"We're out to boggle some brains and try to give people an insight into what our dog thinks about when he is alone in our backyard," Hella guitarist, Spencer Seim, has been quoted saying, on his band's focus. Spencer Seim is only half of the Sacramento, Ca based due, Hella, that has been touted as a "tech/garage/indie-punk" band. Seim and chum, drummer, Zach Hill, founded Hella, after the demise of their fledgling effort, the doomed, Legs on Earth. The two sought out on a quest for new musical territory, playing shows around the greater Bay Area and Sacramento Valley. In the beginning the boys handed out self stapled, self-produced EP, "Leather Diamond," at their shows, which sold quickly.
The buzz surrounding Hella had began. Within the past twelve months, this innovative pair signed to KRS sister label 5RC, and released their debut album, "Hold Your Horse Is," to a receptive pool of reviewers. With their "melodic undercurrent" and moody, slap happy rhythm, Hella has been described, misleadingly, as "Primus on speed." 5RC has put it best with a warning they have sent out to those who wish to purchase, "Hold Your Horse Is," "Hella is not for everyone. This album will change the way you view music forever, so listen carefully." Hella is now finishing up their tour with the Locust, Arab on Radar, and Lightning Bolt. With hope to reenter the studio, later this year, it is safe to suggest that these guys are going to be around for a longtime to come.
