They walked, glove in glove, smiles on their faces and snowflakes in their hair. It was a beautiful morning. There was the faintest sparkle of light peeking out over the horizon, making the snow and the frozen lake glimmer with radiance.

Other than the occasional flap of a wing or fragment of birdsong, it was quiet. "So, do you think there's a chance we'll catch a peek at ol' Frosty?" Mulder asked, his voice teasing.

Scully turned to him, a put off expression on her face. When she saw his grin, she frowned more, released her grip on his hand and prodded him in the chest. "Not funny, Mulder."

"No, of course not. What would be funny about Frosty? He’s a very… cold person.”

Scully let out a short laugh and poked him again. “You’re terrible, you know that?”

Without warning, Mulder took off, running as quickly as he could. The speed he was going at was impressive considering that with every step, his feet sank nearly to his ankles in snow. He loped along like some kind of wild animal with a much larger predator behind it.

Scully laughed some more. “Mulder!” she called.

He kept running.

Rolling her eyes, she kneeled down in the snow. Scooping some up in her hands, she compacted it until it formed a ball. Then, she called out to her partner again. “Mulder! Where are you going?” She kept the snowball hidden away.

Mulder must have noticed she wasn’t chasing him because he slowed to a stop and turned to face her. “I’m looking for Frosty,” he said with a smirk. “You coming? Or are you scared?”

She bit her lower lip to stop herself from laughing more. “I’m quite all right here,” she said a moment later.

“All right then. I’ll see you once I’ve found Frosty.” Mulder made the mistake of turning his back on her to run further away. The moment his line of sight was not directed at her, she tossed the snowball.

Powdery white crumpled on Mulder’s sweater and he fell face forward in the snow. By the time he pulled himself to his feet, Scully made it over to him. “I don’t think Frosty is out today,” she told him. “But you’re currently standing on a snow angel.”

Mulder glanced down, surprised. On seeing the muffled shape in the snow, he grinned. “See, Scully?” he said. “Isn’t this fun? This kind of weather brings to life things few ever imagine.”

“Right you are, Mulder,” she said, putting an arm around his shoulder. “Right you are.”

Just as her certainty that Mulder would retaliate faded out, she felt him shifting around at the back of her shirt. Then, icy cold ran down her back. A squeal escaped her lips.

“Payback,” Mulder said, and then he ran off again. Scully didn’t hesitate this time. She chased him and readied herself for a fight. Only one of them would still be standing by the time midday arrived.
