Title: Snippets of Time Rating: Pg-13 Pairing: YoonSic Summary: Growing up with you- the things we did, paths we crossed and way we changed. A/N: Still need that beta reader, maybe one will drop from the sky?
Winter ended early and spring snuck its way into the air.
The wind was no longer freezing and various shades of green reappeared, here and there, as animals woke up from hibernation. A pretty sight, but Jessica wasn’t feeling it.
She disliked this particular block of time during the year. Restlessness often kept her on an edge. The transition of having the world draped in a white blanket to the rebirth of nature bothered her, and she would be extra irritable and uneasy.
Jessica sighed and rubbed her eyes, leaning her face into her palms; studying felt thoroughly unappealing at the moment, and, while she needed her grades, the need to be away from the confinements of her room had clawed its way to the surface.
Books can wait.
Changing into jeans, she grabbed a warm jacket and strode out of her room.
***
The change in season was obvious, she could literally see more life on the streets. Chirping of birds, fluttering of butterflies and colors that came back to life. Poetic, really.
Almost charming, almost.
She stood at her doorway, a foot to the outside world but not having enough desire to really step out. Stuck in that awkward position, Jessica sat down and looked at everything that passed before her. People, dogs, birds. All of that registered inside her.
The start of spring had always been too peaceful and alive for her to appreciate it properly.
“Um… Hi?”
The tentative greeting caught Jessica’s attention. That childish tone of voice was not the one she loved, but it was familiar all the same.
“Hello, Sooyoung,” Jessica tried to smile but it came across as a grimace.
Sooyoung scratched her head, and for a moment, her features scrunched up in confusion.
“Are you sad?” “I just don’t really like this weather.”
Jessica managed a proper smile this time, her lips tugged up enough for it to be considered friendly. Sooyoung tilted her head, looking thoughtful, as though she was pondering about the authenticity of Jessica’s words. The kid was way more grown up than Yoona, although they were merely a little over three months apart. Even height wise, Sooyoung kind of towered over Yoona, being almost similar in height with Jessica. It was a mystery, how Sooyoung was that tall being just a twelve year old kid.
Seconds later though, Sooyoung lost the serious look and a wide grin broke out, sweeping away the slight frown that was on her face.
“Yeah, I prefer the cold winter too!” Sooyoung made her way towards Jessica, and plopped down beside her, “food taste awesome during winter! Hot beef stew, spicy rice cake, even ice cream in winter!!”
Sooyoung had a dreamy look on her face, licking her lips as her imagination ran wild with food. Looking at the skinny young girl, Jessica was a little captivated by her love for food.
“How do you remain so thin? Any secrets?” “I’m a growing girl! But mummy says I’ve got a hole to another world in my stomach, and all the food falls into it,” Sooyoung shrugged.
Jessica giggled at that thought of a parallel universe in Sooyoung’s stomach. Sooyoung was a cheerful bit of change, and Jessica appreciated it. She could see why Sooyoung was Yoona’s best friend, they had the right balance of pranks, maturity and understanding when put together.
“You’re fully grown, so it won’t work on you,” Sooyoung suppressed a snigger and a friendly smack landed on the arm.
The tension Jessica felt earlier had subsided a little. She enjoyed Sooyoung’s company more than she would have anticipated, even though she simply sat and listened to Sooyoung’s random stories. Sooyoung was engaging, tales from her everyday school life seemed colorful, especially when she slipped in quirky comments and hilarious expressions ever so often.
Jessica was glad to have grown a little closer to Sooyoung through Yoona, and glad too, that Sooyoung dropped the respectful way of talking. The casual tone Sooyoung adopted was way more comfortable for Jessica.
“Yoona asked me to meet her near the playground, she’s going to have some weird battle again. So… I guess I need to go,” Sooyoung stood up and waved before walking away.
It was just a few steps, but Jessica felt like the weariness was forcing its way in again.
Unexpectedly, Sooyoung stopped and turned back, looking mildly awkward.
“Uh, wanna come along? Yoona would be happy.” “Yeah okay!”
Jessica stood up quickly, dusting her bottom and joined Sooyoung at her side.
***
“She’s on a mission to destroy another sub-unit.”
Sooyoung explained to Jessica as they walked to the location of the rendezvous. It was a little surprising, Jessica realized it was the first time in almost six years that she’s actually stepping into the, so-called, battlefield.
Sooyoung was accustomed to it though, Jessica knew she had been somewhat on the fringe of Yoona’s group, but she was too skeptical of their activities to actually join in. Sooyoung rattled off what Yoona told her about the upcoming battle, it was going to be a huge clash involving water gun, paint and other obstacles.
Exciting, Jessica mumbled to herself.
“She’s bent on destroying that group, but I don’t know if she’ll succeed this time.” “Why? Did they quarrel?” “She said that sub-unit was going too far. Have you heard of the Flip Up Girls’ Skirt sub-unit?”
Jessica nodded, it was one of the longest running sub-units, according to Yoona, and she had previously expressed her disapproval with its nature.
“Nowadays, they kinda just prank girls horribly. Yoona has been trying to terminate it for ages, since the flipping skirts days,” Sooyoung sighed and did a series of gesture which Jessica read as ‘don’t know what the shit are in those boys’ brain’, “she said you hated that group too.” “Yeah, I do. It’s stupid and mean, much stupider than all the other little sub-units.” “She said if you’re so against it, all the more she should destroy them. But she has too few people backing her.”
Sooyoung sounded so worried that Jessica was actually drawn into the mood, her heart rate climbing until the thumping became obvious in her ears. Jessica found everything unsettling, as if the danger was real, even though she rationalized that it was all in her head. Yoona would only end up with scrapes, maybe some cuts and perhaps lots of bruises. That would be it.
With all her willpower, she pushed away thoughts of Yoona being surrounded by her kid enemies, totally defenseless, with the boys ready to do her in.
Impossible, Yoona would never let herself be defenseless.
Right?
“There!”
Jessica had been so lost in her thoughts and only at Sooyoung’s shout was she brought back to reality. They were at their destination, a small field beside the playground, cleared of the winter’s snow and Jessica could make out Yoona at one end, busy talking to a few boys.
Too young, holy shit, Jessica wanted to grab Sooyoung and ask her how useful were those younglings but realized that it would only fuel her anxiety if she got an unfavorable answer.
Jessica bit back the thousand and one questions as Sooyoung madly waved and called out to Yoona.
“Yoona!” “Eh? Soo… UNNIE!!!”
The elation in Yoona’s voice, the way her face lit up and grin grew wider as Jessica walked closer was in a typical Yoona fashion. Jessica pulled Yoona to the side, noticed the water gun in her hand and felt the anxiety set in again.
“Yoongie, you’re going against ten odd boys with your pathetic little army?!” “Unnie, they are good!” Yoona declared proudly, but no sooner had she said those words, her expression faltered, “…I think? They’re my only loyal followers in this.”
Yoona actually sounded serious, and if that’s anything to go by, Jessica was sure that this battle was of great importance to her. That determination in Yoona’s eyes was not often seen, and even when she was physically with Jessica, her eyes travelled to the other group of boys, as though she was tactically analyzing them.
“I’ll win, unnie, I can’t watch their stupid pranks anymore,” Yoona gave a confident smile, “You don’t like that group too, right?” “I don’t, but I don’t want you to get hurt either!” “Nah, it’s safe. We’re just using water guns.”
Yoona waved the water gun in her hand around, an act that was supposed to assure Jessica, but it only served to increase her protectiveness. She wanted to be that cool older sister who wouldn’t be all panicky and worried, but at times like this, her protectiveness always slip out.
“Can I join?” “What?!” “Your team, there’s too few people! Three young boys? Seriously?! Let’s pull Sooyoung in as well?”
Yoona was befuddled, what Jessica said something she had never imagined she’d hear. She might be childish for her age but years with Jessica had built an understanding, one that gave her an implicit reminder that Jessica would never participate in a crazy and dirty kids’ game.
The suggestion was a pleasant surprise for Yoona but not a very practical one.
“Unnie, did you hit your head?” “No, Yoongie-” “You just have to sit back and watch me defeat all of them!”
Yoona did a small salute with her water gun, the playfulness was back and Jessica couldn’t stop her from running off. She let out a frustrated sigh. Yoona probably knew she wouldn’t be of much help and her own uselessness in such a situation irked her.
But, really, what else could she do except stand at the sidelines and watch Yoona?
“Let’s just sit over there, Yoong will be fine. Her team has two lives to each member so that it’s fair,” Jessica allowed herself to be led to a nearby bench by Sooyoung, “she’s good enough to annihilate them.” “You know some difficult words for your age,” Jessica responded sullenly, it was just an attempt to keep the conversation going and worry at bay, her eyes were trained on Yoona, who was still deep in her strategy talk with the little boys. “Hanging out with Yoona doesn’t automatically make me vocabulary deficient,” Sooyoung giggled and shook her head, which Jessica took as both a jibe at her and Yoona.
Yoona seemed to be done with the talk, patting each one of her team members on the back, the other team was ready too, fourteen sets of eyes glowering at Yoona. The scene before Jessica looked ripe for a full-blown war. The boys in the other camp were scattered, almost surrounding Yoona’s small army. It was terrible, in Jessica’s eyes.
“Only attacks to the body or face. Arms and legs aren’t counted.”
The boys shouted over, Yoona nodded, that was okay because she’s fast enough. Besides, she had been practicing with her little team for this battle, and she was sure they could pull this off.
“Let’s roll!”
At the sound of that, Yonna’s team split into groups of two, covering each other’s back and sped off to the spots that Yoona mentioned. Woojin and Taesung as the sniping team quickly got into position behind location number one- the huge ass tree- ready to take out anyone near. Yoona and her partner, Taemin, were in the melee team, being faster and more agile. They ran for cover dodging several attacks from the other boys, taking out one boy in the process. The sniping team backed them up whenever they could, shooting jets of colored water at the enemies, disrupting the enemies’ chase.
The plan was progressing smoothly, but an unavoidable wave of attack saw Taemin heroically block the jets of water for Yoona; Yoona countered and felled two people with her shots. However, the other team captured Taemin with a blast of water to the stomach.
Yoona got to the merry-go-round safely, panting hard. Taemin was at least two hundred meters away, guarded by two boys. She had to make a decision quickly-to either save Taemin and risk getting herself shot or to leave him and let her pathetic army dwindle.
The boys were smirking and slowly advancing towards her, her spine stiffened, preparing herself for the attack. Eyes flashed as she estimated the distance and possible outcomes.
“C’mon, a bit closer,” Yoona mumbled to herself, anticipating the perfect moment to strike.
With a burst of speed, she spun the merry-go-round, diverted the enemie’s sight and cut to the other side, surprising the boys. The boys never expected Yoona to actually risk herself to save Taemin and that gave her an edge. They reacted late and she managed to dodge the sprays of water with her swift movement.
The sniping team had moved closer to the action, and while the other nine boys chased Yoona, Woojin crept up to Taemin's captors who were distracted by the clash between the main group and Yoona. Their eyes never left Yoona, mentally preparing for her attack, not noticing the younger boys creeping towards them.
“One down!” Woojin shouted, the enemy didn’t even know what hit him, just an orange stain on his shirt as he cursed in response.
The other captor’s attention was drawn to the sniping team at Woojin’s shout, but both of them were already running off by the time he reacted.
“SHIT!”
The other captor roared in anger at the sight of his fallen ally; it was probably the humiliation of being done in by the younger boys, and unable to stomach it, he left his post and went after the two boys.
“FUCK! DON’T GO!”
The yell from Leeteuk, their leader, came too late. Yoona had taken the opportunity to tap Taemin and released him from captivity. Taemin bolted off by instinct, unfortunately leaving Yoona breatheless and back exposed. Yoona tried to maneuver herself away from the open field, even though her legs were weighed down by tiredness.
The enemies were rushing towards Yoona, gunning for her blood, as Taesung finished off the other boy in the distance.
“YOONGIE! YOUR LEFT!!”
Jessica wasn’t sure if she was allowed to shout and aid Yoona, but it was really a fuck it moment for her. They couldn’t possibly expect her to stay silent, could they?
Yoona immediately picked up Jessica’s voice, it was second nature, her ability to recognize anything that’s Jessica. She swerved, fired two shots and took out two enemies. But inevitably, she was shot on her sides and a cheer from the other team rang out.
It was a momentous point for the other team, to capture the leader. Presumably, it would dampen morale. But Woojin managed to keep his head and turned that careless celebration in his favor by taking out one of the unsuspecting boys before zipping off.
“SHIT! Sooyoung! Yoona’s down!” “Oh man. Relax, she’s still got one life.”
But Jessica couldn’t relax, Yoona was being guarded by the hoard of boys, security much tighter compared to Taemin's capture. They were definitely making sure that Yoona wouldn’t enter the fray again. Jessica was caught up in the battle happening before her, she fought back the immense desire to jump in and pry all those boys away from Yoona. She searched for Yoona’s teammates, they were pretty far away, obviously discussing a counterplan.
But enemies were already approaching.
“Oh my god, oh my god. SOOYOUNG!” Jessica pointed at the enemies who were cautiously making their way to the young boys, finger stabbing the air with vengence as if that action would bring them down. “Calm down! Jeez.” “I can’t!!!”
As Jessica shouted in exasperation, at that same moment, Yoona’s teammate had split up, dashing in different directions at top speed. Woojin shot a jet right at the center of the approaching couple of enemies, successfully distracting them but receiving a shot in return.
With only two teammates mobile, Yoona realized what they were going to do. She gritted her teeth and tried to move into a better position stealthily.
As he approached the captors, Taesung dodged several jets of water before he nose-dived into Yoona’s captors, surprising them, but not able to take anyone down with him. Taemin was right behind, tapping Taesung and releasing him from captivity immediately. One of the captors was shot by Taesung, his limbs not catching up with the realization of the release. Seconds later, they retaliated and got Taesung for good, however, Taemin had managed to squeeze his small body through amidst the chaos and tapped Yoona.
Right after that very moment, Taemin was whacked in the face by green tinted water and fell dramatically.
But, Yoona was freed.
Swiftly she shot two of her captors in the back, before backing off with ninja-like reflexes. Her fallen teammates gave her the thumbs up, similar proud smiles on their faces.
It was up to her now.
Three against one, Leeteuk was down, without a leader it made the enemy easier to handle. However, numbers wise, she was at a disadvantage.
“Hey. How about a truce,” Leeteuk was sitting on the ground and panting slightly, unable to mask the scowl, “we’ll stop our pranks for… three months.” “No,” Yoona shouted over, “it’s all or nothing.” “You can’t win, we have three.”
Yoona surveyed the battlefield, the three boys were approaching her menacingly, confident grins plastered on their face.
“Yeah? Says who?”
Yoona darted to the side, mustering all the energy in her, she ran towards Woojin. She heard the clumsy scrambles to catch up, the shouts and the jets of water firing. Fortunately, she was fast enough and the only attacks that landed were on her legs. With a last spurt she managed to tap Woojin.
Jessica screamed at the top of her lungs, jumping up and down and pumping her fists, too enthusiastically. Sooyoung was stunned at that crazy transformation, but when the shock wore off, she instantly scooted away and settled at the other end of the bench, embarrassed to the bone.
“Let’s floor them!” Yoona swung an arm over the young Woojin, a smirk graced her sweat stained face. “Yeah, noona! Let’s go!”
The devilish glint in Yoona’s eyes visibly shook the enemies’ moral-their leader was down, it was now three against two with Yoona being superior in terms of speed and skill.
With a sudden thump, one of the boys threw his water gun down, and held up his hands in surrender. The other two boys looked at each other, lost and confused due to this unexpected development. They were promised an easy battle, a proud moment to reign victorious over Yoona, but the person who promised all those was just shouting at them from a distance. He was hopping mad and doing nothing else constructive.
“We surrender too,” the other two boys dropped their water guns as well, their face tired from all the running, defeat was clear in their eyes. “Good call,” Yoona said with a smug look, “Hey, Leeteuk. Your sub-unit has been officially destroyed by me, and nothing like it will ever form again.” “Shit! What’s the fun in this then?!”
Yoona grinned victoriously and was greeted by high fives from her teammates all over. It was a battle that topped her list. Proud of her own victory she began to search for Jessica, expecting her look of approval.
“YOONGIE!”
Jessica did a Yoona, a surprised hug from the back with only a call of the name as warning. She hugged Yoona tightly, pride and worry mixing, at that point, it didn’t matter that she was sitting on the ground surrounded by wide-eyed young boys.
“Heheh, unnie!” “Fantabulous! It was exciting!”
Releasing Yoona from the hug, Jessica patted her head, smiling widely. It took a second for her to realize that her earlier melancholy had bubbled and evaporated during this whole time.
“Unnie, I’m the best right?” “Yeah, you’re the best!”
[A/N 2:]A/N:The first ever action scene I've written in my life, nerve wrecking to post it *shudders* Hopefully it was okay?
