Namida Surprise

Akutsu was unbelievably happy. He was so happy it was painful. Maybe that was why he felt like he was about to cry, because he was so full of everyone else’s love that his normally cold tsun-tsun heart was about to explode of dere.

Almost everyone had gone home already - Yukkii, Negi, Maeyama-shi, and Mitsuya were still around - so he excused himself to the adjoining room for a moment, under the pretext of calling his parents. He closed the door carefully and then flopped down on the couch and let a few tears trickle out. After a minute of letting his feelings pour out, he felt good enough to go back out without getting all gooshy in front of everyone.

He swiped one of his birthday tissues across his eyes, blew his nose, and opened the door. Yukkii was standing just outside, hand raised to knock. “Oh, Shin-chan, you startled me,” he said brightly. “We were thinking about going home now since it’s getting late, so…” he trailed off as he took in Akutsu’s slightly-bloodshot eyes and the tissue in his hand. “What’s wrong?” he asked, pushing him back into the room and closing the door behind him.

“Nothing,” Akutsu replied honestly. “I’m really happy right now.”

“But if it was nothing, you wouldn’t be crying, right?” Yukkkii’s eyes were starting to water and he hugged Akutsu tightly. “You’re not allowed to cry on your birthday, that’s too sad.”

“No, really-” Akutsu tried to explain, but Yukkii hugged him too tightly to let any more words out.

“It’s not… because of when I kissed Ookubo-kun earlier, is it?” Yukkii asked after a moment, taking a step back and staring at the ground.

“…What?”

Yukkii started twisting one of the buttons on his shirt. “I thought, maybe that hurt your feelings. Because you were jealous.”

“Huh?” Akutsu blushed. “Jealous? Of Ookupyon?”

“Because… you like me, right, Shin-chan? Don’t you?”

Akutsu’s heart started racing uncontrollably, the way it did whenever he fought Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII, a mixture of moe-moe love-love KYUN and OMG-I’m-going-to-DIE. Of course Akutsu liked Yukkii more than anything, more than Arai-kun or Ryuuki or Tomo or maybe even Mio, but that was one of those things that you just didn’t talk about. It didn’t mean he had the right to get jealous of Yukkii acting, well, normally by throwing himself all over everybody else. If he did, he would probably explode after ten minutes with him and two other people, and he liked being able to do photoshoots for M-Graphic, thank you very much.

At long last, he managed to stammer out a few words. “I… well… yeah… but… you’re not supposed to tell me that you know, it’s not fair!”

“I think what’s unfair is keeping it a secret. People get hurt that way!”

Akutsu flinched. He knew where this was going. He played enough otome games and missed enough flags to know that this was the part where he got rejected and Yukkii never wanted to talk to him again and he had to desperately try and get a secondary not-so-bad ending with one of the other boys, or at least a CG or two. He decided that current efforts were not enough and all scientists everywhere should immediately drop what they were doing and work on figuring out how to install a restart button in life.

Yukkii moved forward, causing Akutsu to take a hesitant step back. They repeated the process until Akutsu collided with the couch. Yukkii leaned in, balancing on his toes, and kissed Akutsu on the cheek, just like he had with Ookubo an hour earlier.

“I’m so sorry, Shin-chan, I never meant to hurt you like this… You know, what’s really unfair is when somebody knows two people like each other but decides not to say anything for, like, a year. And then when they finally do say something, you feel like you’ve missed out on so much because of your own selfishness in not confessing sooner.” Yukkii looked into his eyes searchingly, then leaned forward and kissed him again, this time on the lips. “But now we both know everything, right?”

“Er. Um. Yes.” Akutsu sat down heavily, mind reeling. This was like if suddenly right before Sephiroth was about to kill you, he suddenly healed your entire party and then started fighting on your side and being all cool and mysterious and beautiful without trying to stab your face off.

Or maybe like if right before Sephiroth was about to kill you, his final attack was to jump you and make out with you and suck out all your HP that way.

“Um,” Akutsu said again. “I love you.”

Yukkii giggled and jumped onto him. “I know, right?”

Kissing turned out to be really fun and really gross, especially when tongues were involved. Akutsu tried as hard as he could to keep it together, but eventually couldn’t take it anymore and started laughing.

“What?” Yukkii propped himself up on his elbow and pouted.

“No, I just…” Akutsu took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and thought about Mukuro. Mukuro was awesome at talking about his feelings, he bet. “It’s just, before you came in, I was thinking about how this was the best birthday ever. And now it’s the best forever and ever and ever, like when Miku had a concert and she sang my favorite song, or like the time Ryuuki wore cat ears, or-”

“Shin-chaaaan.”

“Yeah?”

“Just because you don’t get jealous doesn’t mean I don’t.”

Akutsu had already failed at one dating sim cue tonight and his otaku pride wouldn’t let him miss this one too. He cupped Yukkii’s face in one hand and whispered, “You are the only one I truly love,” in his best sexy voice. (Thank you, Kiuchi Hidenobu.) Then he leaned in and kissed him on the forehead.

Yukkii didn’t swoon the way a heroine was supposed to, but at least he stopped looking at him with that fiercely possessive expression on his face. He giggled. “Well, I’ll allow it just this once.” He laid his head down on Akutsu’s chest. “Happy birthday, Shin-chan.”
