" the aesthetics of consumerism actively instill anxiety and discontentment with our lot, reinforcing the conviction that others are living lives happier and more interesting than our own, as in the case of fashion magazines, which present mythically beautiful "glamazons" whose willowy perfection has sent many a teenage girl into a bulimic tailspin; or in the case of cleanness, whose conventions of sparkling lustrousness set impossibly high standards of sanitation for housewives, who fight heroically agianst slimy green soap scum and ring-around-the-tub...this consumerism emphasizes insufficiency and immoderation, preaching slavish dependence on possessions that we cannot afford but are portrayed as the very prerequisites of happiness...the stylistic distortions of the marketplace often reflect the tension in our attitudes towards the things and people around us: towards our children, whose waywardness we seek to smother beneath the conventions of cuteness; towards parents, whose denial of adolescent's sexuality and independence our offspring throw back in our faces by adopting exxagerated mannerisms of coolness; "
