"It's your fault, you know," Kaylee said thoughtfully. "Not that I mind." She ran a finger over Simon's jaw. Smiled at him.
Simon shrugged and offered a sheepish grin. "Yes, well, I guess it comes naturally to me." He paused. "I...I'm sorry though for chasing her away. I know you liked her."
"She was nice, sure," Kaylee agreed, "but the friendship wouldn't have lasted."
"Oh?"
"She told me before she knew about us that she had a thing for you. She thought you're cute."
Simon stared at her blankly. "Me? She thought - "
Grinning, Kaylee nodded. "Yup! Until she heard you 'talk'. Or rather, stammer. She didn't much like that. Shot you down for it, she did. That's when I knew for sure it'd never last."
Simon placed his middle finger on his lip, pondering this new development. His gaze came to rest on Kaylee. "You broke off your friendship because she didn't like me 'stammering'?" His eyes glinted.
"I did."
"Well. I don't know whether to be offended or not by that. I guess, thank you, for standing up for me."
"Oh, no! I didn't stand up for you. Your stammer is...well, was all kinds of frustrating before we, well, you know. Kept a wall 'tween us. I like it better now. You're much more relaxed."
"You really think so?"
"I do think so, yeah," Kaylee confirmed.
They shared a smile.
"Well," Simon said. "In that case, I'll happily take the blame."
