Shishido had left a little while ago...which meant one thing for Gakuto, free reign of any and all things the older elf considered stupid and/or dangerous, which in this case, meant anything Gakuto thought was fun, so of course he ignored the blood elf for in favor of what he wanted to do. There was a particularly large tree in camp, and if maneuvered correctly, he could get to any other tree in the area, the branches stretching to reach one another, it might as well have been a road in the sky, for all Gakuto cared. While exploring this new arrangement, Gakuto didn't notice Ohtori set up something nearby until he was already deeply concentrated, curious, Gakuto snuck his way through the tree quietly before coming to a branch that hung right above the other. Swinging to hang upside down, Gakuto glanced curiously at the tall boy, "Whatcha doing?"
Choutarou had found a place not far from camp that had a clear view of the horizon. Setting up his things he started to paint. He didn't know what it was but the sunset looked different out here than it did back home. It was refreshingly new. He got so engrossed in his work he jumped a foot when Gakuto appeared in his face almost falling off the rock he had been sitting on. "Wha? What?" He looked up shocked.
Grinning slightly, he'd never get tired of startling people, his shadow part helped, he supposed, "What're you doing?" he repeated, swinging himself back up so he wasn't right in Ohtori's face, and just leaning down on the branch, almost laying down, his legs swinging lightly.
Choutarou straightened up on his seat and angled his head so that he was watching the elf above him. "I was just painting the sunset." He gestured to the setting sun on the horizon. "It seems different out here and I just wanted to get it down."
Raising his eyebrows he watched Gakuto hanging in the tree for a moment before asking. "So does Shishido-san know you're up there?" In the past few weeks they had been traveling together Choutarou had witnessed many fight's between the two other elves. Some of them about the most random things. One reoccurring argument seemed to have to do with Gakuto and trees. Though Choutarou had yet to figure out why.
"Nope!" Gakuto admitted freely and grinning widely, not really concerned in the least since the other elf wasn't present at the moment, "Do you think it's just a coincidence that I'm up here when he's gone?" came the rhetorical and teasing question. He picked off a leaf from the tree and played with it between his fingers, unconcerned, and not making a move to come back down. "Besides, whatever Shishido thinks, I won't fall." he said firmly, carefully ignoring the fact that he did once, but that was a completely different matter.
"Nothing is certain." Choutarou smiled. "Shishido-san doesn't worry for nothing." Watching Gakuto he decided maybe now would be a good time to find out a little more about the shadow elf. "Did something happen with you and a tree before?"
At that, Gakuto paused for a moment, and his face flushed red in embarrassment, and he looked away, sputtering slightly, "N-no. And whatever Shishido told you, it isn't true." he said, ready to cover all his bases, just in case....Shishido always did like to give him a hard time about it, he wouldn't put it past the other to tell Ohtori everything.
"I'm sure." Choutarou streached out his words and raised his eyebrows at Gakuto's stutter. Shishido hadn't told him anything about why he didn't like Gakuto up in trees but obviously something had happened. The first time the argument had come up he had asked Shishido but hadn't really gotten an answer back. Shishido had just shook his head and told him not to worry about it and wandered off muttering about idiots.
"So what are you doing up there? Did you find another bird?" Collecting feathers, Choutarou found, was one of the main reasons that Gakuto would climb up into the trees in the first place. Well the main reason next to seeing Shishido flip out.
Glad he dropped the subject, Gakuto perked back up and smiled, "Naw, not today. But you see that tree over there?" he pointed to the tallest one that he'd been using, "Well, all the trees have grown so close together, you can use one to get to the other, I was testing it out. And it's worked out perfectly." he said smugly, proud of his own intuition. Then he skipped subjects, something he was known for, forever jumping to new topics in conversations, "So how do you know Shishido anyway?" He knew that they lived next to each other, but Shishido always seemed to give in so easily when it came to Ohtori, "I know you lived in the same town...but wasn't he always traveling?"
Choutarou shrugged and turned his focus back to his painting. "You know how Shishido-san's father can't travel any more. Well they moved into Verbes when I was really young and Shishido-san stayed with his parents for a few years before his family's traveling urge got both him and his brother. I got to know him then since our mothers connected right away since they are both healers." Choutarou looked at the horizon and realized he needed another shade of yellow for the sun. Reaching down into this bad he got some more paint and started mixing them together. "For the first few years Shishido-san and his brother stayed just in Raytin since they both still pretty much looked like kids to humans. So they would end up back in Verbes a lot. And every time they'd be back Shishido-san would come and hang out with me and tell me everything he'd seen." Choutarou smiled at the memory of Shishido's stories.
"Hmmm, so you guys are good friends..." it wasn't a question, more like a statement, he'd suspected as much, the way to the two interacted, but it was always nice to get that confirmation. It sounded like the other had had a good childhood, Shishido as well....despite his father losing his leg. Part of him was jealous that those two had a nice place to grow up in...a family to look after them. Shaking those thoughts away, Gakuto watched Ohtori paint for a moment, a silence (though not an awkward one) falling over them. "Those must have been good times," Gakuto said wistfully after a moment of silence, probably losing the other since it'd been a little while since either of them talked.
"They were." Choutarou admitted without missing a beat. He had gotten used to multitasking while painting since every time he would go to the woods the squirrels would like to distract him. "While he was around... He would only stick around for a week or so then be off on the road again." Choutarou shrugged knowing that was just how Shishido was. It had hurt a bit when Shishido had first left but overtime Choutarou came to accept that part of his friend. Shishido just wasn't meant to stay in one place.
Finishing up one side of his painting Choutarou shifted to start work on the other side. "I'm sure you've had some good times traveling with Shishido-san yourself."
Grinning, Gakuto nodded, even if the other was focused right now, "Defiantly....beats my old town anyway." he muttered slightly at the end, before coming back to full volume to skip over that moment, "He'd say differently, though" the small redhead laughed lightly, "He'd probably say I'm much more trouble than I'm worth." and had on many occasions. But Gakuto knew he never meant it, else he wouldn't have been allowed to travel with him for so long int he first place.
"That's Shishido-san for you." Choutarou laughed under his breath. It was probably a good thing that Choutarou had meet Shishido when they were younger and he hadn't built up quite so many walls. By the time that Shishido came to speak mainly in sarcastic remarks Choutarou was able to see under his prickly exterior.
They spent a little while longer, not talking about much, or not talking about anything of any consequence, Ohtori painting, and Gakuto swinging from the tree, while they waited for either Shishido to come back or Ohtori to finish with his painting, when he got close to finishing, Gakuto flipped down from the tree to get a better look, nodding in praise. Then he smiled teasingly up at Ohtori before saying, "It's good, but it needs something." with that, he dipped one finger into the paint and left a small yellow dot on Ohtori's nose when he bent down to see what he painting needed. Laughing, Gakuto skipped off to the main part of camp.
Choutarou scrunched up his nose momentarily going crosseyed trying to see the paint that Gakuto had put on him. Giving up he rolled his eyes and grinned. Shaking his head he started to collect his things, being careful with his still wet painting. Once he had every thing he started to walk back at a slower pace than Gakuto all the while thinking how nice days like this were and how he couldn't wait for more to come.
