sickish

I've been somewhere on the 'I have a cold' spectrum this entire winter. Today my phlegm is pretty much preventing me from speaking entirely beyond a creaky whisper. I'm debating not going to work with the pre-schoolers today. In the last two days, 3 of them have gone home sick, so it's actually as much for them as it is for my sake. (They may also be contributing to my continuing cold.) But...I'm still torn. I think I'll feel guilty either way.

And then I'm thinking about how often I'm hacking stuff up. And I'm thinking about my friend who has an adorable 3 year old daughter who has an incurable, rare, progressive lung disease. In her case, her body doesn't break up phlegm and causes every cold to become full-on pneumonia. She's had pneumonia 3x in the last year. So she's on the list for a lung transplant. And I've never asked my friend about specifics for prognosis, but if she's on the transplant list...I'm assuming it's necessary, and I don't want to force her to think too hard about it. I'm sure she already does and far too often. She went on the list recently, and I really hope she gets it soon.

Anyway, speaking of the same friend, we went to high school together, and we've been discovering that we have SO MUCH in common recently. On Friday (I hope I feel better tomorrow. Part of the reason, I'm concerned about her daughter is because I'm scared of getting her or her daughter sick.), I'm meeting with her about a neighborhood mapping project with high school students in the Humboldt Park/Logan Square area. It's kinda/sorta shaping up like the forces who fought against the Chicago 21 Plan. Interesting reading here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_21_Plan

And when I hung out with her last week, we talked about how much we had been inspired by the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative, which I learned about when I first took a class from Jody Kretzman (who I need to email). Anyway, it's great making new friends who I have so much in common with!
