Yuletide is uploaded, and tomorrow I travel home by train to Mississippi and the fam. Tonight I am sitting up waiting for this candle to burn out, which is a stupid reason, but whatever: It's meme time.
Your main fandom of the year? "Ugly Betty," which surprised the heck out of me, but the more-or-less fulfillment of my longstanding Betty/Daniel 'ship unleashed the flood.
Your favourite film watched this year? I've been really picky about what films I went to this year, with the result that I've loved almost everything I've seen. "Harry Potter 7.1" was probably my favorite fannish thing, though I also adored "Inception;" in a nonfannish sense, both "Winter's Bone" and "Black Swan" are going to stick with me for a while.
Your favourite book read this year? THE LAST SPEAKERS, which is written by one of the linguists I've talked about on this blog, all about his journeyings around the world, how you learn a rare language, why sometimes it's best not to learn it, and the cultural sensitivity and hard work necessary to do what he does. There's a very hilarious, very poignant scene during his first field work, his doctoral project among nomads in Siberia, who were okay with him living with them, they guessed, but he was going to have to work to earn his keep. But the only task they trusted him to fulfill was collecting yak dung chips to burn as fuel. The scene has him out on the frigid Siberian steppes, examining yak dung for combustibility potential and wondering if this, really, is how he wants to spend his life. Happily, the answer is yes.
Your favourite album or song to listen to this year? There's no one, but I've been enjoying Janelle Monae, Beyonce, Melanie Fiona and Deborah Cox.
Your favourite TV show of the year? "Fringe," which is riding this brilliant story arc like it's a blazing comet across the sky.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year? Ficlet bingos, which have resulted in virtually all my fic output this year -- which is more than it's been in a long while.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? "Undercovers," which had a lot of potential but dicked around about realizing it until the axe fell.
Your TV boyfriend of the year? Daniel Meade. I like 'em sweeter these days. Steven Bloom gets the pure estrogen-flood factor trophy, though.
Your TV girlfriend of the year? Olivia Dunham. Runner Up: Shannon Bieste, aka my Coach Baboo.
Your biggest squee moment of the year? The penultimate episode of "Ugly Betty," aka "The Past Presents The Future," in which Justin came out to his family and Daniel realized he was in love with Betty, and I went all POOF into pink tinsel.
The most missed of your old fandoms? "Alias," which nothing seems likely to replace in my heart, though thanks to ficlet bingos I'm writing it again.
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to? "Community" sounds intriguing, though I am still wary due to the HIMYM burn -- I mean, HIMYM was cute but people built it up like it was GENIUS forever, so tuning in for cute was a letdown. This "Lost Girl" show looks good, as does "Downton Abbey." And the BBC has, like, five shows I want to watch next year: "Outcasts," "Upstairs Downstairs," "Hattie," and whatever the shows are with Emma Thompson and Christopher Ecclestone. Thank God for BBC America, is what I'm saying.
BURN CANDLE BURN.
