Damn, so much has happened since I updated last. Where to begin...
WORK...One morning, a few days after my last post (ages ago it seems, they're so far between now) the production manager where I work approached me to discuss the possibility of a promotion in the near future. I stated that I'd be up for it, but not yet, since I still had a lot to learn about the run of the shop. His reply was that he was looking to make it happen in the next four or five months, which seemed a perfect timeline. I've been aiming for a promotion since I got there. Right away I saw how overextended and frazzled my supervisor is, and positioned myself to be a natural fit to lighten his load and take home a fatter paycheck to boot. Everybody wins.
The very next week, my supervisor's son falls ill with pneumonia, or something around that severity. See, his son is 12, and brain damaged. Six years ago, he nearly drowned, and his brain was without oxygen just a tad too long. Part of what's gone on since then is that since then he's been kept going by a pump of sorts...I don't know the particulars aside from said pump having a designed five year lifespan, and a risky operation being necessary to intall a new one. So, my supervisor has been away from work for the past three weeks (or so it seems....i've stopped keeping track) to be at the hospital with his son. Something tells me that North Texas will have its very own answer to Terri Schiavo soon enough.
With a rash of injuries and illness befalling the shop, and on top of that the fact that the company is pushing more orders than usual, the company is shorthanded and overbooked, in the midst of some growing pains. The next most familiar with the run of our corner of the shop is me. And so, circumstance thrusted me into the role which I clearly stated I'm not yet ready for...
...to be continued...
