Redskins lose

Oct 31, 2004 21:30

Apparently the Washington Redskins are good predictors of presidential elections. If they win the last home game before the election, the incumbent's party wins. Today was the last homegame before teusday. The 'skins lost to Green Bay 28-14. In my opinion this is very significant. Not only will bush lose the election, it will be partly due to ( Read more... )

In one way I think it makes more sense to elect a party stance and not a person. That way it forces you to vote for the issues and not get caught up on all the other mud slinging as much. But the problem with America working this way is that we only have two parties and in my mind each party covers a pretty broad spectrum of political beliefs. I for one believe in some things that are classic republican issues and others that are classic democratic issues. It is difficult to decide between two parties when you agree with a little of both of them. I guess the answer is to choose whichever one you agree with more. But what if there were lots of political parties and you could vote for which ever ones you agreed with. Then, like the parliament system, whichever parties people voted for the most would chose the president. That way the president would be indirectly voted on by issues and not by mudslinging and his record. But if Bush wins the election and loses the popular vote I'm sure a lot of people would be really mad because ( ... )

Yes, the Redskins lost, but it was a bunch of baloney. The 'Skins scored a touchdown to tie it at 20-20 with a few minutes left, but a stupid, stupid call by the lead official, some "illegal procedure" that was nonexistent cost Washington the game. Had the TD stood, the 'Skins likely would've kicked and made the extra point, giving them a one point lead and probably hanging on for the victory. I hope nobody mentions correlations between the Supreme Court giving Bush the victory in 2000 and an official giving the Packers the victory in 2004, in turn, giving Kerry the presidency ( ... )

Does this mean that Kerry will actually lose the election, but hve it handed to him in a combination of bad judges and a stroke of luck?

I've been searching the web for election predictions, and this is one of many superstitions. There is a cockroach-fight which is usually accurate, and this year the cockroach John Kerry beat cockroach George Bush. However, the George Bush pumpkin was catapulted farther than the John Kerry pumpkin. There have also been astrologists who predict a victory for President Bush, not that I believe in any of that (one also predicted that the president would die on August 13 . . . 2004). Missouri, likewise, always picks the winner, and this year its locked up by Bush.

By the way, on the NFL note, the Patriots' winning streak ended today, and both the Cowboys and the Texans won. Kerry is from Massachusetts; Bush is from Texas. Granted they weren't playing against each other.

As far as debacles go, I tend to believe that whoever is generally considered to be the loser this time will not pull an "Al Gore" and demand a recount of a state in question, but instead concede to the winner, wanting to spare the nation another such episode.

There is also the Halloween mask sale; the candidate whose likeness sells more masks usually wins. Bush is ahead.

I can't give you the link; I forgot the url and I don't want to search google for hours again, but I saw some mathematical, scientific analyses of the election. The probability of Bush winning ranged from 65% to 89% with about 1.2% probability of a tie (or as I like to call it, a Bush victory with the Republican control of the House).

There's another predictor that involves the World Series. It is said that whenever the St. Louis Cardinals win a World Series in an election year a democrat will win the election in a landslide. Researching the results it can be found that in 1944 and 1964, the only 2 of the 9 victories by the Cardinals in election years, Roosevelt and Johnson each won by a landslide. Though what about this election? The Cardinals lost, which means Kerry will as well, but... the Red Sox won the World Series. John Kerry represents Massachusettes...This could be a coorelation...However, all this is bologna because the rumor about the Cardinals influencing the election actually states that the incumbent will win in a landslide. That wont happen this year and if we look back on history for the times this was the case we will see that the first was during WWII and the second was on the heels of Kennedy being assassinated. So, all these predictors actually can be spun to fit the situation of the day.
