Author's Notes: Written for my second prompt at rarepair_shorts. Once again as soon as I started writing for this prompt my original ideas about how it would go flew right out the window. With this prompt I just couldn't resist making a vague reference to the fact that John gets injured a lot in the books, even though I absolutely adore him.

To be an auror was to run great risk. To be a muggle-sympathizing half-blooded auror who had gotten himself involved with a woman well on her way to becoming a prominent politician in addition to being the sister of a well known bloodtraitor, was to run an even greater risk. They both knew this, but it didn't make it an easier.

"John!" He staggered back against the bedroom door with a grunt as Amelia threw her arms around his neck. His back hurt like hell but he didn't try to push her off. "I was so worried," she murmured, burying her face against his neck. John kissed her hair before slowly wrapping his arms around her. He was exhausted but mustered enough strength to lift her up and carry her back to her bed. "Are you alright?"

John smiled reassuringly as he set her down and climbed onto the bed next to her. "Just tired... and a bit sore," he admitted, running his hand through her hair as he settled back against the pillows. He sighed heavily and closed his eyes. It took approximately four seconds until Amelia had shifted closer, pressed tight against his side as she began to shakily unbutton his shirt.

"...Mel?" he questioned, wrapping his arm around her, and spreading his hand out on the small of her back. Amelia sat up and shifted over so that she was straddling him. He opened his eyes slowly and placed his hands on her hips. "Love, talk to me," he murmured, concerned by the uncharacteristic silence.

She sighed heavily. "I was worried. You could have been hurt. You could have-" she broke off abruptly and shook her head. John often teased his girlfriend for worrying too much (it was going to give her premature gray hair). "I don't want to lose you," she confessed, suddenly clutching tightly to his shirt. John watched her carefully for a moment before rolling them over, resting more of his weight against her than he usually would as he realized he needed to reassure her.

"You haven't," he whispered against her ear. "You won't. I'm here. I'm okay," he continued, ignoring the fact that the last of those statements was only true after a visit to a healer. Now wasn't the time. He shrugged his shirt off completely and Amelia slipped her hands around to his back, pulling him closer though there wasn't much space to begin with. John kissed her hard. He could feel the exhaustion melting away as she kissed him back desperately.

"Need you," she managed to gasp out as he pressed his hips tight against hers. Tomorrow they would have to face the same risks again but for now they were safe and that was all that mattered.
