DUDE THIS HURTS TO WRITE! IT BETTER NOT HAPPEN ON SUNDAY!
“The Packers are going to beat your asses today!” Mike cries in the car on the way to Solider Field. It’s a snowy Sunday afternoon and Lee’s favorite football team the Bears are playing Mike’s favorite team the Packers for the NFC championship.
“You’re so full of shit Mike. The Bears were born ready for this game. Get ready for Aaron Rodgers to break an arm or a leg or his whole body!” Lee says with a smile as they pull into the stadium parking lot.
“Whatever man. We should bet on this game.”
“Like you have any money to bet with….” Lee says sarcastically with a roll of his eyes.
“Hey, I have a job!” Mike says defensively as he punches his older brother in the shoulder.
“All the money you make from that piece of shit job goes to booze and pot. You really want to bet that money away?” Lee asks trying to keep a straight face.
“You’re right….I need that.” Mike’s quiet for a moment and Lee can tell there’s a plan forming in his head. “I got it.”
“Did you just lose a few brain cells coming out with a plan?”
“Shut up dude. For real. This is gonna be good.
Lee sighs and gives him a chance to talk. “Any day would be good. I have to sing the anthem in an hour.”
“Allison.” Mike says simply and shrugs his shoulder.
“As in my girlfriend?”
He nods his head. “If the Packers win I get to go on a date with her.”
Lee shakes his head. “No way in hell man. You’re not going on a date with my girlfriend.”
“What? You’ve only been dating for a week. She’s hot man. I’d hit that.”
“No way. You must have been dropped on your head as a baby.”
“You’re just scared that the Bears are going to lose. You’d totally bet me if you thought they would win. You’re a chicken. Bawk bawk bawk!” Mike cries as he puts his hands under his arms and flaps them like a chicken.
“I’m not a chicken. But haven’t you heard of the guy code?”
“Fuck the guy code. You’re a chicken! Hey everyone Lee DeWyze is a chicken! Yeah the American Idol! CHICKEN!” Mike screams as people turn around and look at them.
“Would you shut the fuck up if I agreed to do this?” Lee says through his teeth, hoping his brother would stop being so immature.
“Maybe…” Mike says innocently.
“Fine.” Lee finally gives in with a sigh. “Only one date. No dirty business. Dinner and that’s it.”
“What if she likes me better? I’m the hot brother, we all know this.”
“Shut your face before I take it all back. I call the shots.”
“Fine.” Mike says with a smile. “The Packers are going to win and I’m going to get a date with Allison!”
“There’s no way in hell the Packers are winning. So that date is never going to happen!”
“Whatever. We’ll see in a few hours.”
“Allison is going to be here, don’t mention this whole thing, okay?”
“Duh.” Mike says with a roll of his eyes. “You’re getting scared aren’t you? Singing in front of 10 million people doesn’t bug you, but betting your girlfriend has you shaking in you converse.”
Lee bites his lip and his hands clench into fists, he’s not going to let his little brother get to him. He has to stay calm. “I got to go ready. Here’s your ticket. Behave yourself little brother and prepared to go home crying and dateless.”
“Go break a leg out there Lee, you’re gonna need it. Good thing you’re famous you’re going to need a new girlfriend after this game is over.”
Lee doesn’t even turn around to continue this ridiculous game. He has more important things to do, like sing the National Anthem.
When he steps out into the field a few minutes after 2pm, he looks out and sees all the football fans, most drunk already, and ready for a game that hasn’t been played since 1941. It’s so loud and the energy of the crowd overtakes his body immediately. He’s singing for his city at the most important game the Bears have played in a long time. His name is called over the stadium speakers. The hometown American Idol Lee DeWyze will now sing the National Anthem. Cheers are heard and the music starts to play. He takes a deep breath and starts to sing the song that gives him chills every time.
His eyes look up at the crowd and he sees everyone singing along with him and the cameras zooming in on his face. He hits the final note and breaths a sigh of relief that he didn’t screw up as the whole stadium has irrupts into applause.
“Lee who are you rooting for today?” One of the announcers asks putting a microphone in is face.
“The Chicago Bears. Loved them since the beginning. It’s their time. Love Chicago!” He cries into the microphone with a smile.
“There we have it. Great job Lee.” He shakes Lee’s hand and then he cuts to commercial.
“Great job honey!” His mother says as she embraces her son in a hug.
“Thanks mom.” He says with a smile, embracing her in a hug as well.
“Mike’s drunk already.” His father tells him as the two look over at Mike who is talking nonstop to Allison.
“Great.” Lee says with a long sigh as he makes his way over to his younger brother and his girlfriend.
“Lee!” Allison says with a smile as she moves way from Mike and towards him.
“Hey. What’s going on?” Lee asks as he embraces his girlfriend in a hug. He eyes Mike suspiciously over her shoulder.
“Your brother is drunk and jabbering on about how the Packers are going to win this game.”
“Typical. He was doing that even before he was drunk.”
“Who says I’m drunk? I’m not drunk. I had like 3 beers.” Mike takes a long pull on his beer.
Lee turns and looks at the number of bottles that are sitting on the table across from where Mike was just sitting. “You call that 3 beers?” He asks as he points to the 6 or 7 beers bottles on the table.
“A few of those are dad’s and Allison had one.” Mike says defensively. “You need to catch up!”
“Sorry I was busy singing for millions!” He grabs a beer and pops the top. “Plus I’d like to be sober when I watch your face when the Bears win!”
“Ain’t gonna happen. You better start drinking you’re going to need the comfort later. “ Mike slurs as he tries to wink.
“Keep drinking little bro.” Lee smiles as he puts his arm around Allison’s shoulders with a nod of his head. Mike rolls his eyes and focuses his eyes on the field below.
The first half of the game as come and gone. It was intense. Back and forth scoring, lots of screaming and cussing from Mike, and Lee trying to keep his cool. Mike’s probably on his 12th beer and the more he drinks the louder he’s become. The score is 21-25 Packers and Lee is starting to get nervous.
“This is going to be the best day ever!” Mike cries as the game starts up again. He looks over at Allison and smiles.
Lee stares him down. “Don’t start Mike.” He warns before taking another long drink of his beer. He may have to get drunk to get through the rest of this game.
“What’s going on between you two?” Allison asks Lee, feeling the tension in the air.
“Nothing!” Lee says quickly, finishing his beer and reaching for another one. He knows she senses that something is up.
“He’s just scared that the Bears are going to blow it. We have a little bet going.” Mike explains to her with a laugh. “He’s totally gonna lose.”
“Shut up dick. I’m not scared!” Lee says defensively and eyes his brother coldly.
“Whoa are you on your period or something? Allison how do you date this guy? He can’t take a freaking joke. “
“You two are too much.” Allison says shaking her head with a laugh. “What are you guys betting?”
Lee stutters for a moment trying to find the words, but Mike finds an answer first. “That’s top secret!” He says with a charming smile. “But it’ll be good.”
“Ok…” Allison says her eyes narrowing.
“Lets just watch the game.” Lee says as he takes a seat next Allison at the skybox window.
It’s quiet except for Mike’s screams and jabs at Lee. The third quarter ends and the Bears are now up by 3. Mike is somewhat quieter now and Lee is thankful for that.
“Fuck!” Lee screams as Jay Cutler throws an interception and the Packers run it in for a touchdown. “Fuck him.”
“HAHAHAHAHA” Mike laughs as he gets up and does a little dance. “You’re totally getting scared now. It’s over brother, over!”
“I’m cutting you off!” Lee cries as he grabs the beer from Mike’s hand.
“Good thing the waitress has a thing for me and keeps the beers coming.” He tells Lee with an innocent smile.
“Whatever.” Lee says under his breathe as he downs the rest of his beer.
“So Allison, what’s your favorite type of food?” Mike asks as Lee turns to motion for the waitress to come over.
“Hmmm Italian I guess?” Allison answers in confusion. “Why are you asking my favorite type of food?”
“No reason.” Mike says with a shrug. “YESSS….YESSS….YES!” There’s another inception. “It’s over!”
“What the fuck?” Lee asks and he turns back towards the game. He throws up his hands in frustration.
“O-V-E-R!” Mike taunts. “You happy you made that bet now?”
“I’m about to deck you in the face. You need to get away from me…” Lee’s fists are clenched as Allison puts her arms around his shoulders and he instantly settles down.
“You’re funny when you’re pissed. I’m gonna make you mad more often.”
“You want a broken nose more often? Because I can do that for you.”
“Sure you can. I’m taller and stronger then you. Plus I’m better looking and am about to have a hot girlfriend!”
“That’s it!” Lee cries as he inches away from Allison and grabs Mike by his Packer’s jersey. “We’re taking this outside!”
“Lee…come on. Watch the rest of the game. Sit next to me…” Allison voice is persuasive as she grabs for his hands. “It’s just a game and a stupid bet.”
“If you only knew…” Lee says under his breath as he pushes Mike away from him and follows Allison’s lead back to the seats.
In the end the Bears end up losing 35-31. Mike is jumping around like some kind of monkey in a cage and it’s taking all Lee’s strength to stop himself from decking him.
“Good game brother.” Mike says putting his hand out in front of Lee.
“I’m not shaking your hand, Mike.”
“I won and you didn’t, don’t be such a bitch ass.” Mike says pretending he’s crying. “Now when do I get my prize?”
“She’s not a prize.”
“I won her fair and square!”
“Whatever Mike.” Lee turns and walks towards the door, leaving Mike and Allison staring at each other.
“She?” Allison questions as Mike shrugs. She turns to run after Lee.
Lee has made it to the elevator when she catches up with him. “What’s going on?” She calls out and he knows she’s going to be pissed.
“It was stupid….” Is all that he can get out.
“You bet me, didn’t you?” She questions him, her eyes finding his.
“It was stupid…” He says again. He’s not sure why he can’t find the words.
“Lee DeWyze you are so stupid!” She cries and her mouth moves into a smile. “You must have really believed in your team or you don’t like me all that much…” She trails off when she thinks about it.
“I’m sorry. He’s just so fucking annoying and I wanted him to shut up. He apparently has some kind of thing for you….but who would blame him? You’re beautiful, funny, smart…” She stops him mid sentence with her lips. They part a few seconds later. “You’re not mad?” He questions, still skeptical.
“You owe me big time….like taking me to see all the movies I want to see and going to the concerts I want to go to. Maybe some jewelry and you have to introduce me to Ryan Seacrest…he’s hot…”
“Sure thing. I heard he’s dating someone though.” He says with a laugh.
“Eh I’m sure we can work that out.” She jokes.
“I’m really sorry.” He says again as he takes her hand and squeezes it.
“So I really have to date Mike now?” She questions scrunching up her nose.
“Just one date. A dinner, with no funny business, I warned him of that. If he’s an asshole I’m definitely breaking his nose.”
“He’s right you know…”
“What’s he right about?” Lee questions, his brother is never right.
“He’s taller, better looking, and stronger.” She says matter of factly.
Lee’s face smile falls into frown. “I’m kidding….I’m kidding!” Allison says with a laugh as she pulls him into a hug. “The only DeWyze brother I want is you.” She points her finger into his chest. He pulls her into another kiss.
“Hey stop kissing my girlfriend! What a shitty brother you are!” Mike says as he walks up next to them.
“So I guess we’re dating now, huh?” Allison asks him.
“See that elevator?” He asks.
She nods. “Yeah.”
“I know how to make that thing stop. We have a good 5 minutes…” He says raising his eyesbrows with a smile. “We can just skip the food.”
“You’re such a little perv!” She cries with a smile.
“So no elevator sex?” Mike’s face looks like a puppy dog’s.
“No elevator sex.” She says gently as she kisses him softly on the cheek.
“Let’s go you horn dog. You have 2 hours with my girlfriend and that is it.” Lee says as the elevator opens and the 3 of them get on.
“That gives me plenty of time…” Mike drifts off with a smile.
“Dear lord help me.” Allison says with a laugh.
“Best bet ever!” Mike says looking over at the two.
“This is the last time I’m ever betting him.” Lee laughs.
“You’re such a chicken!”
The elevator opens and Lee runs after Mike. Allison stands back and watches the two. Some things never change, she thinks as she shakes her head with a smile.
