I've just started realizing what a hell hole central Pennsylvania is. No wonder half the people are poor as hell, are on welfare or can't pay their bills. Between shipping companies over seas and laying people off, we're fucked. Appleton will be laying some people off, or offering some of the older people packages to take voluntary lay offs.

Well they offered the older employees a nice package. I think it's like 2 weeks paid vacation every year you worked, then they get the money they have invested into the company (which for some is thousands), you can get up to 26 weeks of unemployment (which will pay you your average pay..for some thats $1000-2000 every two weeks), and I think something like $20 for every year you worked (this will be for every month until they pass away ((pension I believe it is)) so if you were there 50 years, thats $1000 extra a month). This is all on top of their freaking Social Security. They are fucking nuts if they don't retire early! Thirty-five percent of the company is old enough to retire. So what 35% of 500 or so employees...175 people are old enough to retire. I don't see why they can't call it quits and let the younger more able people work.
Either way she is safe for now. But they eliminated her position (indexer) and she will be moved to another part of the plant come the end of March.
If the older people don't go, she has 53 people under her that could be chosen to be layed-off. I just hope everything works out.
