Can we talk about what's up with Mulder's doll? I mean, really? Huh? And where was that doll when Mulder was dead for three months? Not that I actually find it out of character for Apollo 11 Key Chain Guy, but it's still a WTF moment.
I do like the M/S scenes though. Even with the infernal teasing about Scully's baby daddy...
Oh, and the scenes under the oak trees with Mulder, Reyes, and Doggett are beautiful. Reyes gets some really wonderful scenery for many of her scenes.
I really enjoyed Reyes in season eight this time through. I disliked the whole angle with Doggett's son. It just plays so false to me. I don't feel for him, but I know the writers expect me to do so and I resent that.
Not gonna lie -- the only parts of this episode I really bothered to pay attention to were the Mulder/Scully scenes. I couldn't even watch the scenes of Mulder with Reyes and Doggett (he did have scenes with Doggett, right?) -- my response was essentially "Zzzzzz." Doggett and Reyes frustrate me because I think they're inherently interesting characters, but the writing never really seemed to work. (Not to mention the fact I feel like they were talked up by Scully for no discernable reason other than CC et al wanted us to like them, eg. Scully's comment that Doggett is above reproach in Three Words and her telling Mulder she liked Reyes, which I didn't really think she did when they met in TINH.) Anyway, I'm going off-topic
( ... )
You're totally right about the Doggett and Reyes characters being good in theory, but just never being executed properly. No lines really bother me more (well, not off the top of my head) than Scully's lines about Doggett and Reyes that... really make no sense, in context, but are supposed to somehow convince the audience, "Oh, if Scully likes them, we must too!" Sigh.
I don't like the first and last M&S scenes either. I'm not sure why. They're...out of character? awkward? just plain boring? I don't know. The the one in the hospital makes me melt, though. And I'm an especially big fan of this one. It's just so protective and possessive and so Mulder
( ... )
I'm with you on Reyes, actually! I've softened on her, overall, with time -- as one tends to do when bitterness and annoyance wear off -- but I do definitely like her best when she's squaring off with Mulder. I think that's why I like this scene as much as I do.
I'm very intrigued by your musings at the end there! Granted, my ideal S9 would have been Scully and William going off WITH Mulder (which totally could have been done, were FOX not totally manipulative bastards), but your ideas are pretty interesting too.
I kind of like this episode and I kind of don’t. Haha, same!
I also get kind of disturbed when Doggett goes to Scully’s hospital room and just … stares. It would bother me much less if he didn't do this FREQUENTLY. Like, almost once an episode. It seriously freaks me out by the time S9 rolls around

THIS. Doggett's lurking is super-creepy. I wonder if the writers had him lurk outside at least someone's hospital room as often as they could because they thought it was funny. Or, well, knowing the show at this point in time, if they were doing it on purpose they probably thought it was cool. (And gosh, he still does it in S9? Jeez.)
THAT CAP. I may or may not have it saved in my folder of XF screencaps. HIS FACE, indeed. I am partial to this cap, too.
Yeah, they probably thought it was cool, or somehow uber-sympathetic. I think one of the most striking things that plagued the latter seasons was that... the writers suddenly seemed to have NO clue what the audience wanted anymore. I'm not saying writers should always cowtow to the desires of the audience, but there's that, and then there's staying at all in touch with the natural progression of a series.
That cap is wonderful, too! I love it when the dad in DD comes out, it always plays so naturally. What an expression!
To echo leucocrystal on the whole DD and GA taking the decision of how to play the characters into their own hands I have to quote one of my fave parts of the TWoP recaps here (from the Empedocles one):
I'm going to take a sidebar for a little recap within this recap. I got a videotape in the mail last week, from an anonymous source at FOX. The contents of that tape pertain to the scene we just saw. It's security tape from inside Gillian Anderson's trailer, and it's top secret, so keep this under your hat. A big thank-you to my source, whoever you are. The tape opens up with Gillian sitting on her sofa in a kimono, her hair in giant Velcro curlers, reading a dog-eared book called Take Them to the Cleaners: A Guide to Successful Contract Negotiations. There's a knock at the door. She lets in David Duchovny, who must have just gotten out of makeup, because he still has a Kleenex stuck between his collar and his chin. He's holding a copy of the script.
Gillian Anderson: David, what happened? You look awful. David Duchovny: What the hell is going
