Thats really nice I didnt even know there was other schools around like that besides McKiver. When I worked at Gateway ( our class only went Tues. and Thurs. and only got to stay from 10:30 till about 11:45 ) and I enjoyed every minute of it.
But I will admit before I went to Gateway I was scared and didnt have any knowledge of those children. When our teacher was going by slecting rooms for each of us, I was tryin hard not to get picked. When I did, I didnt even want to go in. When I started out I was scared to pick up the children or even play with them because I was afriad I was going to hurt them.
But after all of that I got really attached to those kids. I never wanted to leave.
On my last day they gave me presents and all and I gave them mine. And my class had lunch at that time and they all wanted hugs and as I walked out of the cafeteria I had to pu my sunglasses on because I started crying, I tried really hard not to but it just didnt work.
Most of the kids in my class I dont think was that attached to their kids like I was. I know I just cant wait to go back. Sorry that im rambling on though lol.

Oh and what did you do at Gateway when you came to visit? And when did you visit? Because I was there sometimes when groups and people would come to visit.

Well the county I work for sponsored a "field trip" for all our our TMD (tranable mentally disabled) and SPMD (severe/profoundly mentally disabled) teachers. About 40 of us went around Septemeber or October. We just came to check out all the wonderful things we had heard. Gateway is the only school of its kind in NC. I teach at a regular elementary school. The way they do things is very different and it works so well. It allows the children to achieve so much. I do have to admit, the children I teach are higher functioning. Most likely they are the type of kids that you said were leaving the center. Are you a junior in school? I took a class like you are in when I was in HS and it helped me decide for sure that Special Ed. was my place. I have a sister who is handicapped that inspired me. I'm glad the angels at Gateway did the same for you!

I remember seeing alot of groups when I was there. If you can remember their all mixed up in diffrent oolored pods, I was in the blue. In blue, all of them was wheelchair bound I do believe. If you met any of the teachers I helped out Gloria in Blue 1.
Yes I was a junior. It was a class called Early Childhood Education 1 and 2. ECE 1 wen to a elementary school and I didnt like it one bit. All I got to do was grade papers and staple then when I went to ECE 2 I relized that I wanted to be a special ed. teacher. A couple of others in my class are also going back. I know I cant wait. Most of my class is leaving though to go to a normal elementary school, which is sad.
I never relized how attached you could get to hose kids in such a little time.
