Chapter 1-14

The whole performance of Wicked was a blur to Lindsay. It was the first time she couldn´t recall a thing, she barely even noticed the intermission and when it was over she found herself outside the theatre, unsure of what to do.

Marissa still had some sort of feelings for her, she had seen it in her eyes. They had both been incredibly stupid for getting in a fight like that, they were best friends after all and Lindsay didn´t want to be apart from her best friend.

Of course she still remembered the touch of Marissa´s hand when she had intertwined their fingers, the smell of Marissa´s familiar shampoo, which she had missed so much, and the way Lindsay couldn´t stop staring at her friends lips. She loved her, yes she did. And once again realization hit her so hard that it almost knocked the air out of her lungs.

She didn´t feel numb anymore, instead there was some sort of heaviness to the feeling that was coiling up in her chest. There was a possibility that Marissa loved her too, but Lindsay was pretty sure chances were higher she didn´t.

They´ve had their moment on stage and all Lindsay had wanted to do was kiss Marissa, but she knew that the whole situation and attraction on Marissa´s side could have been based on finally seeing each other again. Lindsay didn´t want to get her hopes up, all she really wanted was to have her best friend back.

Lindsay vaguely remembered how she had gotten home that night, Derek must have somehow maneuvered her to the apartment.

She didn´t know what time it was when she woke up the next morning, all she knew was that she had dreamed about Marissa. She couldn´t remember anything happening in particular, just Marissa´s eyes, her mouth, her auburn hair and that perfect smile that made Lindsay´s heart skip a beat every time she saw it.

Lindsay sighed and opened her eyes slowly, only to find Derek kneeling beside her bed. She mumbled something unintelligible and tried to pull the covers over her head, but Derek wouldn´t let her.

“Get up sweetie, we have somewhere to go.” He sounded almost amused and Lindsay really wanted to punch him there and then.

She was really trying not to blame this on him in any way, but she was almost convinced that things would have been a lot easier if she had never met him.

“Come on Lindsay!” Derek sounded a little more insisting now and if she had enough energy, Lindsay would have attempted to actually punch him in the face now.

Instead she turned her attention to her phone that had started vibrating.

The display showed the name of Joanne, her co worker. Within a few seconds Lindsay sat up straight in bed. Did she forget a shift? Was she supposed to work today?

She hastily reached for the phone and brought it up to her ear, but Joanne cut her off before she could even say anything.

“Good afternoon sunshine, no time for small talk. Get dressed and follow that handsome fellow of yours. We´ve got plans!”

Lindsay opened her mouth to protest, but Joanne had already hung up. Lindsay kept staring at her phone for a while before she looked back up at Derek, who was smirking at her.

“Told you so, now get up and dressed! We´re already running late!” and with that he was gone and Lindsay couldn´t help but stare after him for a minute.

What was even going on here? What did Joanne and Derek had to do with each other? How did they even know each other? She was confused but still got up and went over to her suitcase, which she still hadn´t unpacked, to get dressed.

She didn´t know why, but somehow this seemed like something that was important, something she really shouldn´t miss.

Lindsay has had just enough time to put on one of her dresses and to grab a light jacket before Derek basically pulled her out of her room, down the stairs and kept on marching across Times Square and onwards until they were at the corner of 36th and 3rd Ave.

Lindsay stopped and freed her hand from Derek´s. “What are we…even…doing here?” she asked, a little out of breath. “We could have at least taken a cab!”

Derek shook his head and nodded at a sign that was right in front of them.

“Too much traffic, but we´re here now.”

Lindsay followed his gaze and came to read the sign.

“An Italian restaurant? You kicked me out of bed because you wanted to take me out for dinner? Look, I appreciate the effort but… hey!” Lindsay didn´t make it any further because Derek just opened the door and pushed her inside.

There weren´t a lot of people inside, but Lindsay didn´t even bother to give them a closer look. It wasn´t like she actually had time to do it anyway, because Derek kept pushing her into the back of the room and made her sit down at a table in the corner.

“Seriously Derek!” Lindsay started to get a little angry, she should have definitely stayed in bed. “What are we doing here? I´m not even hungry!”

Derek shook his head slightly and gave her another smirk. “Calm down, love. I´m gonna go to the restroom now, just promise me you will stay.”

Lindsay bit her lip and nodded reluctantly.

“But I´m not staying because of you…” she muttered. Instead of looking offended though, Derek just gave her a wink and disappeared.

He still wasn´t back five minutes later and Lindsay was about to just follow him and actually slap him across the face (because yes, she was that angry) when she found a waiter approaching her. He gave her a friendly smile and placed a plate in front of her.

“But I didn´t…” Lindsay started, but the waiter was already gone. She sighed and looked down at the plate, when her heart stopped for a second.

There was a single pancake on her plate and it had I´m sorry written on it with chocolate sauce. Lindsay looked up, and there she was.

Marissa was standing about ten feet away from her, a shy smile on her face. Lindsay opened her mouth, but it seemed like nobody would let her finish any of her sentences today.

“Please.” Marissa looked down at her shoes for a moment before taking a deep breath and looking back up at Lindsay. “Before you say anything, let me do this.”

She glanced over her shoulder and Lindsay caught sight of Derek, who was standing by the bar, and waved at her with his I pod in his hand. The I pod was connected to a cd player and suddenly a slow tune began playing.

Lindsay turned her head when she heard Marissa´s voice.

Oh, I'm a panic I can't explain
I'm prepared to make all of your mistakes
Stricken like a flower being bent by the rain
Won't you let me come home

Lindsay felt her heartbeat accelerate, she wasn´t able to look away from Marissa. The other girl looked so gorgeous and all Lindsay wanted to do was get up and kiss her, but somehow she didn´t really trust her legs to work right now.

Let me come home
Let me come home
Can't you see my heart is boiling
Can't you see my heart is boiling

Tears had long formed in Marissa´s eyes and she didn´t know how much longer her voice would last. She knew that this was it, her only chance to say sorry, she had to put all emotions into this one moment. She had to prove to Lindsay that she really was sorry, and that she loved her.

Life is short, but the lines are long
Everybody dies, but we're not gone
Won't you please help me sing along
Let me come home

Marissa had almost reached Lindsay, and she couldn´t hold back the tears any longer. She barely noticed the tears that had formed in Lindsay´s eyes, it took all she had to keep on singing.

Let me come home

Oh please, just let me come home.

The music faded away and Marissa took a deep breath, trying to find the right words to continue. She had prepared a speech, planned out exactly what she would say, but suddenly she wasn´t so sure anymore.

“I…I…” she looked at Lindsay and then, without even thinking about it, got down on her knees to be on the same level as her best friend. It was a good thing, because Marissa wasn´t really trusting her legs anymore.

“Linds.” She looked up at the other girl and took her shaking hands in hers.

“I´m sorry, I´m so so sorry that I was such an idiot! I had no right to freak out on you, but I need you! I love you so much and we can move into an apartment in the city together if that´s what you want!”

Lindsay looked down at their hands and back up at Marissa, gorgeous Marissa, who was taking her breath away every second of their lives.

“Say that again.” She whispered.

“We can move into an apartment in the city together.”

“No, before that.”

Marissa caught her breath and suddenly found Lindsay smiling at her. Her heart began to beat faster in an instant.

“I love you.”

Lindsay freed her hands from Marissas, just to grab the other girl by the shirt and pull her up for a kiss.

Their lips crashed and there it was, finally.

It was fireworks and butterflies and everything they´ve ever wanted. It was like they´d finally found a home, and it wasn´t a place, they had found it in each other.

People in the restaurant started clapping and when they pulled apart, Lindsay could see that they weren´t just random guests, but Joanne and other friends of Marissa that she had seen around Northport.

Marissa smiled and reached out her hand to wipe away the tears that were still left on Lindsay´s cheeks. Lindsay smiled down at her best friend, which she would be able to call her girlfriend now. That, and Marissa intertwining their fingers, made her smile even more.

“I love you too, and I don´t care where we live. I´m happy as long as I´m with you!”
