John Kerry: The Issues
by: Amanda Michelotti
John Kerry, the 2004-2008 presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, has voted for and against a lot of issues we may or may not agree with. Some of these issues are: abortion, education, and where he stands and what he'd like to do to help the economy.
Kerry stands his ground when it comes to a woman's right to choose if she wants an abortion or not. He believes that abortion is the woman's right, and believes that taking that right away would lessen what America stands for. He also knows that women will go to any lengths, just as they did in the past, and get abortions done because they're scared, and just can not have a baby. He believes that it would just be putting, not only that baby to death, but the mother because of the lack of sterile instruments used during the procedure. Kerry also voted no on penalizing criminals who harm an unborn fetus during another crime with the death penalty, because that criminal would have had no prior knowledge of the fact that the woman was pregnant.
On education, Kerry disagrees with the "No Child Left Behind Act" because then the children who couldn't be transferred to better schools, or who couldn't get to the better schools because of lack of transportation, wouldn't ever get the funding needed for their own education. He believes that if a school doesn't do well on the standardized testing, that the school should be more heavily moderated, and be funded more. He also suggests that they should either replace the teachers that are lacking, or send the teachers back to class themselves so they can improve their teaching. Kerry also would like to see more money given to the prison systems to go toward education, and believes that smaller classes should be funded, rather than private tutors. Kerry is also proposing a "National Education Trust Fund" to ensure that all schools are provided with the materials needed to meet high standards.
Kerry plans on building a better economy by creating good-paying jobs, cutting middle-class taxes to raise middle-class incomes, and by investing in the jobs of tomorrow. Kerry says that by cutting middle-class taxes, the middle-class will have more money, therefore having a higher income. To create good-paying jobs, Kerry plans to cut taxes for the businesses that create jobs in America so there isn't as much out-sourcing, which is when businesses take their business overseas to hire employees who don't ask for as much money as we'd expect here in America. They also plan to stand up for workers by enforcing trade agreements.
Enjoy! ^_^
