Tivo, Vampire Diaries, Fringe and the diner around the corner

Oct 16, 2009 11:23

I am currently in the diner two blocks from my house that is open 24 hours and has free internet access, or, as I have dubbed it, the "second kitchen." Although I am definitely still settling in, post-move, and homesick for NYC, I am already 100% sold on my new neighborhood. It's safe, it's quiet and virtually anything I could want is within 10 blocks' walk. (Art house movie theater? Check! Post office? Check! Best Buy? Check! Day spa? Check! And so on.) Tomorrow, Henry the Handyman of Excellence will be taking care of my coaxial and ethernet cords so that they aren't underfoot all the time, and Tuesday, a couple of storage pieces I ordered will arrive. So I am close enough to settled to feel vast, vast relief.

TiVo update! (Yes, I know you thought there could be no saga as thrilling as THE TOE, but the fun never stops around here.) After some investigation, I found the splitter in the box and determined that, although my TiVo cannot record two shows at one time, if I install the splitter properly, I will be able to record one show and watch another. This will take care of Thursdays when I'm at home, and otherwise I will grab what episodes I must. Of course, I didn't figure this out until AFTER last night's TV, but I have it going forward. Were I to install my VCR, I could literally tape another episode, but I just don't think I'm inclined to go down that road.

Let us discuss what TV made the cut last night!

The Vampire Diaries -- Another fun episode, featuring two of my favorite-ever things: flashbacks in period costume and photographs of the actors as little kids used for the characters. geekturnedvamp, you were right about Catherine, and kudos to Nina Dobrev for turning in such a creepy performance as a dramatically different character. My predictive powers were better when it came to Vickie, though; I think it is going to be FASCINATING watching her deal with having become a vampire. And something about the whole day hanging out with Damon -- him essentially toying with her and turning her out of boredom while he's cooped up in the house -- just hit me as being very right for both of them, not to mention weirdly hot with the dancing around.

I LOVE ELENA. I love how sure she is of herself, how smart she is and how she is basically handling all of this just the way we always wish the heroine would. And I love Stefan too - they've found the humor and purpose behind his quiet exterior, and I like how he is with Elena.

I missed Bonnie and Caroline, but it made sense that they'd focus in tight on the three principals this week. This gets big points just for Damon and Stefan discovering their weird new game of "football" while Damon is wearing, like, a homburg or something.

Fringe -- Astrid got out of the lab! We saw a flashback to Peter's abduction! You're gonna be fine! Moments like these -- particularly Walter's nonstop tormenting of the other FBI agent -- carried me over a major beef I had with the (generally cool) premise. Yes, I think tapping into other people's dreams could be addictively pleasurable -- if you were tapping into the cool dreams, like the one I had where Jude Law was sucking my toes. Would tapping into nightmares really be as much fun? Wouldn't you want to avoid that? Also, every single person reacted to their nightmares violently, by lashing out, supposedly b/c they could not tell dreams from reality. While this is certainly a possibility, my usual response in nightmares is either to run the hell away from the problem, or to respond in some completely surreal fashion, like by assuming the monster cannot kill me if I find fresh-squeezed orange juice. I would have liked to see a nonviolent response to one of the nightmares -- and some of those responses could have been as damaging/outrageous as violence was, maybe even more. It would have showed more imagination, IMHO. That said, the dream imagery was terrific, and I enjoyed the ep overall.

Though I have enjoyed having blue hair, it is already starting to fade to a sort of seafoam, and the constant shedding has me convinced that I must un-blue before I head to Northern Ireland and the habitat of the welcoming rheanna27 a week from Sunday. However, my hair is still bleached almost to the root, so I have decided to go to a salon, get the blue taken out and go blonde for a while. Like I said, the fun never stops.
