Crikey, Steve Irwin died! I learnt of his death at lunch and the entire day has just been shite afterwards.
Not that it was really doing to well in the first place, actually, as I have a cold and my head feels like exploding and I’ve slept a total of about fourteen hours in the past twenty-four hours, but still, I am depressed.
I remember Kaileen regaling me tales of skipping class in high school just so she could go watch the Crocodile Hunter on television with her friends. Being without cable, we couldn’t watch it at our house, so I used to watch it whenever I went to my Aunt Lorraine’s and other random family members’ houses. I used to adore that show.
Stingray kills 'Crocodile Hunter'
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.
Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called Ocean's Deadliest when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.
"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.
Crewmembers aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said.
