quick question for you chemists

the plant is looking at performing its own COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) testing in-house, and I saw that I need a blender for homogenizing the sample?!

I was looking through a catalog and saw that prices range from $127 to several thousand for a freakin blender. Do I really need a special blender to perform ( Read more... )

Walmart FTW. What is the sample you need to homogenize? They just want to make sure that you don't have chunks of whatever in your sample, and that the sample's contents are the same throughout.

ahhhhh okay, i gotcha, that makes perfect sense! We're just homogenizing raw wastewater for the sampling. So yeaaahhhh. Now I can understand why it needs to be homogenized. Details end here. Sometimes, my job rules and is extremely disgusting at the same time. lol

Haha eff the catalog then, I'm working under a budget dangit. Thanks!!! :D

not exactly positive, but basically... homogenization is to make something have the same composition throughout the sample. i would say it might be best to go with one in the catalogue, just because the blenders in the catalogue are likely specifically made for homogenization while home-blenders are for mixing/chopping/etc and not necessarily getting a completely homogenous sample...

i dunno, though, honestly. haven't done much with like industrial... chemistry... stuff. next semester i might have a better idea cuz i'm taking a dairy processing class and we're gonna learn ALL about homogenization i bet haha.

Yeah now I got a perfect understanding of what it is now. :) Haha, makes me understand "homogenized milk" a lot more.

And I was wondering if I should order from the catalog or not, because the blenders they had in the catalog were the same brands you could buy in the store. And on top of that, I'm already spending roughly $1,200 on chemical reagents and reactors and the sort, and I only have about $1,350 left in my lab expense budget haha. Sooo yeah I'm trying to save a buck here :) thanks for the help though!! WALMART FTW!!!!!!
