I don't like the first and last M&S scenes either. I'm not sure why. They're...out of character? awkward? just plain boring? I don't know. The the one in the hospital makes me melt, though. And I'm an especially big fan of this one. It's just so protective and possessive and so Mulder.
The general idea of this one is really interesting--that evil is passed from person to person--but the execution fails in some way that I can't quite define. I think it's probably because I'm indifferent to Jeb Dukes.
I realized this time around that I like Reyes when she's working with Mulder, and that's about the only time I like her. It's interesting to see Mulder get to have a conversation with another believer without it being about her trying to get into his pants and without her already knowing all the answers and just leaving breadcrumbs for Mulder to follow.
This makes me wonder about what would've happened if Mulder hadn't left after William was born and Scully went back to the x-files. Would you've had two 'skeptics' officially assigned to the x-files and two 'believers' on the periphery offering alternatives and therefore creating a pretty awesome team of four, or would it have just been a mess where Mulder and Scully acted as partners and left Doggett out of the loop? Don't get me wrong, the M&S partnership is sacred to me and I'd rather see that than anything else, but I just think it's interesting to see our heroes in other circumstances too. Sorta like how I wonder a lot how different that partnership would be if Melissa and most importantly, Scully's father hadn't died.
I'm with you on Reyes, actually! I've softened on her, overall, with time -- as one tends to do when bitterness and annoyance wear off -- but I do definitely like her best when she's squaring off with Mulder. I think that's why I like this scene as much as I do.
I'm very intrigued by your musings at the end there! Granted, my ideal S9 would have been Scully and William going off WITH Mulder (which totally could have been done, were FOX not totally manipulative bastards), but your ideas are pretty interesting too.
