You stared at at the thick bamboo stick he was handing you as if it was the most abominable thing on earth. "What the fuck is that?" you ask, displeased that he took the time to laugh instead of explaining it to you. "Baseball nut!" you insisted, and he held up a hand in defense.

"I'm sorry! It's just too funny!" he tried explaining, but you would have none of it. You crossed your arms over your chest. Sensing your annoyance, he smiled and slid on the bed to sit behind you. Your back barely touched his chest as he leaned over to place the bamboo in your hands. "It's a rainmaker. I got it from a curio shop in Okinawa."

You studied the rainmaker in your hands. It didn't look very exceptional, aside from the soft rumblings inside it as if small stones were running its length. "So, it makes rain?" you asked. Somehow, your question sounded very stupid. Yamamoto probably felt the same when you heard him chuckle.

Yamamoto held the rainmaker -- or rather, your hands -- and tilted it slowly. The little things inside the bamboo slid down, creating a racket very much like the patters of rain your hear on your roof. "It has nails hammered all over the sides," Yamamoto explained, letting your fingers run the length of the bamboo, "And it has very small shells and pebbles inside. So when you do this, it creates a rain-like sound." He demonstrated by turning the bamboo to a vertical position. The shells and pebbles inside it dropped to the bottom of the bamboo while making sounds like harsh rain.

You played with the rainmaker for a while, tilting and turning it over and over in your hands. You have learned how to soften the sounds, diminishing the rattle to merely a hush. You have learned how to make a racket so loud it could wake the freaking neighbors. You smiled a little, engrossed, not noticing that Yamamoto was watching you with undivided interest from the mirror across your bed.

After a while, you felt fingers ghosting on your neck, sweeping away the strands that fall almost to your shoulders. You tried to look at Yamamoto behind you, but you were stopped by the feel of his lips on your neck, gently laying their love on your skin. You tilt your head sideways, absently tipping the rainmaker with your movement. Little pebbles and shells ran with you as you escaped in the comforting warmth of Yamamoto's mouth. You let Yamamoto kiss you deeply, the moments of separation obviously taking its toll on both of you. You let go of the rainmaker, letting it fall on your lap as you twist your body to embrace your lover tightly. If you let go, it might end, and your longing won't be satiated again for a long time.

Yamamoto answered your need with an even more intense yearning. He impatiently pawed at your clothes and revered the skin uncovered, as if every second without touching you would be wasteful. He pushed the rainmaker away, towards the foot of the bed, and pulled you closer to him. He made love to you relentlessly, desperately. The gentle Yamamoto who always took his time and treated you like a fragile flower wasn't there, yet you clung to him as if he was the only thing needed to keep your heart beating -- to keep you alive.

The bed rocked eagerly below you, creaks from its polished wood and springs melding with your cries. The rainmaker at the foot of the bed dropped one of its ends to the floor, and your cries of Yamamoto's name mingled with the rain-like sound crackling at your feet. Tonight there was only Yamamoto and the sound of rain imprinted in your being.

"Why did you buy me a rainmaker?" you asked when you were both under the blanket, lazily staring at each other.

Yamamoto grinned. You were relieved to see his usual boyish smile on his face. It reminded you of the annoying Yamamoto you fell in love with years ago, not that you disliked his serious and determined face. "It's for you to remember," he announced with the smile.

"What do you mean?" Somehow, you knew what he was going to say. You just need to hear it from him.

"So that when you hear the rain, you will remember me," he replied, tangling his fingers in your hair as he pulled you for a kiss. "So that when you play it, you will miss me less."

You called him an idiot but still, you crept closer to the man you seldom see, yet you cherish with all your heart.

You still didn't know it but after a few days, you will break your control and call him. He will chuckle on the phone as you curse him in different languages. He was an idiot and he was playing with you all along. For the rainmaker did not appease your yearning. Instead, it made you want to see him all the more.

"Ahaha. I'm sorry I'm so possessive," he will answer and you will curse him to the depths of hell, even if deep inside, you feel very much loved.

.end.
