Retail blows and I really want this to happen to me because it's so cute!! I couldn't come up with a good song for this one, so I just used Mariah Carey because I love this song and the girl wants Lee for Christmas...so it makes sense. It's short...and sweet...but sucky. So enjoy because I can't write worth shit anymore.
PS. Merry Christmas
Thanks for the idea Rae <3
2 days before Christmas and she was ready to lose her mind. The endless 4am wake ups, the never-ending lines of grouchy customers, and the destruction that they left in their paths. She wanted to kill the next customer who asked for a box since the store had been out of them for the last few days, she was going to scream if someone asked her for the 500th time that day what the coupons could be used on or whether they had anymore of these in the back. Customers didn’t care if she had only 3 hours of the sleep the night before or that she’d just gotten done helping a bitchy customer find something for her granddaughter after an hour long discussion on what color would be better for her. They still expected everything from her. A smile, a pleasant greeting, the use of their coupon, and a gift box to put their newly purchased gift in. Most of the time they got a semi-smile, a quick “hello,” “coupons are not allowed on this item,” and an “we’re out of boxes, I’m very sorry.” Customers didn’t like that, but they were on their way, and she was on to her next scrooge of a customer.
After ringing customers for over an hour without a break, she was warring down. She had become a robot, saying the same exact thing to each and every customer; there was little time for small talk. She had just finished with a customer who had brought 100 items for her to ring up and decide what coupon to use on which. The transaction had probably taken 10 minutes and the line seemed to double in size in that amount of time. She sighed dramatically as she asked the next customer if they needed gift receipts.
“Yeah. They’re all gifts.” The man says as he hands over all the items he wants to purchase.
She nods her head and doesn’t look up from the screen as she continues to ring his items.
“Looks like it’s been pretty busy.” He remarks as he pulls out his wallet and looks through his credit cards.
She nods, looking up at him finally. She’s taken a back when she notices that he’s young and as the most beautiful blue eyes she has ever seen. “It’s been ridiculous! I’ve been by myself because someone called off and it’s a disaster on the floor. “
He lets out a low laugh. “I couldn’t work retail like this. I would probably have snapped on someone already.”
She smiles and lets out a light laugh also. “I want to, believe me…but I need this job.”
The man and woman behind him are huffing and puffing and she notices this. “It’ll just be a few more minutes.” She tells the line as she hurries up and rings up the rest of his purchase and grabs a bag, folding each item carefully, and placing them in. “It’s $68.47,” She tells the guy as she takes his card and runs it through the machine.
He signs his name and she hands him his bag. “Hope the rest of your day goes fast. Have a happy holiday.” He says with a smile as he lets out a little wave as he turns to walk from the line.
She nods lightly and longing in her stomach, wishing that he didn’t have to go. “Thanks. Only a few more days of this and It’ll be over. You have a great holiday too.” She calls out to him as the next customer is already in her face.
It’s another hour before someone comes in to relieve her for break. She’s happy when she can finally get away from the register. She realizes that she still has 3 hours left of her shift after her break and she sighs in disgust. She needs caffeine to make it through the rest of it. She makes her way through the crowd to the Starbucks in the mall and curses that the line is 5 people deep. Just wants her coffee without waiting forever, is that too much to ask? She gets in line and decides she just has to wait it out.
“Finally got a break?” A voice asks from behind her.
She turns to see who it is and is surprised when it’s the guy with the beautiful blue eyes. “Finally! I need caffeine and quick or you’re going to be seeing my name on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow. “Retail Salesgirl Smacks Customer in Face.”
His mouth pulls into a lopsided grin and he lets out a laugh. “We’d better get you some coffee then.”
They talk while the line slowly creeps up about what they’re doing for Christmas and what kind of coffee they like. There’s no mention of a girlfriend and she’s silently praying inside that there isn’t one. He’s hot in a non-predictable way. He’s funny, smart, and charming. He’s everything that all the guys she’s dated in the past lacked.
She finally makes it to the front of the line and orders a peppermint mocha and he orders a tall black coffee.
“I got it.” He says as he pulls out his debit card to pay.
She shakes her head and puts her card out to the lady behind the counter. “It’s okay…”
He pushes back her card and the lady takes his card. “I insist. We can’t have you going to prison because you’ve smacked a customer.” He jokes hitting her in the arm lightly.
She bursts into laughter and smiles up at him. “No we wouldn’t want that.”
She gets her coffee and he gets his. They take a seat at one of the tables in the café and sip slowly at their drinks.
“Thanks.” She says she holds up her coffee and smiles contently at him. “Thanks for the coffee and for making me smile. It’s been a long a week.”
He nods softly and smiles as well. “Glad I could make your week.”
“I didn’t say you made my week…” She says with a giggle “But its probably the best thing that has happened to me this week.”
“Wow your week has really sucked then.”
“It has….you don’t even know.”
They talk for a few more minutes and then she realizes that her break time is about done. “Wish I didn’t have to go back.” She says softly as they get up from the table and start walking back to the store.
“You could always play hooky for the rest of the day and I can buy you more coffee and we can walk around and make fun of everyone else that has to work.”
“As tempting as that sounds….I really have to go back.” She sighs, wishing that she wasn’t such of a goody-two-shoes.
“You just want to get rid of me…admit it…” He looks her in her eyes and she wants to take his hand and run far away from work, right then and there.
“Hell no…I’m not trying to get rid of you.” She shakes her head and bites her lip, hoping he doesn’t think that.
“I was joking…I know you have to get back.” They’ve made their way to the front of the store and she sighs as she looks up at the big lit up sign before turning back to him.
“It was good meeting you…” She then realizes that she doesn’t even know his name.
“Lee.” He says reaching out his hand.
“Good to meet you Lee. Can I have your phone?”
He nods slightly and hands it to her cautiously. She takes it and types her number in quickly, before handing it back. “I’m Noelle. Good meeting you Lee.” She waves as she walks back to her department and gets right back to work.
The rest of the day flies by and she’s calm, more cheerful, as thing after thing goes wrong. She thinks of Lee’s eyes and the way he made her laugh. When she finally gets off, she glances down at her phone.
It was good meeting you too. Same time tomorrow? Coffee is on me.
She smiles as she pulls on her coat and texts him back quickly.
Can’t wait.
