I want to live where soul meets body
And let the sun wrap its arms around me
And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel, feel what its like to be new

They were all falling into old patterns. Tina stuttered. Artie was depressed. Mike had stopped speaking altogether. Rachel was on the verge of screaming in every conversation just to be heard. Burt’s credit cards were nearly maxed out from Kurt’s online shopping. Mercedes wore brighter colors and gestured constantly. Finn was hiding behind his football jersey. Puck began to bully the other Glee members again. Santana’s hands were almost permanently stained from throwing so many slushies. Brittany’s IQ seemed to have dropped significantly, almost as if she was never really present at all.
Quinn had become numb, so numb she was starting to think her eyes were no longer connected to her brain. Only disjointed images filtering through her consciousness that never touched her emotionally. A freshman was slushied, bright red contrasting with her beige dress. A bunch of bulky football players carrying a smaller boy out of the building, the boy thrashing around as hard as he could.
Tied to her duty as head cheerleader, to her reputation, Quinn was stuck in place. She could not be happy like this. She did not feel anything. Something was slowly snapping inside her. Something needed to change, if not those around her then she was going to have to change herself.
She needed something new. She needed to be free.
A large purple slushy hit Rachel Berry square in the face courtesy of some new cheerleaders who traveled in small packs, still not confident enough to do it on their own. Quinn watched as the brunette spun on heal towards the bathroom without even acknowledging what just happened.
Quinn felt the tugging, the need for change. Curious at her reaction at having seen her fellow Glee member slushied she followed Rachel into the bathroom.
It all seemed so mundane, Rachel sticky and dripping purple liquid on the slightly discolored sink. She had seen it dozens of times. She had caused it at least a dozen times.
Why should she feel something now of all times? Why Rachel?
It was always Rachel though, wasn’t it? She had always been drawn in by the exuberant personality, the unflinching smile in the face of adversity, and the forgiving hope in Rachel’s sweet brown eyes. Yes, it had always been Rachel.
Face still wet from having been cleaned with cool water, Rachel made eye contact in the mirror with Quinn. A questioning glance, a raised eyebrow was all it took for Quinn to snap.
So simple, so soft, so refreshing was their first kiss that neither of them moved. They just stood in place and let the world change.
