I never thought I'd be writing this.

Today I did something I never thought I'd do.  Not in a million years, not home, and certainly not Beirut ( Read more... )

I saw "Eclipse" too. Willingly. Why? Cause fuck it, its a movie and I am a movie snob. I agree with you, its the most bearable of the three, and since it clocks in in a little under 2 hours its already leaps and bounds better than the pushing 3 hour "New Moon".

I despise Edward/Bella. Mostly cause of Bella, but mainly because they just have no depth and apparently this is the romance to end all romances to have ever been a romance in romance town. I was watching a review that asked some good questions. Have these two ever talked about anything that wasn't "This is why we should/shouldn't be together and fuck" or exposition? Or name one interest that Bella and Edward have in common? Or hell, name one thing that Bella is interested in PERIOD? They just have no depth as characters, and are so poorly constructed that each moment on screen they share I just scream in my head in pain.

I'd watch a movie about Jasper and Alice. What's that, you were a confederate civil war major who got seduced by three hot chicks to start a vampire army, but gave all that up when you met your one true love? That's a far more interesting story and I want to see how they're relationship started and unfolded soooooooo much more than "Plz make me a vampire so we can fuck" romance of the main couple.

Fuck, I'd even watch "I only have 5 lines, but each one's hysterical" muscle dood vampire and blond chick.

"...line...."

"...line...I_forgot_my...line..."

I agree with you on the Jasper/Alice thing. Fuck, even Emmett/Rosalie, Carlisle/Esme...the side characters are INFINITELY more interesting than the protagonists! If written by a competent writer, you might be able to build a story around two less interesting characters that the major plot revolved around - but only if you spend the absence of attention on the main characters or their interactions to explore those characters, and to give the momentum for those characters to really carry the story without making them Mary Sues'.

Jacob is a pretty interesting character - and Taylor actually does a really good job. I really felt bad for him, and through the whole thing, I wanted to cooter punch Bella for being such a little shit to him (which I know, probably wasn't the intended reaction). The idea in general of Native Americans being the first (if only) lycanthropes is rather interesting considering the importance of wolves in their lore.

Watching the movie ALMOST made me want to read the books more, as I've heard from people like Lindsey and Patches that while not amazing, the books are guilty pleasures, and I can deal with that now and again. Back in High School ("The Dark Ages" when I/most of us went through our embarrassing "goth/teen angst" phase) I would have probably enjoyed it, even with the shitty writing. But as is, I just can't take Meyers seriously as an author, or that series with really any credibility.
