Chapter Five

It had been nearly two weeks since Draco left Harry. Draco was surprised that Gryffindor welcomed him and let him take Harry’s bed for the time being. After the first week, Hermione convinced Draco he should start returning to classes and getting caught back up. He was hesitant, but after a talk with Dumbledore ending with Draco being allowed to stay with Gryffindor instead of traveling with his typical house, Draco decided to return to classes.

The first couple of classes felt weird, both because he hadn’t been in class for months, and because Harry wasn’t in any of the classes. Thankfully, he had Hermione to help him get caught up and all the extra work helped distract him after class as well. All of his professors weren’t requiring him to make up any of the missed work, but it was hard to jump back in with the class without doing it. Therefore Draco spent most evenings working on homework with Hermione and Ron.

“I went to see him today,” Hermione said abruptly.

Draco didn’t say a word.

“How’s he doing?” Ron finally asked.

“Nothing has really changed. He won’t listen to me anymore. I don’t know what to do,” she explained.

Draco continued to work and say nothing.

“Maybe I should go see him,” Ron said.

Even though Harry never told Ron what had happened, Hermione didn’t hide it from him. She figured Harry would expect her to have told Ron anyways. Ron hadn’t seen Harry since he stayed shut up in his room. He wanted to go see Harry; he wanted to help him somehow, but he didn’t know what to do. But tonight, he changed his mind. Draco had left him two weeks ago and yet nothing had changed with Harry. They needed to try something else.

Harry stayed in bed most days. Ever since Draco left, nothing propelled him to ever want to get out of bed. He didn’t want to eat, but he couldn’t let the food brought to him go to waste completely. He didn’t know who was bringing him food, but a tray appeared three times a day and Harry tried to eat some of it at least. However, today nothing appeared. Therefore, Harry ate nothing. His stomach ached with hunger, but he still couldn’t bring himself to get out of bed and leave the room. He laid there thinking how long he could go on like this when he heard a knock on the door.

“Go away!” Harry shouted. He didn’t want to see anyone.

“It’s me, mate,” Ron said, letting himself in anyways.

“Ron? Why are you here?”

“Because I’m the last chance of talking some sense into you. Scary, huh?” Ron said, with a light laugh as he sat on the edge of the bed.

Harry didn’t find the humor in it. “Who asked you to come here?”

“No one. I decided to.”

“Why?” Harry asked, sitting up in bed.

Draco couldn’t help but be surprised as he looked over Harry’s body. Hermione had told him Harry lost a lot of weight and looked quite sickly, but he still wasn’t prepared for the actual sight.

“Because you need help, Harry.”

“I don’t need help. I don’t need anything but my child back.”

“That’s not going to happen Harry. You have to come to terms with that. No amount of tears will bring that child back. Starving yourself won’t help either. You have to look at it in a positive way. That child is now with your parents, being taken care of. You have to start taking care of yourself. Don’t you get it? That’s why Draco left. You don’t think he really left you because he doesn’t love you, do you? He’s staying with us in the Gryffindor house. Imagine that! Draco Malfoy, a Gryffindor, temporarily. All for you. All because he’s hopelessly in love with you and he just wants to see you happy. He wasn’t able to bring you back, so he left you to bring yourself back.”

Ron noticed the tears forming in Harry’s eyes as Harry looked away from him, but he wasn’t going to let the tears stop him from being honest.

“We’re all worried sick about you. We just want to see you get back to a normal life as much as you can. Who knows, maybe if you pick yourself up again, you and Draco can end up trying for another child. It’s not like this was a once in a lifetime chance, Harry. You can try again and this time take precautions. But in order to get to that point, in order to get Draco back, you’ve got to get back out there. You’ve got to pick up the pieces and put yourself back together. I hate seeing you this way, and maybe what I’m saying is making you feel worse, I don’t know. I’m not good at this kind of stuff, Hermione is. But she’s been trying for weeks now and nothing. Draco tried for months and nothing happened. But this is it, Harry. I’m not bringing you food every day anymore. I’m going to tell Hermione to stop checking in on you. You’ve got to come to your senses and realize that this isn’t making anything better. Right? Today is, if anything, worse than two and a half months ago. At least then you had a man that would’ve done anything for you, and two friends who’d do the same. You pushed us away and now you need to pick yourself up and pull us back to you.”

Harry had let the tears fall as Ron spoke. He could hear the anger, the hurt, and the frustration in Ron’s voice. Ron slowly stood up and walked towards the door.

“Goodbye, Harry.”

Harry turned and watched Ron walk out the door. Harry didn’t move; instead, he sat on the bed, staring out the window, letting the tears fall. He knew Ron was right. He knew they all had been right. But something hit him with what Ron said. Maybe it was the thought that his parents were taking care of the child he lost. Maybe it was the thought of none of his friends coming to see him anymore. Maybe it was a combination of it all. Harry looked at the clock: four-thirty. Dinner would be starting at six, like always.

Harry slowly crawled out of bed, his legs weak from rarely getting out of bed, except to use the bathroom. He pulled his house robes out of his drawer and took them into the bathroom. He turned the shower on, nearly scalding hot, and stepped in. It burned, but it felt good. He hadn’t showered in weeks. When he stepped out of the shower, he didn’t grab a towel. Instead he stood in front of the foggy mirror. He wiped off the mirror, put his glasses on and stood there, looking at himself. He ran his hands over his body, feeling the bones he didn’t use to feel. Without even breathing in, he could see his ribs. He was already on the slender side before this, but now he really was. He remembered that day two weeks ago when him and Draco were in the bathroom. Harry wouldn’t show Draco his body, but Draco swore to him he was beautiful.

“How can he think this is beautiful?” Harry said to himself.

Harry dried himself off with a towel and began to get dressed. His clothes didn’t fit like they used to. He went back to the bedroom and searched for a belt to hold up his pants. After finding one and getting the rest of his robes on, he returned to the mirror. He fixed his hair slightly: no more than he ever used to. He went back and sat on the edge of the bed, pulling on his shoes and tying them. He sighed at the thought of how he looked, but he knew it wouldn’t get better. He knew it was now or never. He looked at the clock: five-forty-five.  He then took a deep breath and opened the door.

After Ron came back to the room, he didn’t say a word. Hermione tried to get him to talk, to tell her what he said to Harry, but he wouldn’t. Instead, he sat back down and continued to work. After an hour or so had gone by, Hermione pointed out that it was time for dinner.

“I’m not hungry,” Draco told her.

“Neither am I,” said Ron.

“Well I am, and I’m not going alone, so come on,” she told them.

The two boys signed and followed her down to the Great Hall. Just as she suspected, once food had been put in front of both of them, they were suddenly hungry. The three of them ate quietly, barely speaking to one another except to ask to pass something. Out of nowhere, the hall erupted in a gasp. The three of them turned to the doors of the Great Hall. There stood Harry. Draco grinned from ear to ear and jumped up to greet Harry.

“I don’t know what you said to him, Ron, but I guess it worked,” Hermione said with a smile.

Ron couldn’t help but smile, too, “I guess it did.”

Draco ran all the way to Harry with a smile plastered on his face. He hugged Harry tightly and kissed him.

“I love you, Harry. I’m sorry I left,” Draco said softly.

“I love you, too. You did what you had to. You did what I needed you to do. Thank you.”

The two boys made their way back to Ron and Hermione, who both told Harry how happy they were to see him. Harry agreed and looked at the food.

“Pass me everything. I’m starving,” he said with a smile.
