Sammich Radiation

While I never gave the matter a great deal of thought, I always had this sort of background assumption that the Reuben sandwich probably came from New York, maybe 1880 to 1900 or so. Not even close.

So, I lit up the Russian geiger counter today, just because. It has a little audible warner that makes a high-pitched metallic *tink!* *tinktink!* sound, almost a chirp. The window was open and the Sparrows went berserk! I don't know what they think that is, but something interesting, undoubtedly. I wonder if that sounds like babies in distress to them?

I finally turned the speaker off, and just let it flash. Sparrows calmed down within a few minutes. I've perhaps the mechanism of an experiment here, except I'm not sure what I'd investigate. I want the local birds to be calm and natural-acting.

It uses a Soviet military surplus G-M tube that's clad in metal, so it's hard to break, and responds only to gamma and cosmic radiation (tube was meant for battlefield use, obviously). I enjoy sitting there watching it go, and meditating on cosmic radiation sleeting through me. Someday I'm gonna build a gamma shield for it, so it'll be cosmic only.
