DERBY IS GOING BIG TIME!!!

So on October 2nd, Whip It! will debut…
The movie is about a pageant girl gone derby. She sees it, falls in love with it and is determined to become a part of it even though she is not old enough nor does she know how to skate. It is based on a true story, but to be honest, from what I have seen of it… it could be every derby girls’ story. When I see the previews and Babe Ruthless says “I am in love with this!” it nearly brings me to tears every time.
It is Drew Barrymore’s first time Directing a movie and she also stars in it along with Ellen Page, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Zoe Bell, just to name some of the more prominent actors/actresses. Not to mention the countless Detroit derby girls who will also be in the film!
This is massive for our sport. Their website currently directs you to all of the different leagues in the US so you can find your nearest derby league. We haven’t seen it yet, but have been told by those in Detroit that yes, there are some stupid elbow and illegal moves… however, those get the girl removed from the game. It also, is banked track, but whatever… derby is derby.
The MOST AMAZING thing happening is that RAVE theaters in Westroads is holding a huge opening of this movie for us. At the 7pm showing on October 2nd, we will be receiving RED CARPET ENTERANCE to the mall after a LIMO picks us up! We will have autographs before the game and tentatively planning on having an expo in the parking lot prior to the movie! … not to mention that we will be on SEVEN billboards across Omaha paid for by RAVE theaters and a green room?!! Someone please help me get my jaw up off the floor.
I don’t know if I can possibly put into words how happy I am. I got choked up just reading this great news from our PR Director. After putting my heart and soul into this league for three and a half years, it is getting huge. I would be happy with derby without this amazing news… but really… this is incredible.
OH and I nearly forgot. We had our first Meet & Greet for newbies last week... four of them came to practice yesterday (even though they don't have to come until boot camp at the end of October). All four of them came almost fully padded and are in great shape in some respects. These girls could be what our league needs to be AWESOME in a few years.
