GMU

I haven't written about this, but since last April I have been trying to get into school at GMU. I have faced a lot of obstacles and even had to send a second application. Yesterday they had me come in for an interview. I had to have a digital portfolio and 20 pieces of physical art. I got to the school early, even looked at the school map before I left the house so I could find where I was supposed to go. Carried 19 pieces of art (one I thought I would be able to come back for since I was early) Got lost because the first building I went into they told me I was in the wrong building, but I wasn't. Hiked up several flights of stairs all over the place and finally came back to the original building. Despite being slightly late, the beginning of my interview went well. I had to answer two essay questions then read them out loud. They liked the answer to the first question. When I got to the second question, I don't think they liked it. I don't have a specific artist who influences me and when I make something, its because it just popped into my head randomly. They didn't like that at all and kept trying to get me say an artist name. I finally ended up saying Leonardo Da Vinci. I think he is great artist but he doesn't influence me. When we got to the portfolio, it seemed to me that they thought my art was too traditional and not enough conceptual. Their favorite piece was one that I made using wads of toilet paper layered with gesso. They wanted to know the name of it and meaning. I made up a name on the spot. I called it abstract number 87 even though I had never done 87 abstracts.
They only looked at 4 items from the physical portfolio I carried, which upsetted me because it was such a pain in the ass to carry everywhere. The digital portfolio, they seemed to imply that a lot of it was high school. Though they never came out and said it, they would ask if it was high school. Anyways long story short. I sat there for an hour and realized that when they asked for a broad range portfolio, they wanted to see a wide range of concepts and ideas.. I thought they would of wanted a wide range of mediums, so I gave them that instead. Either way I don't think it went well and its making me second guess whether or not I should be an art teacher to begin with because I don't think I can make the difference I want to make as an art teacher. but I cant work as a humanitarian aid either because I can't take Toki to Ghana or Bangladesh..... sooo I'm at a lost for what my next step should be if I don't get accepted.
