1) I am in Chicago, safe and sound and sheltered by
taraljc, and all this is of the good. My stuff is apparently not going to get here until the middle of next week, which is of the bad, but it will all come out in the wash. Right now I am taking the opportunity to get to know Chicago public transit, my new neighborhood, etc.
2) Polanski Op-Ed: One of the many galling points of all of this is that, just a few years ago, when Polanski was up for best director, all these people were saying, "You have to separate the art from the artist." And you know, generally, I do. I love "Rosemary's Baby," and you can have my DVD of "Chinatown" when you pry it from my cold dead fingers. AND I think he should have to face the music for what he did. If Hollywood en masse wanted us to separate the criminal acts from the artistry before, why are they insisting on conflating the two now, and arguing that the artistry trumps the criminal acts? I don't know if it has as much to do with Hollywood specifically as just a particular segment of wealth and power, but this whole circle-the-wagons thing with Polanski speaks of massive, massive entitlement.
3) I liked the second episode of "Flashforward" more than the first but remain unsold. I liked this week's "Bones" and "Fringe," though they were mostly fillery. Shockingly awesome this week: "The Vampire Diaries," which may never be a great show but shows signs of becoming a good and highly entertaining one -- and one with young female characters who have personalities/agency/opinions, if that matters to fandom any longer. (It is, however, way too white.)
4) Tomorrow I am dying my hair blue. Will report.
