Jongin met up with Sehun at their favorite ramen shop after school just like every Friday. They occupied the same table as always and ordered their favorite dishes.
“So, did you prepare anything for Kyungsoo?” Jongin frowned.
“Sehun, it’s August. His birthday isn’t until January.” Sehun shook his head. He had his mouth a little too full to speak and it took him some time until he could answer.
“I meant for when he’s leaving.”
“He didn’t mention he’d been going on vacation,” Jongin shrugged as he stuffed a big portion of noodles into his mouth.
“No, that’s not what I meant!” Sehun was visibly getting frustrated. “I’m talking about him leaving for another year. You know, to England.”
Jongin stopped in his actions and looked at Sehun blankly. “What?”
“He didn’t tell you about it?” Sehun asked incredulously. Jongin slowly shook his head as he mechanically put his chopsticks onto the table. He didn’t feel like eating anymore.
On his way home Jongin barely took notice of his surroundings as he mulled over what Sehun had told him. Would Kyungsoo really be leaving again? Off to London because his parents considered it a must for young people to spend as much time as possible abroad? Maybe Sehun had misunderstood something. No, that seemed unlikely. If he wasn’t a hundred percent sure he would have said so. Why hadn’t Kyungsoo told him anything then? Could it be that he simply didn’t want to put up with his whining? His behavior must have been really bothersome last time. Jongin’s heart ached as he let his mind replay the scenes from two years earlier.
He’d spent the last night before Kyungsoo’s departure over at his place. They hadn’t wasted much time sleeping and just laid curled up on the bed, uttering whatever thoughts filled their minds.
“It’s not forever,” Kyungsoo had said after they had silently stared at each other in the semidarkness for a seemingly endless moment. Jongin had known that, of course. But he’d still felt like crying.
Kyungsoo had kissed him goodbye. It had been gentle and ended just as unexpectedly as it had started; Jongin had still felt the other boy’s lips on his own long after he had left.
When he went over to the Do family’s house on the next day he’d made his decision.
“I want to be with you,” he said earnestly, not even giving Kyungsoo the chance to greet him properly. “I don’t care how far you go and it doesn’t matter if you leave for a year or a decade. It doesn’t change anything.”
“Jongin…”
“Will you accept my feelings?” he pleaded. “We can make it work somehow, I’m sure, I just-“
“Jongin,” Kyungsoo repeated more urgently. “I won’t be going anywhere. Not without you, at least.”
The younger man was clearly perplexed. “You won’t?”
Kyungsoo smiled at his friend’s dumbfounded expression and shook his head. “Not again.”
“But your parents, they-“
“Are not exactly happy about it but they finally accepted that I need to make my own decisions. I didn’t want to tell you anything about it until I had it all sorted out, I’m sorry.”
Jongin’s sudden embrace literally took Kyungsoo’s breath away.
“I’m so glad,” Jongin muttered. “Having to spend another year without you would’ve driven me insane.”
Kyungsoo closed his eyes and inhaled Jongin’s sweet scent.
“Me too,” he said quietly. “Don’t you dare to even think about abandoning me.”
Jongin chuckled lightly. “As if I’d ever go through with that.”
