The Kingsport Times:
Titans trump Devils in finale

CLINTWOOD - Friday night was Gate City's night.
And then it wasn't.
Gate City upset J.J. Kelly 38-32 to win the Lady Blue Devils' first Region D basketball title while in the boys' championship game, Twin Springs established regional supremacy with a 70-61 win over Gate City.
The Lady Blue Devils (23-6) will play the Region C runner-up Floyd County close to home in next week's VHSL Group A state quarterfinals. The Lady Indians (25-3) will travel to face Region C champion Radford. The games will be played either Friday or Saturday - as will the Group A boys quarterfinals. Those will pit the Titans (22-5) against the Region C runner-up Galax at a convenient neutral site, while the Blue Devils (21-5) travel to face Region C champ Glenvar.
The girls' championship game marked the fifth meeting of the season between Gate City and J.J. Kelly. While the opener boasted plenty of atmosphere, it was tame when compared with the frenzied first meeting of the year between the Titans and the Blue Devils in the nightcap.
Titans sophomore Mark Dockery had the biggest game of his career, scoring 28 points while also keeping a help-side hand in Jesse McMurray's face on defense. McMurray still managed to slip free for three 3-pointers en route to 13 points.
"I just took the shots that I had. I missed a lot, but some of them went in," said Dockery, who mobilized the Red Army with three big treys. "Jesse ... I was chasing him around! I bet I got screened a thousand times tonight."
Twin Springs got 17 points and five rebounds from Chucky Lindholm, while 6-foot-8 post Tyler Webb had nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Point guard Keith Warner had eight points, six boards and four assists, while guard Derek Smith had eight points and six assists.
"The thing we talked about most with the kids was, (Gate City) has good man-to-man pressure. They put it on you, but you can't get frustrated and you can't give in to it," Twin Springs coach John McCrary said. "The longer the game went, the better our kids adjusted to the attack. Two months ago, our kids would have panicked in this situation. But they just hung in there."
The game was fast, furious and physical with seven lead changes in the first three quarters. The capacity crowd of about 2,200 was chiefly comprised of the competing Scott County factions - which took turns maintaining the intense, stress-inducing level of noise.
"This was the craziest atmosphere I've ever been in. I've never seen so many people come out," Dockery said. "I think that just goes to show what kind of fans we have in Scott County. It shows how dedicated people in Scott County are to their sports."
The score was knotted at 58 on Blue Devil Jamie Hackney's two free throws with 2:17 left. Twin Springs called a timeout at 2:10, then pulled ahead when Warner fed Lindholm in the post with 1:53 showing. After its next possession ended on a charge whistled against Josh Kilgore, Gate City set up for the full-court press.
The Titans successfully relayed the ball down the floor to Lindholm, who was fouled hard by Nate Clark under the bucket with 1:24 on the clock. Clark was called for an intentional foul, Lindholm sank both his free throws and Twin Springs capitalized on the extra possession when Dockery drained both of his bonus shots for the 64-58 lead.
Dockery went to the free throw line two more times down the stretch and sank all four shots. Clark hit a desperation 3 with 15 seconds left to cut the Titans' lead to seven, but Dockery's layup with 5.5 seconds left killed the Blue Devils' hopes of recovery.
Clark scored 19 for Gate City. Kilgore had nine, Hackney added seven and Will Humphreys had six. Both Luke Humphreys and Mark Estepp left the game with injuries.
"It was a good game. I thought both teams played extra-hard. It was a game of runs. We had ours, they had theirs," Gate City coach Scotty Vermillion said. "We're going to take things from it and learn. We've got a week to prepare for whoever we've got."
J.J. Kelly beat the Gate City girls in three of their previous four meetings, including the Lonesome Pine District tournament finals and the postseason playoff that clinched the Lady Indians' automatic berth to the Region D tourney. The Lady Blue Devils were determined not to be denied a fourth time.
"We wanted to beat them all year and if I had to choose any game, this is the one I would have wanted to win," said Gate City post Kristen Salyer, who scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds.
Kyndall Wininger, who went 3-for-4 at the charity stripe to help hold off the Lady Indians in the final minute, scored nine points for the Lady Blue Devils and handed out three assists. Lindsey Musick scored seven points and grabbed eight boards.
"Defensively, I don't think we could play any better than we did tonight," Gate City coach Hugh Godsey said. "I can't ask for more than they gave me. It was a really super effort. I think the key was that we got better shots than they did. We were a little more patient offensively.
"Our young kids gave us some good minutes early," he added. "That was also key. They don't realize it, they weren't in long, but just a minute or two is huge."
The Lady Indians got 12 points from Ashley Mulkey, who hit a 3-pointer at 4:44 left in the fourth quarter that cut Gate City's lead to 31-30. Autumn Arney scored nine points for Kelly, while Amanda Stallard finished with five.
"I just thought Gate City wanted it more than us in the first half," Kelly coach Robin Dotson said. "They got a lot of pressure on us and forced us out of the kind of offense we were trying to run. They just took it to us."
Well I gotta go we are leaving in bout 20 min!
Comments?! But please no DRAMA!
