Your main fandom of the year?
It divides very neatly in two: Ugly Betty for the first half of the year, X-Men First Class for the second half.
Your favorite film watched this year?
Despite all the fic I've produced and continue to produce, NOT "X-Men First Class," which is about seven good scenes amid a pile of total incoherence. (But it reawakened my love of the X-canons, and even got me into comics, so still good value for the dollar.) Honestly, it might be "Into the Abyss," Werner Herzog's documentary about a death-penalty case and also about the futility of all life, which makes me sound both much more intellectual and much more glum than I actually am. But Herzog just gets to me. I also loved the hell out of HP7.2, which maybe rights the balance a bit.
Your favorite book read this year?
SOON I WILL BE INVINCIBLE, by a mile.
Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
So many contenders here! "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds? "Never Forget You" by the Noisettes? "Halo" by Beyonce? "Stray Italian Greyhound" by Vienna Teng? Bond's cover of "Kashmir"? It's all good.
Your favorite TV show of the year?
I'm less into TV-based fandom right now than I have been in almost 20 years -- YIKES -- but "Fringe" remains my most-loved.
Your favorite LJ community of the year?
I'm less into LJ right now than I have been in almost ten years -- YIKES. But
daniel_betty was awfully good to me when I was posting regularly, and my NYR is to repay that by finally finishing my UB virtual season five.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Comics, specifically Chris Claremont's early "Uncanny X-Men" run, as well as "Alpha Flight" and "New Mutants." This is an expensive discovery! And I don't think I'll ever become a full-on comics reader, in no small part because the modern comics industry seems even less interested in a female audience than it did in 1979, which is horrifying. But I'm adoring the comics I'm reading, and enjoying the incredible malleability of the canon.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
That XMFC didn't fulfill its enormous potential. That "Fringe" continues to not be a huge hit. That there is not some secret treasure-trove of SOON I WILL BE INVINCIBLE fic out there for me to find.
Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
Logan "Wolverine" Howlett. Yeah, he can be a total jerk sometimes, but you know what? He's always entertaining. Either he's being awesome, or he's doing fail with such incredible style and verge that it's nonetheless fascinating. I needed such hijinks this year. Harry Potter, Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner and Piotr "Colossus" Rasputin all get honorable mentions, as do Charles and Erik, though they both have to take penalties for bad behavior.
Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Olivia Dunham will always win this until "Fringe" goes off the air. But I love me some Amanda Clark/Emily Thorne. And some Ororo "Storm" Munroe. And some Danielle "Psyche" Moonstar. And of course sweet Betty Suarez.
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Harry Potter realizing he must die to kill Voldemort, and just walking out there with zero hesitation, zero self-pity, to do what must be done. This was something I adored in the book and yet thought the film made even better.
The most missed of your old fandoms?
"Ugly Betty," which I hope to amend. "Star Trek: The Next Generation," for no reason I can easily name.
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I am intrigued by as much of "Once Upon A Time" as I've seen so far.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
"Alcatraz."
