I would offer up the book 'The Killer Angels' by Michael Shaara. It's about the Battle of Gettysburg and the day before. It goes into the minds of actual commanders that were there to give the reader an idea of what they were thinking about. It's just amazing. I've already read it about twice and plan on reading it again this summer. It's especially interesting for me because I'm a history major and plan on taking a Civil War during my fall term.
If I could pick two, I would also say the book 'Blood Red Snow', the actual diary of a German soldier on the Eastern front during WWII. It's very insightful and provides a look at the other side of the war.
