even Yoshi's Island on SNES. Playing GTA or some other shitty game like it doesn't evoke the feelings that I feel are necessary before I'll spend money and time on them, like I would on something like Xenogears. GTA3 (the best selling PS2 game in the US) succeeds in what it is. Interactive entertainment designed to sell to the american public. Games like Dragon Quest 8 (the best selling PS2 game in japan) succeed in what they are. Video games designed to sell to the japanese public. Japanese games are different. They have emotion. Chrono Trigger moved me to tears when I was thirteen years old. (sad yes, but I'm no long afraid to admit it) These shitty american games can't even come close to getting to me in the same way.
In other news, thanksgiving break was wonderful and the next time Katelyn comes home I am locking her in my basement so she cannot go back to DC.
Back to Purdue in a month. What a change it will be. I miss the library...
