Such a beautiful but sad episode, can't help it but tear up at the end of it. Unforgettable parts that come to mind; - Mulder saying he reduced the guy's vision *lol* - Scully saying "Let's go waste some money" (The smug smile on her face =)) - Scully holding Teresa's baby, and the way mulder looks at Scully. - Mulder & Scully in the woods *poor Scully* - Mulder comforting Scully & holding her in bed *Gloom* - The scene in the hallway when Scully & Mulder hold each other again - Sad but nonetheless unforgettable; Mulder being taken away. =( - Scully telling Skinner she's pregnant. I'm sure I left tons out but these came to mind right now. Watched the episode last night, now I'll continue watching so Mulder will be back soon.
Oh, this one always makes me cry like a baby. It's a wonderfully constructed episode, but it still depresses the hell out of me. How can I feel any other way, knowing that this is the last time I truly get to see my favorite character, and knowing what they're going to do to him from now on? Sigh.
Discussion question that I've gotten into a lot lately elsewhere: what are everyone's thoughts on what kind of a true series finale this would have made? It's known that it was originally intended to be the end of the show, but when FOX laid the ultimatum down, Chris tacked on the pregnancy ending as a cliffhanger. (Yes, the fainting throughout hints at it, because they'd been meaning to explore Scully's fertility issues from as early on as S5, but having it as the cliffhanger scene was a last-minute decision. The scene was shot with virtually no one knowing what they were about to see.) What I don't know for sure is if it would have still ended with the abduction, were this the series finale; there must have been, as there always are,

I briefly mentioned my thoughts already in the post, but hey! No one else is commenting.
That depends on what they decided to go with. I'm assuming Mulder being abducted was always in the cards, but you bring up a good point about various different scripts. I could NOT accept a finale with Mulder abducted, and you're right, who the hell knows if we would have gotten a movie to tie up that big loose end? In any version, and especially the one that turned out, I could not deal with it as a series ending. Personally.
Others shout about the awfulness of the seasons to come, and yes, it would be nice to erase some of those things. But it wouldn't be enough to me to say goodbye to the series at this particular point.
(My personal pick is Season 8's finale as a series ending.)

Re: your original post: I welcomed the whole baby thing if it could have been done properly. Oh, how I feel your pains (as I think most of our fellow Philes must). The storyline with probably the most potential, squandered in quite possibly the worst way. I'm quite sure it didn't help that the writing staff was a bunch of apparently clueless males who didn't appear to own a desk calendar. ANYWAY.
I've always assumed that was the case too, regardless of how it ended up playing out in the final script, so I've always sort of mentally rejected Requiem as a series finale, regardless of whatever version they could've gone with besides this one. And honestly, even if all the ideal scenarios fell together; even if we DID get a movie, and DID get it as immediately as possible... the series itself would still have an incredibly depressing, hopeless ending. And I really don't think I could've gone for that. I imagine there would have been quite an uproar amongst fans, and who knows; after an ending like that, the movie may even have tanked!

Agreed. I'm not sure if I could take that. Actually, I know for sure that I couldn't. And to be quite honest, I didn't really get into the internet fandom until Season 8 with the show, SO MANY THINGS WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT.
But all in all, Season 8 had so much opportunity for greatness. It just didn't turn out to be all that great.
And do not even speak to me about the brain disease. DO NOT.
Yes on the entire preceding paragraph. Yesyesyes. And I also ignore the brain disease because it's a sucker punch to an already broken...arm or something. Lawd, I hope I don't get that episode.
Thus we have arrived at my final (and possibly longest) Back Story post. I haven't been able to track down XF episode guides for Season 8 and 9 (I don't think any exist), so my back stories end here. I hope you've all enjoyed them as much as I've enjoyed typing 'em up!
Hi Billy Miles! Detective Miles! Teresa Hoese! CSM! Marita! Krycek! TLG! Skinner! Bounty Hunter! It's like one big party and all our XF friends and villains are invited! And may I point out that Marita and Krycek are SO DAMN HOT in this one. OMG.
I love how this ep starts out with the FBI sicking an accountant on M&S. As if that would faze them LOL.
The whole gang eating Chinese food in Skinner's office = AWESOME.
Mulder's knee-jerk reaction to seeing Krycek again is to try to kill him. He doesn't even hesitate. And I love it. And then Scully walks in and she's like, "WTF is going on?"
Scully: "I've seen evidence of the paranormal, that hasn't exactly made me a complete disbeliever." (This may have been a deleted scene, can't remember.)
"But Paul Rabwin remembers that things began to change as Season 7 got under way. 'As the season progressed, we found ourselves starting to get energized again. Word started getting around that maybe this would not be the end. The network certainly wanted us back and Gillian was still under contract for another year. As we got toward the end of the season, everyone was kind of hopeful

"Some clues came to light in the casting process. Since 'Requiem' returned to the scene of the very first X-Files episode, casting director Rick Millikan brought back the slightly older Leon Russom (Detective Miles), Zachary Ansley (Billy Miles), and Sarah Koskoff (Teresa Hoese). Also returning to the fold were Laurie Holden as Marita Covarrubias and Nicholas Lea as mercenary Alex Krycek

"The X-Files production wrapped up shooting at the studio at the end of Day 4 and relocated to the mountain resort of Big Bear, California. The picturesque mountains, glassy lakes, and long stark stretches of forest made Big Bear the ideal backdrop for the final days of the 'Requiem' shoot. The Big Bear stay coincided with a number of the episode's most demanding visual effects and stunts. Stunt coordinator Danny Weselis recalls a particularly nasty car wreck on a lonely stretch of mountain road and the day that Gillian Anderson was hoisted into the air on a harness to simulate her encounter with the alien force field. But Bill Millar created much of the visual FX sequences involving the alien craft and its encounters with humans in a building in Big Bear

With nearly very episode this season calling out the theme "everything happens for a reason," coming back to square one, the (supposed) culmination of the mytharc was overwhelming in the idea that every year led up to this moment, that everything led both of them to coming back to this place. In the nine minutes they lost seven years before, were they destined to be thrust into so much leading up to this point?
Though I wasn't happy with the ending, I think it gave Mulder the freedom to live "the truth" and Scully the freedom to move on and have a life. But oh thank god that wasn't the end!
