Summary: "... And they rode off into the sunset." After Selphie finishes reading one of romance novels, Sora can't figure out why anyone would want to ride off into the sunset. Riku didn't really care, but he'll listen.
Notes: No idea where I got this from... But I always thought that while Riku is more concerned about worldly things, Sora would have his attention caught by smaller things. Things that people usually wouldn't care about. Obviously I've been doing some thinking too and hence this fic!

“… And they rode off into the sunset. The end,” Selphie murmured with a dreamy sigh, gently closing the book on her lap as she finished yet another romance novel. “Wasn’t that romantic?” she asked ecstatically, turning to her friends for their inputs.

Kairi nodded her agreement, while the boys muttered incoherent answers to save themselves from having to lie or having Selphie wreck havoc on their miserable lives. Oh, life’s little dilemmas.

After a day of fun, everyone just wanted to relax a bit before heading home. Selphie had a slightly different plan, though. While all of them sat on the stone steps, listening to the gentle crashing of the waves against the shore, and waiting in anticipation for the upcoming sunset, Selphie whipped out her newest romance novel. Declaring in a tone that left no room for discussion, Selphie stated that she’ll finish reading aloud her newest book after filling them in briefly on what happened beforehand.

By the time she was done, the sunset had already begun and bathed everything in a warm orange glow. Everyone said their goodbyes and began their trek in various directions to their own homes. Only Riku and Sora went the same way, but despite the companionship, it was pretty much the same as being alone to Riku considering the fact that Sora was abnormally silent.

“Hey, Riku…” Sora said in a half-whisper, his tone confused and wondering as he spoke.

“What is it?” Riku asked as he turned his gaze to his best friend.

“The ending of Selphie’s book…” he began, eyebrows scrunching together as he strained to get out the words running through his mind, “…Why did they ride off into the sunset?” Sora inquired finally, turning his eyes towards their own sunset.

Riku shrugged although Sora couldn’t see it. Was this what he’s been thinking about the whole time? Why the couple rode off into the sunset?

“For aesthetic purposes, probably. It’s really a cliché ending and it’s considered to be romantic, “ Riku answered with another shrug as Sora turned his attention to him.

“I don’t think so,” Sora stated. “Well, about it being romantic, anyways. It’s rather… sad to me…”

“Sad? What’s so sad about it?” Riku asked. He looked at Sora curiously; smiling softly for Sora always came up with strange, abstract ideas that he usually ends up agreeing with. He just wondered where this conversation will lead.

Sora remained silent though, lips pursed as fragments of thoughts flitted through his mind. Thinking that Sora wasn’t going to elaborate, Riku turned his eyes back to the dusty road in front of them.

“You don’t think so?” Sora asked, quietly, softly. “The sunset itself is beautiful, but it’s also melancholy and sad, isn’t it? It signifies the ending of another day, so why would anyone want to ride off into something that’s ending when they want to create a new beginning, a new life together? Wouldn’t it be more fitting to ride off into the sunrise?”

Riku laughed earning a glare from Sora. Smirking slightly, Riku replied, “Maybe they don’t want to get up so early?”

“I’m serious!”

“Alright, alright. They want to start a new beginning right?” Riku watched Sora nod before he continued. “Then perhaps riding off into the sunset is symbolizing the ending of their old life so they can begin their new one with the rising sun.”

“I didn’t think about it like that…” Sora mumbled. “But I still don’t like the idea! I mean it gets dark after the sun sets! What would happen if you got lost? That wouldn’t be so romantic, now would it?”

Riku laughed, “Okay, I get it. You prefer riding off into the sunrise. You’ll have to get up pretty early for that, though.”

“I wouldn’t mind. I think it’s much better than riding off into something as disheartening, though beautiful, like a sunset.” Flashing a grin at Riku, Sora exclaimed, “Besides, if you aren’t willing to get up that early for someone you love, then what kind of lover are you?”

Smiling fondly at Sora, they continued their walk home with Sora chattering about one thing or another and Riku just relishing the sound of Sora’s voice. Reaching the house with a quaint little picket fence, and charming little flowerbeds, Riku felt a little disappointed that the walk has ended.

“Well, here’s my stop!” Sora exclaimed joyously. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”

Riku nodded, and waited until Sora was safely indoors before continuing his lone walk home. The sun had set sometime during their walk, and it was already twilight. Riku looked up at the sky as bright stars appeared one after another as if some higher being were dropping tiny diamonds across the night sky.

Whether it is sunset or sunrise, as long as you’re by my side, nothing else will matter.

And there you have it! My crappy attempt at making Sora thoughtful and whatnot. Even if it sucks, please comment. Comment would make me happy. Please? =D
