Maleficent was not at the Institute--for now it was unnecessary, and watching from afar was proving to be great entertainment. Aside from those drawn unwittingly into higher levels, there were the five specifically drawn to maintain this illusion--powerful, or terrified, or just unlucky. She took great interest in watching the worlds they had created for themselves, built of fears and nightmares of their own imagining.

That they were simply suspended in great pillars of darkness was not something they would be aware of, so lost in fighting their own personal demons were they.

(ooc: aka this is where the five characters who are trapped may write one-shots about how their character is doing, describe their world, or request some NPC RPing out of their nightmare)

Alphonse woke up, lying on the floor in some room. Blinking, he slowly sat up a looked around. The last thing he remembered was being at the school and feeling a... a pull to go to a certain place ( ... )

Whatever was chasing him didn't seem to require the light to navigate, or maybe it was simply following the noise the boy was making. It tore holes in the metal surrounding it as it followed, growling unpleasantly and always seeming to be just a breath away from Alphonse's heels, ready to bite them off.

As it turned a corner there was a slick sound, like maybe it was wet. Or bloody. If it was its blood or something it had eaten, though, was uncertain.

He was glad he could move his legs, using them as best he could to help move himself forward, but they were weak and he quickly started to feel the burn of overused muscles. That didn't stop him, though. That... that... whatever it was was still right behind him and adrenaline was still pumping so he kept going, gritting his teeth as the start of terrified tears stung his eyes. He was alone, he couldn't walk, he was in the dark, and in a very very tight place. The vent seemed endless, or at least felt that way. He wasn't sure how far he'd gone but he still hadn't come out into another room yet.

Then suddenly he saw the dimness of a light up ahead... Hope surged through and he kept on going. Light. Let it be a... a door or a vent that led outside or to other people or something.Al scrambled forward and fell through the vent to the floor, turning and plastering himself up against the wall to see if that thing was still following him. He didn't see anything... Taking a few moments to get his breathing under control, he listened. He ( ... )

Maybe the thing was content to remain in its vent, or maybe it was waiting. For now the light remained on, and the room safe. But there was yelling coming from the other vent, somewhere out and below--in a voice which might have been familiar to Alphonse, if he listened closely. If it was panicked or in pain, it was hard to tell from this distance.

Al's head shot up when he heard the voice. "Brother...?" he murmured. He moved so his head was right next to the vent and listened ( ... )

They hadn't even done it to spite her, that was the thing of it. She was not so important as all that.

What it was, why she survived, was that they thought she was dead already. They had found her slumped at her desk, very nearly comatose. Perhaps they had not noticed her breathing. Perhaps they did not know what breathing was.

When she came to, it was eerily quiet. The ever-present murmuring, the distant hum of minds at work--she could hear no thoughts except her own. A dull sense of foreboding settled in the pit of stomach, and she almost shivered. She stood up, warily, and opened the door.

Not a few feet from her office was the first body; bloody and mangled and oh dear lord, did she recognize the face. Giselle, and right behind her Chris Miles--he had been in her mentor group. She stopped, for just a moment, as the thing in her stomach threatened to worm its way up her throat. Emma Frost did not cry--she had long since lost the habit--but she was beginning to find it almost impossible to swallow. Beyond Chris lay Miku Hatsune ( ... )

his sight came in flashes now, little blips of surgical instruments and tubes. Blood was pooling in his eye sockets, tinting everything red. He could hear the doctors talking about him like he wasn't even there. "Defective" and "impaired" and "dissect his brain" were the only clear phrases he could make out, but it would have been easy to tell from their tones anyway. He rattled the straps that tied his wrists to gurney frame, but they held fast ( ... )

[resurfaces in an awful hospitally room, which looks suspiciously freshly scrubbed]

Toris? [checks behind him to make sure they're still together] I think we're here.

[Toris collects himself and looks around, his frown deepening as he looks around. Possibly it is his TRAUMA SENSES TINGLING or maybe it's just because ew creepy hospital]

So where is he? Maybe the doors... [approaching one uncertainly to open it]

[there are a few horrible experiments in cages in the room behind Toris's door, but none of them are Iggy. There's another door leading to a hallway though, and that looks promising]

[passes by them with a horrible guilty feeling in his stomach; he wants to help them, but they're not real, and Iggy is his first priority. he vows to come back and set them free if at all possible]

[opens the promising door!]

[Toris is already steeling himself for--well, he's not sure what specifically. Half hoping for someone who did this, even if they're not real he could stab them and that would make him feel a tiny bit better.]

[there are a few scientists coming down the hall towards them, visible through a little window in the door. They're all carrying lunchboxes and laughing about something. One of them has a blood spatter on the front of his white coat.]

[runs up to and GRABS the blood-spattered one, shoving him up against a wall. Warren is not known for his subtlety!]

[HIS GROWLIEST VOICE:] I'm looking for a tall kid, blonde hair, with wings like--[almost says 'mine,' but remembers just in time that he's powerless] an angel. Think you could help me out with that?

[Which leaves Toris to deal with the remaining ones, huh. An alarm would be the least useful thing right now. He'll just stab the one running his way through the throat, THAT SEEMS LIKE A GOOD IDEA. He grabs another one that's running and kicks him in the stomach--these are just scientists, scrappy street kid >>> scientists trufax.]
