haehyukfictrade It is yet another pain-filled day for Eunhyuk. Sitting far by the corner of the library beneath the cherry blossom tree, he continues to observe one particular pair in a field full of chattering students. Lee Donghae, fellow dancer and playboy extraordinaire, has once again another girl underneath his arm as he converses with the students surrounding him.
He isn’t sure how many girls did that make (after all, the other changes girls as much as he changes clothes) but every time he sees Donghae lingering close to someone, he just wishes it’d be him instead. So it only goes to say that Fate likes to make him suffer.
A small sigh leaves Eunhyuk’s lips as he plays with his half-eaten sandwich, pulling out pieces of bread and rolling them into tiny balls before tossing them for the birds to eat.
“There you are. I’ve been looking for you.”
He raises his head up and finds his best friend standing in front of him, looking rather concerned for him. And judging from the bag of sandwich and carton of apple juice in one hand, he can deduce that the other hasn’t had lunch yet either. “Sungmin.” He greets after a short moment of silence before he turns back to his lunch. “I just needed some space. I didn’t mean to make you worry.”
He hears a long sigh before the other decides to sit beside him. “Teukie-hyung sent me because he thought you’ve been kidnapped by players…or something.” He speaks up, particularly emphasizing on the word as his eyes take a glance over Donghae’s way.
Eunhyuk can’t help but to give a slight snort, not bothering to look up. “You know that won’t happen. Hyung’s exaggerating himself.”
Sungmin turns to face the crimson-haired boy, his eyes suddenly shows pity. He knew of Eunhyuk’s infatuation with the brunette from the very beginning but he still can’t understand what’s so special about the guy aside from his appearance. And not to mention, the boy is as straight as a sturdy arrow. There’s no way to bend that guy. “I still don’t understand why do you like such a person. Hell, I still want to beat him up for rejecting you not once, but twice! And that second time, he rejected you in front of the entire class!”
The younger suddenly winces as the memory of that time floods into his mind.
”What? You want to tell me you like me again?” Donghae said aloud, looking incredulous. It was the end of their final class before their school year was over and Eunhyuk wanted to confess to the boy on the roof. But as the students took their leave, the other assumed as such and raised his voice for everyone to hear.
Eunhyuk watched in horror as everyone stopped in their tracks to speculate. Some even began to whisper to each other and pointed at him in disgust. His eyes then shifted toward Donghae, whose lips widened into a smirk.
“I told you before that I’ve no interest in you…so I prefer you not to bother me in the future, okay?” The smirk transforms into a fake-looking apologetic smile. Suddenly, he looked thoughtful. “Ahh, right. We’re in the same dance team too…hm, well, much appreciated if don’t bother me there either.” A few classmates laughed and jeered while others shook their head and looking the other way.
The red-haired male couldn’t handle being in such a situation and so, he upped and ran away from the room with tears gathering around his eyes.
He still feels like crying since that day. It just hurts when all Donghae does is mocks him and make him feel more inferior than he already is.
Suddenly, an arm loops loosely around Eunhyuk’s shoulders as they pull him to rest his head against the owner’s own shoulder. “…I’m sorry, Hyukkie. For mentioning that.” Sungmin whispers guiltily, rubbing the younger’s arm in a comforting way.
The boy simply shakes his head. “It’s fine. That was months ago anyway.” He lets out a feeble laugh before he shifts a little to rub his eyes with the palm of his hand. “I feel really tired, hyung. I don’t know why.”
Sungmin looks concerned. “Did you get enough rest?”
“Mm-hm…I did.” Eunhyuk nods. “And for some reason, my right ankle swelled up over the past few days. It’s strange.”
“Maybe you should go see a doctor, Hyukkie.”
The younger nods again before letting out an inaudible yawn. Sungmin pats his head and mutters, “Go to sleep. I’ll wake you up when it’s time to leave.”
Eunhyuk gives a slight nod and closes his eyes. Within a few minutes, he drifts off to sleep.
After his conversation with Sungmin, everything seems to blur through Eunhyuk’s eyes. He vaguely recalls dragging himself after the brunette to class, followed by an appearance of Kyuhyun, Sungmin’s boyfriend of two months.
And before he knows it, he’s standing right by the school entrance, face to face with none other than Donghae. Eunhyuk glances around with a puzzled look on his face. How did he manage to get here?
“Hey.”
The red-head snaps his attention back to Donghae, who’s frowning at him. “Y-Yes?” He stutters, uncertain of what to say.
“Didn’t the last two attempts teach you anything? I told you not to bother me anymore.” He tilts his head back, his frown shifts to one of mild disgust. “Surely you have boy toys to play with.”
Horrified, Eunhyuk gives a frantic shake of the head. “N-No! I don’t-“
The other lets out a chuckle and sneers, “Please. I don’t need excuses.” He turns around and just before he leaves, he twists his head a little and spat, “So stop being such a bitch and leave me alone.”
And with that, he’s gone, leaving the boy with something more than a broken heart. Eunhyuk stands there, one hand clutched over his chest and tears freely gliding down his pale cheeks. Eventually, he lets out a choked sob and stumbles on home in the opposite direction.
It hurts. Oh god, it hurts. Eunhyuk squeezes the tears out of his eyes tightly as he fisted his shirt. He doesn’t expect seeing Donghae rejecting him again. And this time, it’s much more painful than before. His breath is coming short but he doesn’t take note of it as the only thought in his mind is Donghae’s expression of disgust. The brunette is disgusted of him. What did he do to deserve such treatment?
He doesn’t know how he manages and how long has it taken him, but he’s able to get home without much difficulty. As he enters the house, he hears his mother calling him from the next room. “Eunhyuk ah? Is that you?”
Eunhyuk gives a short sniff and before he can say a word in response, his body shuts down. Darkness engulfs his consciousness and he knows no more.
--
“…ah…”
“Eun...ah…”
“Eunhyuk ah!”
The boy lets out a feeble groan as he shifts around a bit and cracks his eyes open slowly. The bright light of the ceiling stings but as he blinks several times, he is able to adjust.
“Eunhyuk ah! You’re awake!”
Eunhyuk glances around to find his mother, father, and sister hovering over him in worry and relief. He blinks once more, his eyebrows knitted into a small frown. “Umma…Appa, Noona,…what…happened?” he inquires softly, his voice sounds oddly raspy to his ears.
His sister, Sora, is the first to explain. “You fainted near the front door. Umma was the first to find you and…well, we’re in the hospital at the moment.”
“The hospital?”
His mother suddenly sobs as she gives her younger child a tight hug. “My poor baby!”
Eunhyuk, not knowing what else to do, returns the hug and reassures her, “I’m fine, Umma.”
However, this only causes her to cry louder. The boy is taken aback by the reaction as he turns to his father and sister for an explanation. His eyes grow wide when he finds the two with tears in their eyes.
The door soon flies open and a middle-aged man steps into the room, followed by a young nurse holding a clipboard. “Ah, I see you’re awake, Lee-shii.” He greets pleasantly as he strides to the bed. “How are you feeling?”
“A…little hard to breathe…and no, it’s not my mom.” He quickly explains as his mother pulls back and begins to fuss over him. He clears his throat. “…otherwise, I’m fine.”
The doctor nods his head before exhaling with a slightly grim look on his face. “So far that’s good. Unfortunately, I bear bad news, Lee-shii. We’ve done several diagnosis and we found that you have Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare case of heart tumor.”
Eunhyuk’s face fell in shock. “What…?”
“Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant type of cancer that forms in the soft tissues within the striated muscles. And due to that, it can appear anywhere in the body. In most cases, the cancer appears in younger children around the age of four. While there are those your age contracted the disease, the percentage is low.” The doctor explains. “We managed to locate the cancer behind your left thigh.”
“So what will happen, doctor? Can it be remove?” Eunhyuk’s father asks, looking a bit hopeful.
The doctor shakes his head sadly. “Unfortunately, we found it too late. It appears that the cancer had remained dormant most of his life until a few months recently. It’s now acting up too fast.”
“Will…will my brother…live?” Sora inquires with teary eyes.
The man glances over to her, his lips stretches in a grim line. “Sadly to say, he only has two months to live.”
Sora lets out a loud gasp while the mother wails and embraces her son once more. The father looks as if he wants to punch the wall in anger, his breathing somewhat shaky.
And as he blankly stares on, he could only think of one thing:
I’m going to die.
--
The day Sungmin and Kyuhyun goes to visit Eunhyuk is nearly two days after the younger male found out about his illness. To say that he is angry and hurt is a little bit of an understatement.
“Why didn’t you tell me of this sooner, Hyuk? Why?!” Sungmin cries out the moment he steps into Eunhyuk’s hospital room. The other, skimming through a fashion magazine at the moment, snaps his head up with wide eyes. Before he can utter a response, Sungmin storms toward him and grabs him by the collar. At that point, Eunhyuk can clearly see the hurt, concern, and puzzlement that show through his narrowed eyes. He then shifts his eyes to the younger brunette. Kyuhyun doesn’t usually reveal his emotions often but at that moment, he sees as much emotion as Sungmin’s. He shifts his attention back to his best friend.
“…Minnie.” He whispers, barely audible enough to be heard.
Sungmin’s eyes narrow even more as they begin to gather tears. Eventually, after a long while of staring at each other, he relinquishes his hold on Eunhyuk and wraps his arms into a tight hug before breaking down.
“Why?...Why does it have to be you, Hyuk?” Sungmin mutters against his ear, his voice cracked and heavy with emotion.
The red-haired male, after a few seconds, tilts his head slightly toward his best friend and returns the hug gently. “Maybe I’m just unlucky.” He replies, patting his back in a reassuring manner.
The older gives a light snort of disbelief. “Good grades, a loving family, caring friends…who says otherwise?”
Eunhyuk stays silent.
“Hyuk…”
“You can’t say anything when it comes to relationships.” Sungmin’s grip tightens around him as he mumbles with eyes fluttered shut. “Donghae will never…be mine. He’ll probably be happy when I die.”
As soon as he finishes, Sungmin abruptly pulls him away at arm’s length and gives him a hard stare. “Don’t you dare say something like that, Lee Eunhyuk! Donghae is nothing more than a pompous asshole and I know you deserve more than the likes of him!”
Slowly, Eunhyuk glances away as Kyuhyun steps into room and asks softly, “…Just why do you like him, hyung?”
The red-haired male turns to him in response. For a long moment, there is only silence between them. Then, Eunhyuk speaks.
“I once saw past his mask- the flirty, playboy façade…” He clears his throat a little. “At first, I thought the same way Minnie have, that he was an obnoxious jerk who had no standards. However, by chance, I found him to be someone I never knew he could be. So…that’s how it is.” He finishes quietly.
“Hyuk…” Sungmin pulls him into a light hug.
“Min…Kyu…?”
“Yeah?”
“Would it be alright…if I try again?”
Sungmin glances over from Eunhyuk to Kyuhyun, looking worried. “Why?”
“Just…to let him know, even if he does hate me. I already have something in mind for it- I plan to send gifts to him for three days and on the third day, I’ll leave a note to him.” Eunhyuk whispers, pulling away to give him a weak smile.
Sungmin glances at him with uncertainty. “…You sure that’ll work?”
The other nods his head. “I know what kind of gifts he likes so it’s going to be easy. The only hard part is figuring out how to send them to him.” The red-head hums in thought before an idea strikes him. “Hey…maybe you can help me with that?”
“What? I don’t know…” The older crosses his arms, looking reluctant.
“Min…”
“…Yeah, Hyukkie?”
"You'll help me...won't you, Minnie?" Eunhyuk asks, voice soft and lips stretches into a sad smile. Sungmin's heart throbs painfully at the sight of him. He doesn't know how to say no when the other makes that kind of face; however, before he could say a word, Kyuhyun intercepts as he pauses his game. "He'll do it. I'll even volunteer to help out."
Sungmin and Eunhyuk turns their head to him, surprised by the offer from the usually laidback gamer. The youngest of the three stares back with a puzzled frown gracing his features. "What? Did I say something wrong?"
"...No. We're just surprised you offered to help." Eunhyuk speaks up, gesturing to the both of them.
Kyuhyun shrugs his shoulders. "I feel like it, I guess."
The oldest studies his lover for a moment before a smile reaches his lips. "Kyu, you're so..."
"Cool? Manly? Devilishly handsome?" Kyuhyun supplies questioningly with a raised eyebrow.
“Cute!” Sungmin exclaims as he proceeds to pinch the tall boy’s cheeks.
“Hey, stop that, Min! That hurts!”
--
Over a month and a half later…
“Shit, I’m late! Kyuhyun’s going to kill me!”
After waking up not fifteen minutes ago, Donghae knows the brunette’s going to say something harsh to him. He just knows it! As he runs by, he’s suddenly stopped by a bright voice calling him.
“Why, hello, sir! You happened to be our 10,000 visitor, congratulations! In commemoration to this, please accept this as a token of our appreciation!”
Donghae, who is taken aback by this bubbly young woman standing in front of his favorite music store, stares at her with wide eyes. What…just happened?
The person before him then waves a hand over his face once she realizes that he’s struck dumb. “Sir?”
He snaps back into reality and abruptly composes himself before offering a smile. “Ahh, so I won something?”
“That’s right! Here you go!” She passes him a small package wrapped in sea green paper and a gold ribbon before she bows and disappears into the building. Looking disbelieved, Donghae stares after the girl, mumbling his thanks shortly after she’s gone before focusing onto the gift in his hand. Judging by the size and weight, he guesses to be a CD. Slowly, he pries it open and his eyes grow wide with surprise.
“Oh my god, this is DBSK’s newest album! It’s not supposed to be out for another week...!” He studied it with awe, checking the front and back covers to see if it’s a bootleg or something. As he continues to observe the CD, he is interrupted by a soft cough and a light tap of the shoulder, “Um…excuse me?”
Donghae turns around to find a dark-haired girl around middle school age. She looks up at him with hesitance and uncertainty, her arms encasing a large orange stuffed fish. He gives her a gentle smile and asks, “Yes?”
Looking slightly taken aback, she shyly shifts her glance away for a moment and asks, “Can you…hold this? My shoe is untied.”
“Oh…sure.” She nods once and passes the bear to Donghae. Just when he expects her to bend down to tie her shoe, she ends up running away. He gapes at her and extends his arm toward the retreating figure. “W-Wait!”
When she disappears, he heaves a sigh. “What a weird girl.” He comments to himself before taking a glance at the fish in his arm. “At least this is cute…might as well take it home.”
Just as he’s about to take a step toward the opposite direction, he slaps a palm to his forehead. He nearly forgot about his meet up with Kyuhyun.
--
On his way to his designation, Donghae is not sure whether it’s just coincidence or it’s his extremely lucky day. Within a span of ten minutes, he has gotten hold of a brand new game- courtesy of a luck draw, a set of headphones- from a young man who nearly spilled coffee at him, and…a bag of two goldfish- an anonymous gift, apparently.
As much as he’s enjoying the freebies, there’s still something nagging him deep within his mind and it’s focusing on a certain red-haired being with a bright gummy smile. He is getting frustrated by it! Ever since the other disappeared from the face of the planet, he can’t stop wondering where the hell he is. He doesn’t even partake in dance anymore and he’s one of the best in the team!
He shakes his head. Should he be happy Eunhyuk is gone from his life?
“Yes, I’m happy…I’m happy he’s gone.” He mutters to himself, as if testing the words out. Then, he frowns.
It just doesn’t sound right.
“Hey! You’re late.”
Donghae’s head snaps up to find Kyuhyun standing by a large tree nearby, a game console in his hand as usual. “Ah, sorry! I was…busy.” He raises the gifts in his arms a bit with a small chuckle. Kyuhyun raises an eyebrow, unimpressed. “Where’d you get those?”
“I won them.” Was the reply.
“Uh huh.” The younger doesn’t seem to believe him but he just went with what Donghae says. “And I say, because you’re three minutes late, you owe me a new game.”
“What?! How can I owe you a game when I’m not really that late?”
“It’s because I say so.” Kyuhyun smirks as he strides off. Grumbling under his breath, Donghae hurries to follow him and decides to change the subject. “So why did you want to meet me, Kyu?”
The other stops in his tracks. “Ah, right.” He then turns around to face the older boy, his expression suddenly hardens. Donghae is taken aback by this.
“I just want to know…” Kyuhyun begins lowly. “that if you seen Eunhyuk once more, what will you do?”
The brunette sputters coherently before he glances around, unable to look at the boy any longer. “Wha-what are you talking about, Kyu? You know I wouldn’t want to come close to him. I don’t even like him.”
Kyuhyun’s stare is so hard, he can feel it even without looking back. Why is he asking such a question anyway? What does this got to do with him?
He hears the other take a deep breath. “Donghae-hyung.” Kyuhyun speaks up quietly. “I will say this to you: if you break his heart once more, I will make sure you will never see the light of day again.” And with that, he strides off, leaving the older confused and a little frightened.
--
What a day. Donghae stretches his arms up as he walks around his room. The pale gray clouds grew into a heavy storm and within minutes, heavy rain was pouring. Thankfully, he managed to reach home before that happened.
With a small smile playing on his lips he steps in front of the window, catching the slight sight of rain against the darkness. As he glances down, his jaw suddenly drops.
There, standing right outside his home, is Eunhyuk. He’s dressed in light sweatpants and a grey sweater. Donghae can’t help but to think that the boy will get sweep away by the harsh wind, thin and frail as he is.
‘What is he doing here? It’s raining, for god’s sake! He’ll get sick!’ Donghae’s mind went into panic mode and just when he’s about to get up and leave the house to reprimand the boy, he halts in his step when he notices a bundle of roses in Eunhyuk’s hand. “Wha…”
He watches as the other raises the bouquet to his face; apparently- in Donghae’s eyes-, he’s sniffing them. Is he…is he the one who brought me those gifts? After what I’ve done, he still… His mind trails off as he mouths to himself, loves me? His hand flies up to his chest, where his beating heart is located. He can’t believe it. Why would Eunhyuk still love him when all he did was hurt him? He hurt him! It just doesn’t make any sense.
After one long minute, Eunhyuk then strides to the front door and gently places the bouquet down. And without a moment longer, he walks off, staggering somewhat on every occasional step.
It isn’t until the moment the boy is out of sight is when Donghae decides to leave for the door. Once there, he flips the lights on and takes a short glance at the knob before he reaches out and slowly pulls the door open. There, heavily sprinkled in rain water, lies the beautiful bouquet of red roses.
He picks it up with a small grimace spreading across his face.
To think it’s Eunhyuk after all these times…
He heaves a sigh. It is then that he notices a white card hidden within the bouquet. Slowly, he pulls it out and as he places the flowers down, he rips it open. It’s a blank white card; when he opens it, however, he sees Eunhyuk’s neat writing.
Donghae, I know you said never to bother you again but I just want to express my feelings to you one last time. I confess, it’s hard to say after getting rejected three times but I’ve never given up to you. You are the one person I respect, the one who I share the love of dancing with, and the only person who has a special place in my heart. I know you don’t like me- you may even hate me for it but…this is my last chance to say I like you. And with this, I don’t regret saying it. I love you, Lee Donghae. Goodbye.
Lee Eunhyuk
--
The next day, Donghae decides to confront Sungmin, who he knows he should have contact with Eunhyuk. He had called the boy to meet up with him in one of the empty classrooms during lunch and now, they are standing there face to face.
“I’m here so what do you want?” Sungmin demands with a slight growl. “I have better things to do than to stand here watching you.”
The younger grimaces for a bit before he slowly asks, “I want to ask you a question and I hope you can answer me.”
Silence.
“Where…is Eunhyuk?”
“Why do you care?”
“I…”
“I refuse to tell you anything about him. You broke his heart.”
Donghae’s eyebrows furrows together. “I want to-“
He stops when he hears an unfamiliar ringtone ring through the air. He watches as Sungmin pulls out his phone and answers the call. It isn’t long before a look of horror graces his face.
“What? You’re lying!” Sungmin suddenly shouts against the receiver, his eyes filled with tears. “You’re lying! He-He can’t…be…”
Donghae feels his heart stop. He can’t say why but he can’t guess who the other is talking about. And just before the other ends the call to charge out of the room, he grabs the boy’s shoulder and shouts, “Who? Is it Eunhyuk?”
The older glares at him through his tears. “Why the hell do you want to know? It’s none of your business!”
Returning the glare- albeit more out of pain than anger-, Donghae clenches his teeth shut and tightens his hold, “…I know.” He begins softly before he raises his voice, “I know it’s none of my damn business! And I know I’ve been nothing but an ass to you but…shit. You don’t know how much I regret saying those things to him.”
He looks up through his bangs; Sungmin’s glare lessens considerably until it becomes a deep frown.
Does he really think that saying those words to him will erase everything that he had done to Eunhyuk? The red-head would’ve forgiven him but not Sungmin. He’s going to protect the boy from the likes of him.
“I’m leaving.” Sungmin shrugs Donghae’s loosened grip, wipes his eyes with the hem of his sleeve, and turns for the door.
“W-Wait! Please! I-I really want to see him.”
Stopping a foot away from the door, the older stands there for a few seconds before turning back into the room with a blank face. Donghae is on his knees as he returns the stare with his own pitiful one. He looks truly sorry; it makes him wonder if he really did regret his actions all those months ago. Eunhyuk is a fragile person and for Donghae to harm him- be it verbally, physically, or mentally-, it just brings his blood to a boil. He’s not sure whether to forgive him for what he’s done.
However…those months where Eunhyuk planned to have the boy fall for him, it actually made him feel better because it was those times where his best friend could forget that he was dying. It made him hopeful.
And he knows that one of the boy’s wishes…is to see Donghae, to see if the other fell in love with him like he says he would.
He turns for the door once again. He hears Donghae’s breath hitch and he knows that he will once again speak up to beg. “…Follow me before I ditch you.” He ends up saying and with that, he hurries out of the room, not caring if the other does follow him or not.
All he cares about at that moment is his best friend.
--
An hour prior…
It hurts. It’s the only words that resound in his mind when Eunhyuk came to. He cracks an eye open, only to shut it tightly when it is met with blindingly bright light. Groaning softly to himself, he tries again, this time a little more slowly.
As his vision clears, he takes a glance around. Judging from the sun out, he assumes it to be around noon. He can’t seem to remember anything the night before except for the fact that he had blacked out as soon as he reached home.
Home. He blinks upon realization, taking in the room once more. It’s the hospital, he soon realizes.
Does this mean what he thinks it mean?
“Ah…so the end is almost here…” He whispers to himself with a bitter smile gracing his lips. Despite the fact that he didn’t fully succeed in making Donghae fall for him, he is, at least, happy to know that he gave his last words to him last night. He doesn’t have any regrets in that.
And then there is pain.
--
Sungmin, along with Donghae and Kyuhyun, runs straight into the hospital. The oldest manages to bump into his lover by chance and immediately drags him away. And never mind the fact that they left the school midday. Eunhyuk is more important.
“Hey, no running in the hospital!” The woman behind the reception desk screeches out but the three paid no mind to her.
Upon reaching Eunhyuk’s room, they find a small group of doctors stepping out of the male’s room. Sungmin is the first to reach them, eyes filled with unshed tears. “Did…Did Eunhyuk…?”
“We’re sorry.” One of them says solemnly, giving him a pat on the shoulder as he strides past.
“No…” Donghae hurries into the room as Kyuhyun went to comfort the sobbing male. He finds Eunhyuk lying on the bed, looking quite peaceful as if he’s in slumber. Slowly, he heads over to him, his steps dragging heavily as he focuses on the boy. Then, he stops in front of the bed. Grabbing hold of one of Eunhyuk’s hands, he mutters, “I’m sorry, Eunhyuk. I’m so…sorry.”
“…Dong…hae…?”
Donghae lets out a gasp when Eunhyuk cracks an eye a little and smiles weakly. Immediately, he crouches down and grasps the other’s hand tightly into his own. “Eun-Eunhyuk! You’re still alive!” He whispers, as his eyes stings with oncoming tears. Yes! Now he can tell him how he feels.
However, Eunhyuk gives a slow shake of the head. “No…I’ll be gone soon…”
Blinking repeatedly as tears now glides down his cheeks, he shakes his own head. “No, you’ll be fine! As long as you’re still here, you can still live!”
The red-head’s lips twitches up as he closes his teary eyes. Then, he mouthed, “I’m sorry…”
Donghae leans closer and opens his mouth for two seconds before he says, “I…I love you too, Eunhyuk.”
Eunhyuk’s smile widens at this and as soon as it did, it falls back and he smiles no more. The brunette lets out a choked sob. The boy who finally wins his heart is gone.
Gone forever.
End.
A/N: I know. It's weird and it doesn't make sense ._.
Also, this story was supposed to be longer, considering that I had the gift passing extending to several days. In the end, it came out as a one day session -shrugs-
And...not to be a lazy bum but I did try to post this sooner ;_;
