working

I'm working as many hours at Price Chopper as I can without being full time. I asked about adding four or five hours and all of the benefits and being a full-timer. Their response: Not likely. "A lot of workers have been here for over two years and are still not full time." Bastards. Damn capitalism and the way it requires the rich to swindle and cheat the working class in as many ways as it can think of.

Work is fine. It isn't terrific, but it isn't bad. I'm making friends and making money. True, my shoulders get sore and I am worth way more than $7 an hour. How can anyone get anywhere on $7 an hour? At this rate, I will forever be dependent on other people... so I have a plan. Sort of. I'm going to see about becoming a stocker. (Stocker, not stalker. Sound the same, but not the same.)

I can't believe that I spend so many hours of my life being at work, going to work, or getting ready for work. If I'm not at work, it seems like I am in the shower or in bed. It's not true: I have been to Burlington a couple times and the Harvest Market in Underhill all just last week... but it seems like I am spending a huge part of my life asking people if they have their Price Chopper Advantage Card with them. And, beyond that, I really do feel that if they want me to do their shit, they should pay me better. Minimum wage is still not a livable wage in Vermont. (At least not if you have loans to pay off.)

I suppose I'll never have a car. Eventually I'll probably get an apartment. Sooner or later I HAVE to. However, I don't see a lot of luxuries in my future.

Alana said that teaching in Japan pays well and that she was able to send a third of her paycheck home each week. Wouldn't that be lovely? I would finally be able to save money.

Another random thought: Since I began working at a grocery store I realized that many of the things given to us to help us "save" money actually make us spend more. Discounts (like this weeks "Buy one bag of Lays potato chips and get two bags free") don't save me money... because I wouldn't have bought chips in the first place. So, when I do buy them, I've now spent $3 that I wouldn't have otherwise. I bought a little card that saves money at restaraunts... but not if you don't go to them. And the store spends a lot of money advertising new sales and trying to create hype about products. Just think about all of the sales flyers that are designed, printed and delivered. Then consider all of the little signs put on front of the shelves. I learned first hand yesterday that each one of those is put up and taken down... and it is a lot of work. Consider the salary of the workers who do it. And consider the whole system and workers necessary to keep track of the Price Chopper card stuff to see what people buy and do market research. Now just think how much money they would save if they skipped all of that crap...

Oreo's might be $1.00 a pack then. And then I would buy them. But they probably wouldn't. I'm probably just being silly.
