It was a bad idea, Kyungsoo knew it from the start, but he could do nothing as he strode past the cafe entrance, knowing that he'd been seen by the group of rowdy boys seating by the window.
He can't back away now. He'll just have to go through today, just today.
He hasn’t taken three steps into the said table’s direction when the teasing started.
"Look who it is, Do Kyungsoo in the flesh!"
“Our little Kyungie has decided to grace us all with his presence. Let us all applaud him!”
Ridiculous clapping ensued right after, making the small male roll his eyes. Typical idiocy from Park Chanyeol.
“Finally got tired of your cave, you homo erectus?!”
Someone had the audacity to take him into a chokehold, and he glared at Sehun till the younger got the message. Some things never change, Kyungsoo thinks, as he eyed everyone around him.
After dislodging himself from the maknae, Kyungsoo flashed a small smile and befittingly reciprocated the pat in the back given to him by Jongdae.
“I’m glad to see you all too, idiots.”
"It's been a while, Soo. We thought you really disappeared on us. Where have you been?"
He could only manage a small shrug and took a sip from the Latte that had been placed in front of him.
“I had so many exams, Minseok hyung. Also, may I remind you that I am currently working on a thesis, that I’m dying to finish. Not everyone has time to slack off during the final months of college,” he replies, side eyeing Jongin and Sehun who were seniors like him, except they like to act like they’re freshmen.
“That’s true,” Yixing hyung hums, smiling at Kyungsoo’s direction.
“I guess it’s good that you’re finally back. We missed you.” Junmyeon hyung gently placed a hand on top of Kyungsoo’s in a warm, caring manner.
“How long has it even been since we last saw you?” Chanyeol recalls, munching on his churros like a wild goat, and Kyungsoo chuckles.
“Six months?”
Kyungsoo shakes his head, smiling as he places the coffee mug down gently. He purses his lips in thought, before replying.
“Nah, I haven’t been gone that long. I think it’s just almos-“
“Four months. Three months and eighteen days, to be exact.”
Of course, Kyungsoo knows how long exactly he has avoided his friends, but for it to come from someone else’s mouth, is just too dumbfounding.
Kyungsoo has never whipped his head so fast in his life.
There before him, stands the man he’s dreamt of during every single night of those three months and eighteen days.
Of course he’d be here.
It was foolish of him not to think that he wouldn’t be there, when he is a part of their tiny group of friends, and one of the people Kyungsoo closest to.
“Baekhyun.” He somehow finds the strength in his voice and addresses the other, trying for a cheerful voice, but ending up flat.
“Do Kyungsoo, it’s been a while. ” the other man- Baekhyun smiles, and it’s almost like a punch in the gut, how familiar that smile is, and how much he yearned to see it, but Kyungsoo knows better. He can see how strained it is, and how the tilt of his lips doesn’t seem to reach his eyes, and he wonders, how Baekhyun has been through those long nights.
The two of them sat there, staring at each other for what seemed like ages, before two arms managed to pull both of them into a chokehold, earning an indignant squawk from both unsuspecting males, and laughter from the rest of the gang, who seemed entertained by this show.
“What the fuck, Park-“
“I swear, you ruined my hair, you moron!”
The taller man obviously didn’t notice anything, as he laughed and rubbed his fist into both men’s heads, oblivious to the tension rising previously.
“Hey now, don’t go fighting, children! The purpose of this meeting is make amends, and for you two to patch things up and be good ol’ best friends like you were before,” he chided, when he caught Kyungsoo frowning and Baekhyun sighing loudly.
After some struggle, both Kyungsoo and Baekhyun managed to free themselves from the deathgrip, and after finally resettling down, Kyungsoo cleared his throat, avoiding his ex-best friend’s eyes.
“We didn’t fight. We never fought, so cut it out.”
And it was true. Fighting means the both of them bothered to make an argument about something, but that wasn’t the case. The case was that Kyungsoo had been so hopelessly in love with Baekhyun since grade school, and although their squad of nine was sometimes a good distraction, his feelings eventually started to eat him alive, because no matter how long he struggled to fight it, he just can’t look at Baekhyun without feeling like a million suns would burst in him. No matter whom he went to hang out with, they can never shed off Byun Baekhyun off his mind, until one day, Kyungsoo’s suns brought him heartache.
Kyungsoo remembers everything, how hot and sticky that afternoon was, how glad he was that his classes ended early and how he could hear Baekhyun’s voice from the other side of their shared dormitory as he enters the door. Curiosity had him sneaking into Baekhyun’s room, where he can see Baekhyun, whose back was facing him, sitting in his bed and Kyungsoo’s heart skipped a beat as he took in the sight of Baekhyun, whose back was facing him, sitting topless on his bed, his head thrown back as he kept his eyes tightly shut in pleasure.
It’s not the first time Kyungsoo has seen Baekhyun pleasuring himself, in fact, by this time, he swears he shouldn’t be affected by it still, but he is, and his mouth goes dry as his best friend moans even more. Kyungsoo feels himself grow stiff, as his body reacts to the sensuality he’s seeing, but was soon cut off by Baekhyun’s sultry groans.
“Yes, like that. Your mouth is doing so good, Taehyungie.”
And Kyungsoo snaps out of his reverie, before he finally registers the lewd sucking noises coming from the other side of Baekhyun’s queen sized bed, and it clicks into place. He makes his way for the door, and slams it as hard as he can, running down the stairs through five floors as fast as his legs can carry him.
It feels like he’s been hit with a glass bottle in the chest repeatedly, and Kyungsoo knows he shouldn’t be upset. It’s no secret that Baekhyun was fancied by most if not all of the population in the university, and the two of them were just best friends, he shouldn’t be upset if his best friend of eight years was sleeping around and not telling him.
He shouldn’t be upset if all his dreams of loving Baekhyun and being loved back came crashing down on him like an avalanche. He shouldn’t care at all, if Baekhyun doesn’t like him back, but why the hell does it hurt?
Then, Kyungsoo remembers.
“Kyungsooooo! I only have you in this whole wide ugly world. Please tell me you’ll be with me till we’re old and smelly.”
“You’re drunk again, Byun.”
“Am not! Okay, maybe a bit teensy weensy tipsy, but not drunk-drunk. I know what I’m saying.”
“Sure, you do.”
“I also know that I love you with all of my heart, Kyungsoooooo.”
He can feel that tears pooling in his eyes and he fights so hard not to let them fall.
“Hey, Kyungsoo?”
“Yes?”
“What do you think will happen to us after college?”
“I don’t know, jobs, maybe? Me dealing with your crap like always?”
“Oh, but you love me, don’tcha?”
“Nah.”
“You wound me.”
Kyungsoo found himself in the university football field, and he’s almost out of breath, but he refuses to stop running. He can’t stop running.
“Baekhyun?”
“hm?”
“What happened? Are you okay? Geez- Baekhyun, what are these bruises, what the hell!”
“They’re nothing, just- I got injured while practicing the stunts, ya know. For the drama.”
“WHAT?! This is not okay, we need to get these cleaned.”
“Awww, are you worried for me, Kyungie?”
“Shut it, Baek.”
“You are, you’re not even denying it.”
“…”
“I love you, Kyungsoo. You’re the bestest best friend ever.”
“You’re the best, Kyungie!”
“What would I ever do without you?”
“You don’t know how much you mean to me, Kyungsoo.”
“Kyungsoo-“
“Kyungie!”
“My best friend in the whole wide galaxyyy!”
Kyungsoo sits on a bench, and he doesn’t even know how he got here, but he’s on the top floor of the astronomy building, where he used to stargaze with Baekhyun, back when they were clueless freshmen idiots, they had so so many memories on that rooftop, from sneaking there at ungodly hours of the day, to eating lunch up there, where there’s a small garden to keep them company. It’s there, where Kyungsoo gazed at Baekhyun’s sleeping face while he points out where Capella is, before realizing that his companion has dozed off. It’s the first time Kyungsoo says “I love you” to Baekhyun, and probably the last time. And it’s there where his tears fall down like rain on the concrete floor.
It’s also where Kyungsoo decides that he must leave, and leave he does.
Do Kyungsoo never thought he’d be stupid enough to accept an internship 431 miles away, but it’s the only escape he has and he took it.
“Kyungsoo? Are you okay, buddy?”
Kyungsoo blinks and he sees fingers being waved before his eyes, and his eyes refocus on the pairs of concerned eyes focused on him, and he gapes at it all.
“What?”
“Ah, he’s being a total idiot. It means he’s alright,” Chanyeol grins, earning him a sharp smack at the head.
“You were spacing out, dude.” Yixing hyung says, reaching out to touch Kyungsoo’s forehead. “You’re not feverish, so it must be alright.”
“I’m fine, I’m just…tired, that’s all. I haven’t gotten sleep lately.” He excuses, hoping it works.
He tries to avoid glancing at the man beside him, but it’s getting difficult as the day progresses, and so, before the group decides to part for the day, Kyungsoo spares him a glance, but soon regrets it, as he sees a pair of eyes piercing through him like a sword.
It’s only the two of them, along with Jongdae now. Eventually, Jongdae leaves as well, and it leaves the two of them with the tension that rebuilds in between them. Kyungsoo wants to go home and forget this day ever happened, and his farewell is at the tip of his tongue when two arms wrap themselves around him tightly, and he hears faint whisper, almost a plea.
“Kyungsoo, I don’t know what to say, or what I can do to make things right. But please, don’t give up on me. I’m sorry that I hurt you, I didn’t know back then, I never thought- I- Please come home… please, Kyungsoo.”
He tries to speak, but no words come to him. It’s like Kyungsoo’s mute and helpless as his heart hurts so much because his best friend is crying.
“Kyungsoo, please…I’m begging you…please fall in love with me again.”
And just like that,
Kyungsoo’s resolve crumbles into ashes.
He cups his best friend’s face, studying Baekhyun’s eyelashes, damped with tears, and his mouth, with lips red from too much talking, his nose and cheeks and everything Kyungsoo loves about him is right before his eyes again, and maybe three months and eighteen days is enough for him to forgive himself, and Baekhyun, and maybe start again.
And so, Kyungsoo kisses his best friend, and he feels the thundering of his pulse, as his heart roars back to life, reminding him of the love that never left.
Some things never change, he guesses.
And his love for Baekhyun is definitely one of those things that never wil.
