➜ Summary: Sungyeol drops a sketch and in his effort to return it, Yesung finds a friend.
Checking for the last time to see that he wasn’t forgetting a few pencils Sungyeol made his way towards the door of his room. He took his sketchbook and his pencils in one hand and tried to keep all his sketches from falling out as he opened his door towards the hallway of the fourth floor. It had been a while since he had taken this way out of his room because he usually used his window… but right now he was taking too many stuff with him for his raven form to handle, so he had decided to just go through the front door. He didn’t quite liked it and he sure hoped that no one was in the living room he thought, as he quickly began to make his way downstairs while hoping that he wouldn’t bump into someone.
Once he got downstairs he sighed in relief that he didn’t meet anyone on the stairways and quickly began to make his way towards the front door, without looking towards the living room once because he was afraid that he would make eye contact with someone there if he did. Once he got at the door he quickly slipped through the doorway and sighed once he got outside… happy that he managed to get outside but unaware of the fact that he had dropped one of his sketches while making his sneaky escape as he kept walking towards his usual spot.
Yesung, on his way home from his voice class, was humming contentedly to himself as he walked. Every now and again he would nod to someone along the way in greeting but he stopped to talk to none. As he neared the Exile house, he noticed a fellow student he had seen a few times, and talked to less, walking the other way. He said nothing as the young man passed, offering a polite nod that very likely went unnoticed. Beyond the young man a piece of paper fluttered to the ground and Yesung bent and snatched it before the wind could. He turned it over, inspecting the surface of it and noted the decently skilled sketch there. It looked like something he would be sad to misplace and he couldn't see its artist being too thrilled about losing it either. "Excuse me!" he called, turning to chase after the young man who had just passed sketch in hand.
Sungyeol didn’t even notice that someone had passed him on his way out as he was softly humming to himself as he made his way towards the forest area of the school. He raised his eyebrow for a moment when he heard someone call out… was he trying to get his attention? He then thought, making Sungyeol swallow for a moment as he was actually too shy to look around to see if that was really the case. Instead, he actually quickened his pace a little as a reflex as he kept on walking towards the forest. It was not that he wanted to be unsocial or anything like that… he just… didn’t know how to react to a stranger. And this voice he most definitely didn’t remember. Maybe he was calling out to someone else?
Yesung noticed the young man quicken his pace and he frowned. He didn't really want to run after someone and possibly frighten him, but he really wanted to return the drawing to him. "Hey artist!" he called trying to get the young man's attention. "You dropped your drawing!"
Damn… he was talking to him… Sungyeol thought as he slowed down his pace again, while looking down to his sketchbook. Did he really drop one of his drawings? He then thought, as he sighed again before he stopped walking. He just had to face the other now because of the fact that he was indeed calling out for him. It made Sungyeol swallow again before he turned around to face the other… biting his lower lip because he kind of got nervous. “I… I did?” he then asked softly as he pushed his glasses back onto the bridge of his nose with his hand.
"You did," Yesung said with a smile, holding out the sketch. He could tell that the young man was nervous and he tried to smile as reassuringly as he could. "It's nice to return something I didn't summon for once."
Sungyeol looked at his sketch and took it while politely bowing towards the other. “Thank you…” he then said as he looked at the sketch that he had dropped. It was a sketch of all kinds of water birds and he was actually relieved that the other came to bring it back to him, because he needed this one for a project of his. It made him smile for a moment as he looked back at the stranger again. “A-ah… I see.” He then said as the other began to talk about summoning. Was he a summoner? He thought, without having the guts to actually ask the other as well…
Yesung laughed at himself. "I always just assume people won't get confused when I say that. My mutation is to summon things. Basically anything that I can think of I can make come to me. Handy when I want it to work not so much so when I don't." He had no problem about speaking about himself freely and he could tell the other man was curious at least a bit.
“I-I see.” Sungyeol answered as he was still stuttering a little because he still didn’t know how to act in front of this stranger. “That sure seems… cool.” He then said, as he smiled again a little at the other before looking towards the ground again. He wondered what he could summon… if he really could summon everything he wanted… then could he also summon like an elephant or a truck or something that big? He thought as he looked at his sketch again before putting it with the rest of his sketches… still unsure about what he should be saying or what he should ask.
He could help but smile at the young man. It was clear that he had little social skills and while that might offend some, Yesung found it slightly sweet. "My name is Jongwoon but people call me Yesung. So you're an artist?"
Sungyeol looked back up again at the person that called himself Yesung and nodded a little. “Ah… my name is Sungyeol.” He then said. “Just Sungyeol.” He then added because the other was using some sort of nickname. “And yes… well I am… not yet an artist. I am studying to become one.” He then said, again with a soft smile. “What… do you study?”
Yesung smiled encouragingly. Getting people to feel comfortable around him had always been one of his strong points, and something that his father had delighted in before his mutation appeared. "I'm studying music. Mostly vocal and composition," he answered.
“Ah... so that means that you can sing really well?” Sungyeol then asked as he was feeling a little bit comfortable with the other already, even if it was only a little. “Do you… wish to become a singer later on?” he then asked as he looked up for a moment towards the birds that were circling above him. He had heard them from the moment he left the house because they knew that around this time he would get out to sketch outside of the house. It made Sungyeol smile a little before looking back at the other again.
"Yeah I hope to," Yesung confirmed. Then he laughed, "Although if I get too into a song I might accidentally start summoning stuff onto stage. What do you plan to do?"
Sungyeol couldn’t help that he chuckled for a moment as he thought about the other summoning something like an elephant on stage. He could already see the faces of the audience. “I am sorry…” he then said, still half chuckling as he spoke. “I was just… imagining what it would be like if you… summoned something random on the stage.” He then continued as he tried to catch his breath again before answering to the other. “I… don’t know actually. I love to draw… so maybe I will become an… illustrator or something like that…” he then said as he got startled a little when a bird landed on his shoulder. Aish… he thought as he looked at the bird for a moment, who was looking back at him like it was asking when he was going to draw again. The other would probably find it kind of weird for birds to be this… attracted to him… he thought as he bit his lower lip for a moment. He had been called weird too often before because of this so he kind of was afraid of the other’s reaction.
Yesung thought the other young man looked so much better when laughing. "That would be cool. You could probably create a comic series about all the crazy things that happen here," he said with a grin. When the bird landed on Sungyeol's shoulder he grinned. The fact that a bird would feel comfortable landing on any human was pretty cool to him. "Awesome," Yesung muttered. "Could I touch it?"
Sungyeol had smiled again when the other talked to him about a comic. “That would be possible yes.” He then said, as he looked back from the bird to Yesung again. “I… don’t know if it would like that…” he said, as he noticed how the bird was following Yesung’s every move. It screeched a little when Yesung came to close to its comfort. “You… could try but I am not sure if it would like that…” he then said, as he was happy that the other wasn’t calling him a freak or anything.
Yesung pulled back his hand. He had never been attacked by a bird but he was pretty sure that it would be painful if it decided to do so. "It looks soft," he commented, tucking his hand in his pocket just so he wouldn't be tempted to touch it like he was with nearly everything else.
Sungyeol smiled again when he heard the other speak about the bird. “So… you are not finding this… freaky or… anything like it?” he then asked a little shyly again. He never knew how people would react to the fact that birds were comfortable with being around him… but the other seemed like he didn’t care all that much. He even seemed a little excited which made Sungyeol feel a little more comfortable about it again.
Yesung laughed, trying very hard to keep his hands to himself, a feat which was difficult to say the least for someone who loved touching things, especially when he was presented with soft feathers. "It can't be any freakier then summoning a turtle into your shower. One minute I'm shampooing my hair thinking about how cool having a turtle would be, and the next there is a turtle looking up at me."
Sungyeol couldn’t help but to chuckle because of the thought of the other showering with a turtle. “Oh god, that would be extremely awkward.” He then said, as he noticed that the bird was getting kind of annoyed by the fact that Sungyeol was ignoring him, making it fly away again. Sungyeol followed it with his eyes for a moment but looked back at the other again when the bird was out of sight. “So… you really like turtles then I presume?”
As he watched the bird fly away he felt a small twinge of guilt. It could have possibly been his fault that the creature had become irritated, but he was certain it would very likely be back at some point. "I do," Yesung confirmed. "They are really kinda cool. They look really strange on the outside, but they have some of the best protection in the world from anything that might want to hurt them. If anything threatens they just suck their body inside their shell and they are safe. I figure it must be really nice to do that."
Sungyeol nodded for a moment and thought about that. “I wonder how that would be like…” he then said, after which he looked back at the other again with a smile on his face. “Do you want me to show you a turtle?” he then said, still smiling as he put his sketchbook and his pencils on the ground. Sketching could wait… he kind of wanted to know how it was to be a turtle right now… and if he could do the other some kind of favor with it then it was all good right?
"Show me a turtle?" Yesung asked partially confused and partially eager. He had no real idea what Sungyeol was talking about but whatever it was seemed to make the other young man smile and that was more than enough for Yesung to agree to it. Disregarding, of course, that there was a turtle involved.
“Promise me that you won’t freak out, alright?” Sungyeol then said as he stretched his body for a moment before he closed his eyes again. He tried to picture himself a turtle in his mind, a land turtle that was because a sea turtle would be kind of… useless right now… he thought as he sighed for a moment before he began to concentrate himself on the features of a turtle, before he began to notice that he was slowly changing. He felt how his body shrunk slightly as he began to take on the features of a large sized land turtle and it didn’t take long before Sungyeol had completely changed into one, as he opened his eyes and blinked for a moment… before looking up at the other again.
"Freak out?" Yesung asked still confused. He was certain it would take a lot to make him freak out and whatever Sungyeol had planned probably wouldn't do it. Although, as he watched the young man's body began to change, he had to admit that was a bit disturbing at first. When he was finished a large turtle looked up at him and Yesung grinned. "Cool," he said, moving around and reaching out to touch the shell of the turtle before he could stop himself.
Sungyeol backed away a little when Yesung closed in to touch him, but when he noticed that he wanted to do no harm, Sungyeol let the other touch his shell. He wasn’t used in changing into a turtle so he had small difficulties of keeping his rationality as a human, but he thought that he was doing pretty well so far. He kept looking towards Yesung for a moment and then began to pull himself back into the shell, just because he had always wondered how it would be like to do so. It was kind of fascinating really… he thought once he managed to pull himself back completely. Though…. It was kind of dark…
His fingers ran over the shell, enjoying the bumps and curves of it. Once of his favorite things to do was care for his turtle's shell, the texture was so very unique. Then, grinning, Yesung squatted at the hole where Sungyeol's now turtle like head had disappeared into. "How it it in there?" he called out.
Sungyeol could hear Yesung’s voice from outside of his shell and thought that it would be time to get back out again. But darn… turtles were slow… he thought as he managed to stick his head and legs out again before looking back towards Yesung as he blinked again. Right he couldn’t really communicate with the other this way, so maybe it was time for him to change back again… he thought as he stepped back a little from the other, before he began to picture himself into his mind again, making him slowly change back into his human for again.
Yesung watched him change, grinning as the turtle receded and left a human in its wake. "That was really cool," he began before Sungyeol even had a chance to speak. "Can you change into anything? Because if you could that would be totally awesome. I mean you could find out what it is like to swim with fish, and fly, and live underground, and run really fast, and jump really high," he listed, and then paused to contemplate other things that animals could do.
Sungyeol couldn’t help but to chuckle a little as he heard the other list all kind of things animals could do. “Ah… yes… I can change into any animal I like.” He then said, smiling a little. “But so far I haven’t tried all that many different species… I like to try them all out though… but I kind of need people to suggest some animals… that’s why I wanted to change into a turtle when you began to speak about it.” He then continued, still smiling as he took his sketchbook and pencils from the ground again. “Oh and if you were still wondering… It’s very dark… but cozy inside a turtles shell.”
"Cool," Yesung murmured again. "Maybe you could buy a book full of animals and just go through the book becoming them. That would be really fun," he suggested. "Oh I wonder if things look differently from animals eyes instead of ours," Yesung knew he was rambling but he was so excited he was finding it hard to stop.
“That’s… a good idea.” Sungyeol then said as he frowned for a moment. “Why didn’t I think of that myself?” he then continued as he shook his head for a moment before looking back at the other again. “I will keep that in mind.” He then said, as he smiled again. “And… I can tell you that everything is different while being an animal… you kind of experience things way more intense than a human… like sounds and stuff. And some animals don’t see colors… like dogs. It’s all really interesting to experience that..." Sungyeol kept on talking and talking about his mutation without him noticing it that he wasn’t acting shy anymore. He just liked it a lot that someone was taking interest in what he could do. “But… I like to change into birds the most… that’s why they tend to flock around me… kind of.”
Yesung, tired of standing, simply plopped down on the ground absorbing everything Sungyeol was telling him. "Cool. So you have flown then? How was it? I've always wanted to fly and I've been on a plane but I bet it is nothing like being able to fly with your own wings."
Sungyeol sat down onto the ground as well when he noticed that Yesung was doing the same. He then smiled as the other asked him if he had flown before and simply nodded. “It’s a great experience to be honest…” he then said, still smiling a little as he looked to the ground again as he was hoping that he wasn’t making the other jealous or something of the sort. “It makes you feel like you are free from all kind of boundaries… well I feel about it that way..”
"Wow," Yesung breathed leaning back and looking up towards the sky. "That would be so cool. You are so lucky that you get to do that. Plus if birds like you, then you are never really alone either." As much as he enjoyed his own abilities at times, he was certain that having Sungyeol's would have been so much more enjoyable. He wasn't jealous, not really, simply certain that Sungyeol got the better end of the deal
Sungyeol smiled a little at the other’s comment and looked back towards the ground again, sighing. He sure liked it that birds liked to hang around him… but it made people think he was weird as well most of the time… and he didn’t wanted to be called weird all the time and just be able to interact with people more instead with animals… and he sure sucked at that. “I sure hope that… I didn’t made you… like jealous or anything?” he then shyly asked again as he looked back up towards Yesung. “I wish I could… let you experience the things I feel when I morph… but I can’t think of a way how.”
Yesung was startled at the other young man's question. "You didn't make me jealous," he assured him. "Your mutation is just so much cooler than mine," he said with a laugh. Then in answer to Sungyeol's statement which was sweet to say the least, "That would be awesome but I'm not sure there is a way to do that, that we would really want to try."
Sungyeol shook his head for a moment and smiled again. “I bet your mutation is awesome as well.” He then said, as he pushed his glasses back on this bridge of his nose again. “I wonder… if you could show me a little as well? If you are able to?” he then asked as he kept on smiling. “What level are you?”
Yesung laughed. "It's pretty awesome when it does what I want," he agreed. "I'm a gamma level but I can usually make it work when I want, I just can't make it not work when I don't want it to. What do you want me to summon?"
“Ah alright...” Sungyeol then said, smiling again reassuringly. “Ehm what do I want you to summon…” he then repeated. “You can summon everything you want right?” he then asked before he thought about it again. “Well… could you… perhaps summon me something to eat? I am… kind of hungry to be honest.” He then said as he felt his cheeks getting red slightly because of his stupid question.
"I think I can do that," Yesung said with a grin. He wasn't entirely sure what sort of food he wanted to summon, since he had no idea what Sungyeol would like to eat. There was a telltale hiss that always signaled his power had activated and a white thin box popped into existence just in front of them and fell the few inches to the grass. Well out of all of the foods he could have summoned he supposed it could have been worse. "Hope you like pizza," he said, leaning forward and pulling the box to them.
Sungyeol’s jaw dropped a little when he saw a box of pizza appear out of nowhere. “That’s… so cool!” he then said as he was checking if the box was real. He could smell the scent of pizza and it made him even hungrier than he had already been. “This can come in handy at like… almost every time right? You like just have to think about it and it will appear…” Sungyeol said, still amazed by the other’s mutation. “Waaah…”
Yesung laughed. "Yeah pretty much," he flipped open the box and grabbed a slice of the pizza. If it was here he might as well eat it. "The problem is, everything has to come from somewhere, I don't create it, I call it to me. I end up accidentally taking a lot of stuff that belongs to other people. I try to give as much of it back as I can, and I'm getting better at summoning my own stuff," he explained.
“Oh…” Sungyeol then said as he was about to take a bite of the slice that he was holding. “So this pizza… probably belongs to someone else as well?” he then asked as he began to feel a bit guilty if he would eat of it. But he was so hungry… he then thought as he kept staring at the slice in his hand. One slice wouldn’t hurt right?
Yesung nodded and then shrugged. "It belongs to someone else, probably on this campus. I don't think my range works much farther than that but I don't really know. It is sort of known that when things suddenly go missing, check with me cause I might have them. I'll just owe someone a pizza later," he said, then munched away happily on his own slice.
Sungyeol couldn’t help but to chuckle again when he saw the other eat of his slice. He then just nodded and took a bite of his own slice as well. “Hmmm… from whoever this pizza is… he or she sure has a good taste!” he then said, happy as well as he kept on eating of his slice as well until his was done. “Mind if I take another one?”
"Knock yourself out," Yesung said with a grin gesturing to the box. He wasn't that hungry and the pizza was large enough that they would both have plenty. He had never seen someone thrilled about his mutation. Most of the time, people came to him, irritated that he had taken something from them and demanding for it to be returned.
Sungyeol managed to eat another three slices before he was really stuffed. He didn’t seem like a person that would eat all that much because he was pretty skinny… and tall but he actually had a black hole for a stomach from time to time. He now sighed in content as he was stuffed and grinned for a moment. “That was really good… I wish I could summon a pizza from out of nowhere!”
Yesung laughed. "We are just lucky it came with a box and didn't splat all over the ground," he said rising to his feet. "I have to be going, I have class soon, but it was nice to meet you. We could hang out some time or something, maybe go through a bunch of animal forms together or try to summon the most random things we can think of?" he offered.
Sungyeol looked up at the other again as he got up, smiling again as he got up himself as well. “Sure… that would be great!” he then said, kind of excited as he brushed his jeans of slightly. “I would like that.” He then said as he grabbed his own stuff again as well, because he still had to go draw those sketches of those birds. “I am glad to have met you, Yesung-sshi.” As he bowed a little in front of him in politeness. “And… thanks a lot for that pizza… I am looking forward in practicing with you…”
"I'm glad to have met you too, Sungyeol-sshi" he said politely in return, bowing as well. "You're welcome and stop by any time." He really longed to stay longer and chat with Sungyeol but if he missed his next class he would probably be killed by his partner for his project, so with a little wave he turned and jogged off towards his house where he had originally been going to pick up the things he needed.
Sungyeol smiled at the other and thanked him for the offer. “Take care.” He then said as the other ran off again, smiling as he watched him leave. He then turned around again and began to walk towards his usual spot again, still smiling as the same bird came sitting on his shoulder again. Sungyeol looked back at the bird again as he kept on smiling. “Yeah yeah now I have time for you again… you jealous little bastard.” He said as he kept on smiling all the way as he kept on walking, glad that he finally had made a friend around here.
