I believe in sequels
my fellow marines call me "boot" ...it's not an affectionate nickname because of my last name, Botha, which, if you remove the "h" to give you bota, means "boots" in spanish..no, it's not because of that. rather it's a derogatory term used to somehow take away from all the hell I've gone through just to be one of them...just because I haven't seen combat, I don't deserve the same title...maybe they're right..I dunno. they've been through a hell I can only begin to imagine..they didn't all come back like they thought they would..in time I will earn my place...and the title all over again..like we all must do every day.
so today I ran..hmm..lets say about 10 miles or so on the beach. the scenery was beautiful..it had to have been to soothe the burning pain of acid running through your veins. lead by our platoon commander Lt.Wagner, a graduate of the naval academy, he is in one word (well, three really) 'one badass mofo'. he's a good leader, born to lead men in combat..it is something you can just feel, the transmitted electricity of someone that most everyone just gravitates towards..
..the rest of the day we just put together our new humvees just off the assembly line (hey, they were built by the lowest bidder, and the marine corps is cheap, so we gotta do most of the actual work ourseleves) it was fun, but kind of surreal too...we were like kids with new toys with matching expressions on our faces and exclamations of how cool they were..eagerly we all jumped at the opportunity to "play" with these new things...everyone clawed for a tool to put it together, even if it meant we got off 3 hours after we were supposed to..
now I have 2 days off till I have to be in the field for a whole week starting monday. I'm part of the support element to this Raid leaders course... which apparently is some course where they teach you how to lead raids..hmmm .. so thats just a fancy way of saying I'm part of the suckiest working party they have, where i'll be setting up targets and all that jazz for like a week , and I'll sleep outside in the cold and all that good stuff.. yay for me..
